Quandry, 996 or 997?

...agree with you Alex except the headlights...I genuinely appreciate the fact that they are uniquely styled and stupidly believe this feature might actually be acknowledged as iconic in the future...a la 914 ...

I would find out what that engine rebuild was on the 997. There are engine rebuilds and then there are engine rebuilds!

:agree:

.......and another thing - forget about anything to do with the IMS bearing. When adverts state "IMS sorted" they're full of No.2s......unless they've had a rebuild and much bigger bearing fitted.

As you say OP, its a 911 so you can't go far wrong.

People whinge about the interior of the 996 being 'dated' yet fawn over the god awful 964/993 interiors.

The 997 in general isn't ageing with any particular grace, whereas the 9*6 cars are actually starting to look a bit special now.

Old Pinky was ahead of his time.

The 997 is nice, don't get me wrong.... But the 996 certainly isn't any less nice.

For years (as a child) a drooled over the 911 but always thought the interior inferior, especially compared with any other super/sports car from the same era. As I grew older it always reminded me of my Escort MKII. Then the 993 came along and I thought wow, they've bought one of those Halfords centre consoles and stuck it in.........what an improvement :floor:

The 996 came along and I thought they've actually got it right at last. Proper sports car look and feel to it (It was actually designed for the interior for the 993 but the plug was pulled last minute due to manufacturing costs of the rest of the car).

Then the 997 came along and we're back to something that resembles a high production Ford reps car. :nooo:

Deffo mate!

As if Les was having a right good chat with him last year about the design.

I'll say it again the rump of a 997 just looks dumpy and wrong particularly the C4S, it's looks like they injected too much silicone in and it's shifted around, nice face though admittedly

996 C4S has the best arse in the motoring world, sue me if I'm wrong :D

For me the 997 is far better looking, and has a much nice interior

So buy a 997!

And make sure you always approach it from the front!

Having had both, the 997S (especially with Chrono) is leagues ahead IMO, the interior/dash far nicer and I prefer the exterior looks too. I can't really see why anyone would prefer the dash in the 996 but I suppose it's a case of each to their own, but for me the jump from 996-997 was a huge upgrade in just about every aspect of the car. I certainly wouldn't want to change back to a 996.

Regardless of 996 or 997, as others have said at the end of the day they're both 911's, dream cars, but don't buy at the bottom of the market without the backup funds to lash out some serious money if they go wrong.

Because the dash in a 996 looks like it should be sat in a sports car, unlike the 997's.
