Get the box painted at the same time that you get the car.

Thanks for the link. ^^

Thanks for all the comments and messages lads. That was a hectic flippin' weekend. I stuffed up my adjustment back into dayshift mode for the weekend. Those if you who've worked night will know you have to get that first day off right so you sleep that night. ***** it up and it's the weekend written off.
That was like a full time job replying to people and answering questions.
Sorry anyone has messaged and I haven't replied. Totally hectic.

So my mate Mark is 99% buying the car. He sorted funds yesterday. I gave him one more night to sleep on it to be sure he wants it.
Once I get the money today I'm going to ring and hopefully secure one of these two.

Opinions welcome on them. Pros and cons to both.

If I go for one and it can be ready for Friday morning we'll go down Thursday night and stop near the dealers. Fri am I'll buy it then head to Oulton for start of a great weekend.

So Boxster.
For
I love the rear view and the sound with pse.
Newer, lower miles, way cleaner and more original. Roof off fun for Alps tour,
Great spec and rare colour. I love guards red.
Shouldn't need much other than servicing for a few years.
Have driven them but not owned one so it's a new experience.

Against.
Low miles but high compared to some Spyders and the market seems daft like the Ferrari market when it comes to what is deemed as high miles.
So will I be forever clock watching the milometer.

Only 320bhp so no quicker than 996 and not a particularly special engine.
Reliable but there are a few gen2 failures starting to happen now.
Windnoise over 60 is comical.
Front view is just a Boxster. - No ***** Sherlock.

GT3

For
Stiff, raw, I love the looks in general, £25k spent a few years ago on all the things they need.
Ohlins, diff rebuild, Alcons, etc.
Maybe the last chance to get back into one and it is keenly priced.

Against
It's been tracked a fair old bit.
Gravel rash galore
It has been in a 'collection" for the last 4 years so has a 4 year gap in the service history file.
It's only done 10 miles in that time so if I start using it will all the dry oil seals start peeing out oil.
Over budget really. I had an absolute max of £50k when I set out looking at stuff.
Keenly priced but it still hasn't sold so if a dealer can't get that for it I'll be lucky to get high 40's if I have to offload it.
So it's thing and ready but straight. Will definitely cost more to get tip top.
As Graham says I've owned one so will it be that good the second time around.
Reliable but it's a £35k engine if it does go bang.

For my road trip the Spyder would be fun but not on the motorway stints due to wind noise.
What's luggage space like?

The GT3 will be harsh I imagine so may not be great either and the rear is filled with rollcage so crap for luggage.

But I'm not choosing the car around one 3 week trip I suppose.

Anyway I'll see what happens today.

Opinions welcomed although I know it's up to me. :puh:

As you have moved on from 'don't do it" to 'done it" that's a big relief I am sure, opinions on the actual logic etc are now defunct as you have decided what you want to do.

So with that in mind, my 0.2 cents worth.
In terms of the GT3 having been fortunate to have owned one previously you know what you are getting, the target car does look a very nice example, some could argue a little leggy for a gt3 but only from the collector and future collector status but as a car in isolation not exactly galactic mileage! Some very nice additions too, paint work having seen the wrong side of too many stones is wearing its scars with pride, but having just been through putting paint right you know exactly what is required. But in some ways I see it as a positive, due to the fact it's not going to stop you actually getting out and driving the car as it's meant to be, another chip here or there will probably go largely unnoticed! Also a decent detail and chipex specialist will reduce these massively. Long term the value of these cars is pretty much secure and has the potential for the larger increase in value.

The spyder, please don't shoot me! The 87 variety is not quite so special as the 81 variety with the engine being only mildly tweaked, versus a larger capacity in the later car. That said it is a stunning looking car and the red sits very well, see photo of our 81. The spec with carbon buckets is a massive tick in the box!
A friend of my wife has the 87 spyder and by her admission the roof up/down performance is a faff! And not the work of a moment! Space wise frunk as spacious as 96 frunk but without the spare wheel. Rear boot space is a lot more shallow but still a good size, does get very warm in that boot, so grocery's go in the front!
Another thing that does seem to be a potential problem is the mileage with the spyder, low mileage is king with these for future value and increasing the odometer = £'s depreciation even worse on the 81 flavour, another issue is the spyder paint work being obviously newer and not stone chipped you will need to preserve that, and the only way will be PPF which we have had done on our 81 S, 9 months on it is still spotless so almost a must if you don't want the pain of repaint in the future! So factor another 1800-2000 for that. If not you could be in danger of it being too precious to use properly?
Anyway just my thoughts having had a 87 S for 10 yrs and 81 S for nearly a year they are great drivers cars and supremely capable, I just lucky the wife likes her Boxster and I get to have the odd go in it if she feeling generous 😂
If not I still have my 2 to play with.
Good luck with your choice and which ever way you jump I look forward to reading about it in your posts which are always informative and a great read.
👍🏁

I think you should get the GT3. Even better its a patina'd, "broken in" GT3 so you won't be afraid to use it properly.

