Hi guys

First post as a Porsche owner, got a few questions if anyone could help it would be appreciated.

Ok, so the car I bought (significantly cheaper than market value for A1 running cars) knowing it had a misfire issue at higher speeds; it was a bit of a rush purchase. I have done a fair bit of work on past cars including refurbs, engine builds and a kit car build or two but I was hoping not to have to get my hands too dirty on this as I dont have time nowadays .

I did get it for a very good price but the mileage is 90k, but hey, I was only looking at getting a 997 3.8 so I took the gamble. Hopefully it wont be one I live to regret !!
The seller bought it as a fully running car but then discovered on the drive home he had been stiffed and once the car was at motorway speed (and temps) it started misfiring under throttle. He didn't want the hassle of trying to get it fixed as he works out of the country so I decided to take a chance on it (2 weeks after he bought it he put it up for sale as spares or repair).

I am getting it recovered to a friends garage (they run a few 911s themselves) so all will become clearer later this week but just wanted to say hi and I will be back.... for some 911 knowledge from anyone able and willing to help :worship:

I am hoping it's coil packs. Reciepts (got plenty of them with it) show they were replaced 3 years ago, oil pressure is sweet, idle is rough, gentle throttle application it runs better, but it is not a happy 911 at the moment. No warning lights showing on the dash. Will post back with fault codes and findings.

Thanks for any help :)

Could well be a coil pack issue or maybe a fuel flow issue if it's only at high speed, pump issue or fuel filter maybe!

Hopefully it's a nice easy fix and you have a bargain :thumb:

Thanks mate :D

It was me yes
The guy had very few options when he could get back up the country to his parents house to show the car so I ended up doing one evening visit, looking it over thoroughly, but it wouldnt start (flat battery) so I essentially offered a price as a non runner.. To be fair I expected it to be some scam but as everything started to check out it was too good of an opportunity to miss.

He was not the sort of young chap who wanted to be dealing with the average ebay ruffians and so I managed to acquire it quickly..!

Then I went back today and managed to get the front trunk open and boosted the battery and she ran far better than I expected.!

It is a really tidy car; will have to see what sort of a struggle it puts up though to fix it!!

Desperately keen to be able to go out and give it a good run!!!

:D

Ducati Rob

Thanks mate. Yes, quite hopeful that its something relatively simple. Removing the engines looks like a PITA without a 4 poster so really keen for it not to be too involved

It does it from idle so I was thinking most likely ignition? (hoping!)

Does anyone know how I can get a spec list from Porsche that the car came with? Are they likely to assist for an older car?

Thanks again!

:welcome: to 911uk and to the turbo club.

NB: We're not 911usa or Audiuk so please refer to your car as a 997.1T and not as a tt.

Good Luck with the fix. :thumb:

Congratulations on your new car  Are those brake calipers painted?

:welcome:

If you're lucky it's sometjing simple like coil packs or some other part of the hardware (sensors, wiring etc). You might also consider checking to see what if someone has put a poor quality map on it as well. And so on. Once you get a good quality diagnosis you'll know what you're dealing with.

Good luck with your new purchase. They're amazing things!

To help you with further questions going forward with your recent acquisition have a dig around the FAQ's in the 997 section.

Welcome to 911uk.

many thanks, will do :)

Indeed, all will be revealed later this week

Went into the purchase with my eyes open though so we shall see what what fault code(s) it has to start and go from there. Will update here when I know more!

yes, they are..!! Unfortunately

One thing I meant to ask; Are there any well respected Porsche Indys or experts around the Sheffield region?

Would be great to get a few recommendations in case I need it. thanks

Thanks pzero. I have heard of Steve before, very useful to have a few local specialists to turn to if required.
Cheers

Well the news is good. Had the car pored over by some 911 fanatics at the garage and myself and it is indeed in excellent shape bodywork wise, a few issues identified and a few fault codes found but the engine runs sweetly barring the slightly rougher (than it should be) idle.

Exhaust is blowing from the gasket join at the rear so this is getting fixed first. The thinking being possibly the incorrect back pressure is causing the computer to add extra fuel or do funky stuff so this needs addressing before further works.

The battery - was in poor shape. This was immediately replaced with a larger Bosch unit but the steering sensor wasnt recalibrated before we pulled the codes (snapon code reader) so it shows the steering angle sensor needs recalibrating.

Also, the electronic ignition barrel needs replacing as you can take the key out when the car is running; also on one occasion it needed key out>in as the Nav unit etc didnt come on and a 'wake up line' fault was listed in fault memory. I have found the part on design911; my question is 'does the unit need coding to my key or is that done elsewhere?' A quick quide I read makes it sound like a 10 minute replacement?? with no recoding

P1647 - auxilliary water pump driver . After doing a bit of digging this seems to be the coolant pump for the turbo used when the car is switched off. It seems some people have run without one for years with no issues. But I will replace it and hopefully that will sort that.

8004 terminal 50 fault code - This could have been stored from when the ignition key didnt initialise properly as I didnt get time to clear it and try again.

8007 wake up line faulty - again, due to the ignition not fully initialising things (eg stereo) I think but I didnt clear it and recheck yet.

We test drove the car and it drove fine apart from blowing exhaust was evident.

One other question, does anyone know where I can obtain the workshop tech manuals for the car? I keep thinking I have found the PDFs online but most sites look questionable so I have not obtained anything of use yet!!!

Many thanks for any input
