wondering if any one can tell me if its ok to support the car as per photo while I remove the front wheels.

Yes. You're sitting on the strongest part of the subframe there that the car sits on.
 
Always have something else sat ubder somewhere else for safety though.

Looks like it's a bit late to be asking!
 
Trolley jack is supporting it too.
 
Thanks guys, I thought it was ok just wanted some confirmation, its a while since I've been spannering at this level, yes it is also on jacks.
Finally got springs out for replacement, front strut was pretty corroded into the wheel carrier, ended up taking the whole lot off.
