First time 996 Porsche purchase

996?

After so much concern about purchasing a 996 , with all its potential engine problems ims bore score etc , and especially as the one I've looked at is on 130k so is likely to give up anytime, I decided to look at a 997 in the hope that Porsche would have rectified all these major problems , but NO they haven't even a much newer model considerably more expensive aswell still suffers from these problems, in the words of victor meldrew 'I don't believe it" it's making me think why would I be reckless with my money and buy a Porsche?? , I'm so disappointed as I have wanted one and now I'm in the position to have one I'm seriously thinking twice

They are amazing cars from behind the wheel so don't be too put off just yet.

If you are looking at 997's you could get into a 996 with Hartech engine rebuild for less money than a 997, they don't come along too often but if you are quick and keep your eyes peeled you may come across one.

I talked myself out of buying one 6 years ago and went down the route of looking at either an XKR or an SL500 instead. I'd gone right off the idea of buying something that was gonna cause me a headache and rip my wallet. A year later I was in a position buy a car. By chance a 996 was up for sale at a local independent dealer. I thought at least go and have a look. 2 days later and a test drive and the deposit was down. I was s****ing myself about it. I even called a local Porsche specialist to discuss the problems, etc. and she soon talked me into realising I'd done the right thing.

Best choice I'd ever made and I am now hooked for life. The only thing I'll be changing my 911 for is another 911. Anyone who chooses not to buy one of these cars due to internet horror stories is very sadly missing out.......and a wuss!

If you want to feel safe in the knowledge there's not much chance of a massive engine bill, buy a reasonable mileage 996 3.4 as they're the most reliable engine until the 997 gen 2 came out.

I guess you know that if you want a 997 without the issues that worry you, its a Gen 2 model with tbe DFI emgie to go for and MY2009 onwards.

If you are unlucky to get scored bores with a 996 or 997 Gen 1 and if you are not a DIY guy, its a £10k bill from the likes of Hartech (possibly £8k if lucky).

You can reduce the bill if you drop the engine, send it to Hartech and then refit it yourself.

All cars have their issues - SL500 nice car but very expensive to fix the air suspension system which is a common fault.

We don't want to dissuade you from getting a 911 more, don't buy the first one you see. Have a look at a few different cars and then get an idea for condition and how they look and drive. And then make sure you get a PPI when you finally find "the one", we'd hate you to come back in a few weeks time and say you'd purchased a lemon.

I might be biased but I agree the 3.4 Carrera 2 is the one to go for...

Thanks for all the replies, this particular car has just had a major service on 129k , at Cridfords in Surrey! a new alternater , water pump and condensers , it's also had a dansk sports exhaust fitted 2 years ago , so it seems it's been looked after , seller is asking 11.995k which I think is too much I was thinking 9.5/10 k would be more like it on the mileage of 133k ? , if I could get it for that I'd be happy to keep it around 5 years put an extra 10k in mileage on it and sell and get most of my money back , (if nothing major goes wrong) worth the gamble I keep telling myself ðŸ˜¬ðŸ˜¬ðŸ‘ðŸ», and reading between the lines I think there is a strong possibility these models will start to go up in value , especially as the major machanical issues associated with them are now preventable

Looking at the classifieds the asking price looks about right as the car is being sold by a dealer. They probably gave the £9.5k you're looking to pay so it all depends on how keen they are to sell. Make an offer, they can only say no.

Maybe, but probably not, the bull market is likely over for a good few years. Look at where the financial markets went this year (nowhere). And then there will be city dwellers shedding their old cars in 2020. You might retain value if you have a nice one, but the cost of running a 20 year old car will counter it a bit.

^^ This, just go buy it and enjoy it.

The most it can cost you is what you pay for it minus the value of a roller (upto £7k). So you are not talking life changing sums in terms of car ownership here.
