993 Wiper Blades

I've always been a RainX fan, so fancied giving those wipers a try. But in truth Bosch are fine.

Was the best option established? PIAA site doesn't list any for the 993... :?

...preferably ones that follow the curvature of the screen, rather than 'hang off' the final 3-5cm.

All I know is...one of the first things I did was to go into Halfrauds because my wipers were totally worn out. Got replacements, Bosch (which I thought was a good thing). Chrstian (Colt) noticed however that they are both thicker than the originals and don't curve so I lost illuminati points before I'd even had the car a day. :wack:

Did he indicate which ones are correct/'thinner'/have the required curvature? :?:

Hi Chet,

I got such a comprehensive reply back from Christian earlier this evening that I thought I would take the liberty of copying and pasting it direct without adding much more (other than noting that Christian is definitely worth checking out now that he's got his own specialist workshop, and that whilst I have no affiliation, I've been mightily impressed by his fastidious approach). For anyone interested, he's based in Wiltshire and I'll happily pass on his number via PM if anyone wants.

Anyway...in his own words:

I think Porsche is one of the few designs left which require a soft flexible wiper blade frame with unusual length and pivot points to fit the windscreen design. I think Bosch couldnt justify carrying on production of these old fashioned blades just for Porsche or Porsche wouldn't commit to a big enough production run. Now they have kept the original design on the short lower blade only, as it must mount the rubber buffer 'gumi puffer" in German on parts description label on packaging! In the lozenge shaped hole on the frame and to keep that feature it was easier/cheaper to remain with the original pattern.
The longer (upper) blade is now a modern universal type Bosch and neither looks right or fits the screen properly. I saw this happen with both the genuine Porsche blade sets and the Bosch specific fit set about six years ago, I started saving every original top blade I removed with a view to reconditioning and rerubbering them with genuine Bosch rubbers. I also found that the previous original equipment wiper blade supplier for previous 911 models (SWF) made the best equivalent specific fit set for the 993 and even included a rubber buffer in with the blades! I searched Europe for whatever stock was left and bought them all, but i caught the boat a bit late and they were very scarce! They are now obsolete from SWF.
One man in the country has a few sets.
Regards,Christian

Thanks very much pierrebear, comprehensive indeed .

..and yes, you're not the first to wax lyrical about Christian's abilities - he appears to have an outstanding reputation within the 993 community :thumb: will have to visit him!

I have used SWF last 2 times bought from Germany. Above is a UK seller.
To be honest I can't remember if they fit correctly, out for a 2hour plus drive tomorrow on the M4, lucky me, so will check them.

Many thanks Fulla! :thumb:

Did you manage to check whether yours fit well?
I've bought a set from the link above, so hope the answer is yes...

EDIT Dec 2019:
The link above now seems to point to BOSCH wipers - that is incorrect.
The correct ones are SWF wipers, part number: 99362803800

I fitted new wiper blades just the other week as the ones I fitted back in 2010, Bosch 15" and 18" were a bit noisy when using to clean the screen. (we don't get a lot of rain here and even less when I was in Kuwait 8) ) This is the second set of wipers I've fitted since I bought the car back in 2000. I didn't realise they were specially shaped. I thought I'd kept the originals and was going to swap the rubbers over having read this thread but having had a search I can't seem to find them :dont know: However, I fitted a new set of Bosch 15" and 18" and they do sit a little off at the end of the screen but wipe perfectly. The rubber widget fits in the 15" blade just fine. Having gone to the Ebay link I must say the SWF blades frame look very similar to the Bosch one.

ATB :)

Oh dear...I didn't think anyone would actually take my advice:)
For me they do fit well and do the job. I'll go see if I can grab a picture and post it for you. I actually brought 2 sets which should last me awhile. Previously I used the PIAA's which worked well but as Tobes mentioned RainX is also an option which works amazingly well.

Hopefully the picture shows the fit to the screen.

Thank you for posting, Fulla.

Seems like most current options, then, result in the final few cm failing to keep contact with the glass... :what:.

Hi Fulla ,

That picture is perfect :thumb: it looks like your wipers sit the same as mine. Only difference I can see is that yours park on the right and mine on the left.

ATB :)
