What price did the 993 bottom out at?

Everything else was fine, although Ed had replaced far more than what was in the show. I had access to Ed's purchases off eBay alone when he did the car up. I still have the list:

The most amazing price one I remember seeing advertised was the Vesuvius C2S at £16,950.

205,000 miles but well cared for. Seller had a queue of buyers. Buyer relisted it three weeks later for £27k.

Jonttt's post from 2012:

Started reading the PH thread quoted above, with some interesting points about the 993 versus 996 which remain topical. One of the arguments being the 993 is the more economical car to run. Whoever wrote that had clearly not had bills like mine  . Also the guy who was going on about how bad 993s are to drive until someone asked him how long he had owned one. Turns out he had driven one belonging to a friend once. Allegedly. Got to love some threads. Stopped reading it when I saw the cmoose posts one after the other and remembered why I've stopped using PH.

When I was looking for my 1st 911 in 2008, a '996 was more expensive than a comparable '993

I paid £24k for the '996.2 with 45k miles - and ran it for 3 years.
In the same year, a buddy of mine bought a '993 (C4) with 145k miles for £14k
He still has it now.....

I then went on to buy a '993 in 2012 (C2 with 82k miles) for £20k and that was about the average price at that time.

I suppose we are the lucky ones as we have been able to spend a fortune on them and still have value in the car :?:

It would be good to see what the average price has been year on year - but here's a snip from a 2004 classic car magazine - oh for a crystal ball...

I paid £30k for my 993 C2 in 2001, a 964 RS was about the same price at the time.

Timing

Timing is everything with investments......and cars! I bought a 2 year old 987 boxster in 2008. Dealers were asking 32/33k for similar cars. I paid £20500 for a private sale car. The lady had tried to sell it back to the dealer but it was I am sorry madam but we are not buying any cars for stock just now!
I kept it for 5 years and traded it in for the 993. Lost £10k in 5 years but that was better than the previous owner who lost £16k I 6 months

Yesterday I was chatting to a mate in the local boozer and he was telling me about his Iris Blue 993 he once owned. He was telling me how much he'd paid and sold it for and couldn't believe how much they'd inflated since. Bought for £27k and sold for £11k. At what price did the 993 bottom out and when?

From everything I've read since we 'spoke' yesterday it would seem that the 11k your mate achieved in 2008 was probably the epitome of the 993 bottoming out.

It dawned on me that my initial response would have been based on the cars that I was specifically considering at the time and therefore would have been in the '50k maximum' mileage category.

I didn't take into account that in 2008 there were apparently a lot of 11-15 year old 993s running around with 100k+ miles showing and I'm assuming* that your mates would have been one of those. :dont know:

Given the awful economic climate at the time it wouldn't actually surprise me if 'trade' for a high mileage 993 was as low as £11k. I assume* that he got the 996 for an equally absurd price.

Apologies for the doubts I expressed yesterday. I'd be genuinely interested to hear whether my *assumptions above are correct.

In February 2001 I went into Porsche Mann Island Liverpool to test drive a Boxster before placing an order for a 2.7 (arrived November 2001). Sitting forlorn amongst the 996's & Boxster's in the showroom was a light blue N registration 993. Now oh how I wished I had bought it rather than ordered the Boxster & in 2004 traded it for a 997. Of course we didn't know how well Porsche managed to cover up the issues on the M96 so well & what was to come.

I'll be asking him next time I see him and I'll also see what he can tell me about his 80s 3.2 & his 996.

The guy's quite a legend and it's always a pleasure having a good chat with him.

He followed in Che Guevara's footsteps and wrote a book on it:

(first post, hello all!)

I bought my very tidy 83k mile C2 993 manual coupe, silver and black, non vario, for £20,500 in 2011 from a dealer and sold it back to him a couple of years later after a big tax bill for around 18-19k with 92k on it, but it needed a few things doing which effectively meant I felt i'd sold it for the same price i'd bought it for give or take.

I was happy with that at the time!

I pay a lot more attention to used car prices now!

oh well, no regrets, made small amounts on the next two (non Porsche) cars, so overall :)

Will be back in a Porsche very soon!

My memory is the 993 bottomed out around 07-08.

I bought my first Porsche in 04, a 996C2 manual , with 42k miles, paid £27k in Cridfords for it.
I sold in 07 and bought a very similar C2 manual with 43k miles! .. except it was a 993, for £28200 privately.
From memory 993's had already been increasing in value from about 05. I believe '04-'06 were the 996/993 crossover years price wise.

Bought my C4 from Virgin for £26K with 66.5K on the clock in December 2006 and sold it in 2016 for £36.5. with I think it was 103/4K on the clock.

Surely they bottomed out with a certain Mr George Eaton's car, eh?