I think everybody needs a usable 911. The spyder would make a good 2nd Porsche.

Just don't get it painted.

It'd be a gt3 for me. If you've missed the first 1 so much then you know what they're about. Ive never had the pleasure but it'd be a first class toy.

As go the patina'd look, that's exactly where I am with my c2. It's nice and tidy but not so mint that I won't use it. All my toys have been off the road for winter but not this 1. Actually using it for work atm.
You can always paint it when needs be.

You are going to have to spend a bit though as it's been lying up.

You pays your money and takes your choice

It'll be fun either way

GT3 without question out of those two although my only reservation is that by modifying your car you have closed the boundaries between the two.
Will it still blow your socks off?

I assume the GT3 will come with a decent warranty?
Just make sure that you use it loads, short & long drives, use it whenever you can for the first 3 months, traffic and Long drives, to highlight any problems so the garage can rectify them.

You've created an pristine car (and now sold it to a lucky buyer - madness!), please don't do the same to your next car, use it for good times and bank those memories.

GT3 for me, unlikely to lose much value and should you sell it in a few years then that Boxter will be much cheaper if you still want one.

Morning Mark. Do TSR own the GT3 or is it on SOR ?
I note from your opening post on your car, that you purchased a lightly damaged aerokit front bumper, did you sell it once you'd bought the complete aerokit ?

  Cant say it any better than that.

^^

Blimey Wasz, I agree with you and G though I think.

Thanks for the views lads, especially the Spyder insight from Griffter and ABCarrera.

You're right it's a very mileage driven model regarding resale etc so not ideal. Although I'm a summer use type owner anyway I suppose.

Neil I would use one of those boxes but rarely and I wouldn't spend money on one.
I know Jon Olsson always fits them and they're quite cool but not for me.

Gaz, thanks for that but two reasons I can't consider it.
Main one is price. Budget creep going on there.
Second is it's black and I swear no more black cars for a long time. Stunning when clean but that lasts all of 5 miles.

Looks nice though, great mileage and KWs etc.
Too rich for me though.

Cheers Ned and yep I may have to spend a bit when I start using it obviously.

Ady, that's the million dollar question.
Do I well and truly have my rose-tinters on and I'm gonna get the GT3 and think they aren't all that.
My mk1 CS was special due to it being 1 of 28 uk cars. The Mk2 is positively everywhere by comparison.

As I've said this is the issue buying a well used one and from a dealer. If I wanted to move it on, could I and if I could would I lose my shirt? Definitely yes on the last one I think.

BHZ yep I'm still erring that way at the moment.

Munky there is 3 months in-house warranty with rather a lot of exclusions when I read it,
Namely for me oil seals and oil leaks which I am most worried about.

I have no worries around the engine internals or anything.

So just rang Supercar Rooms about the GT3.
They won't budge on price so I'm leaving it.

The car sold for just under £50k in 2014.
It has since sat and had no servicing since then.
I said I'd rather get my guy to service it so that would knock a bit off etc and I'd go to £52k.
That's not enough so fair enough.

It has always been a hard sell that car. Silver Mk2 comfort. The ex owner before 2014 paid £31k for it in about 2012.

So that's it for now. No rush. I need a car for August for my road trip but I can buy anything for that and sell it when I get back if it isn't a keeper.

I'm having a look at none Porsche stuff too now so we'll see.

Cheers. :thumb:

100% the correct decision.I honestly think that unless you can steal a GT3 then you would end up wedged with it if you decided it wasn't for you.
911v tried to sell my brothers mk1 GT3 for a year and its now sat on the naughty step in his garage.
Interesting times Mark.Just sit and wait as you say as interesting times are around the corner.

Yes probably, although Brexit will probably not happen for another 2 or 3 years if at all, but yep GT3s are hardly flying out the door.

I still have the C2 for another week or two until my mate clears out his garage, just to add salt to my wounds.

I do love that red Spyder but it's higher miles than every other one for sale and I think I'd view it as a newish sporty but soulless car. That rear view though. :cloud9:
