Hi

I've had my 986 Boxster S for a while now and wondered if there are any preventative maintenance jobs that need doing on the soft top / mechanism?

It's currently working fine with no undue noises and looks in good condition. It has the glass rear screen if that makes any difference.

Any advice welcome.

If you open the roof half way .. its what we call the service position , you can unplug the lower ball joint on the cables and raise the base of the hood (bit below the glass ).

There should be a strap velcroed to the bottom section , you use this to hook over the far left of the cab roof .. it holds the rear screen in the up postion.

You do this when working on the engine .

Ok so do this then check the rear drains holes each side .. any leaf can block these and cause water ingress to the car .. if you get this on the passenger side .. which is where it normally happens then it can flood the alarm control unit under the passenger seat .. thats pretty dam bad and expensive .

Anyways .. look at the CTL .. ( convertible Top Lid ) .. there are 2 pins each side that go into an adjustable hole .. grease in there .

Look above the drain holes each side .. there is a slide rail the CTL runs along .. grease that .

Check the rod each side above the drain hole that connects the roof to the drive mechanism .. obviously make sure its not broken one side .. not that uncommon shall we say .. also look at the bushes .. are they still there . if not then replace asap .. if the bushes fall out or fall appart then the mechanism can go beyond its limits ..

Roof will stop working one side basically .. fine if you watch it .. not so if you dont .. roof driveing one side only .. ie that or a cable break will bend the CTL .. thats not so good .

Use gummi fledge on the rear rubber below the rear screen .. also clean the CTL were it touches this rubber .. this is only for creaking noises and not operation though .

If the rods have a red plastic coloured end then they are original .. kinda past there sell by date now .. if white then they have been replaced .

Thanks deMort, stunning reply. Looks like I'll be busy tomorrow.

Thanks Iain ...... thread saved for Spring Time maintenance ...... :thumb:

Demort - you are amazing

Is there a version of this procedure to check the drain holes on the 981 Spyder?

But still need cleaning and reproofing!

:)
