is there a correlation between mileage and engine rebuilds?

Keen to know if there is or not based on experience rather than opinion or hearsay

i expect nature and frequency of usage will have a higher impact on engine wear but keen to draw on the experiences (not opinions) of those in the know!

I don't think there is any correlation. Mine was done at around 150k as it was leaking oil everywhere and a AA contractor put lawnmower fuel in it burning an exhaust valve. Was still running though.

While mine was being done there was another on the bench that had covered 60k-something. Personally I doubt 60k was the actual mileage on the engine.

Nope.

Main cause is oil leaks which can be a partial strip depending on whats leaking .

Im kinda in the know but 993 is not my specialist area .. although i can always ask the guys at work that it is .

great thanks keep it coming

These engines can have severe wear and still run fairly well. Personally I wouldnt trust miles as a key indicator for two reasons. 1 these cars are easy clocked 2 you dont know where the miles were done. Motorway with a cool engine or sat in town with the oil cooler fans working. The latter induces wear much quicker.
Its almost certain most cars will have worn exhaust valve guides. Oil leaks are common and some need the motor apart to remedy. Perhaps the best indicator of when to rebuild is oil consumption. If its more than a liter in 800 miles of fairly hard driving I would rebuild.

I can only go off personal experience.

Mine is just about to touch 150K miles. She pulls like a train, and this last summer in temperatures hitting 40 plus degrees she took me to
Italy and back, that's over 2.5k miles and I doubt she used 250ml of oil the whole trip, yet I took 3 litres (just in case).

If the paperwork is there, I'd be looking at clutch changes in a 993s life. I've known these to be replaced at 30k mile intervals, one I viewed at 95k miles was on its fourth. Mine is still on its original.

Clutch replacement in my eyes at lower miles generally means more town stop start traffic, and that's never as a good for an engine as all day on a free flowing road or motorway.

I've heard of a 180K took apart for rebuild because of minor leaks, and other than gasket fails the rest was all within tolerances.

Valve stems pops up its ugly head sometimes and I understand this as there's much in common with the previous 964. However I've not seen a 993 smoke which is a sure sign of these failing, and mine def does not.

170k and she's been cosseted. Oil and filters changed more than neccesary probably. Never wassed until fully warm (and wassed often). No smoke but a bit leaky (being sorted). I'm only the second owner, early life was OPC regular service but the clutch had gone at 30k. Interior reeked of Chanel when I got it, easy to work out.
The valve guide wear is a mystery to me seems to be an obsession in the States perhaps related to the SAI system.
20 years plus of evolution with teutonic attention to detail, but if you buy a pup then it can be a very expensive nightmare.

964 is on 275k miles at the moment , no leaks or heavy oil consumption, used every day, still strong as ever and reliable , top end rebuilt at 95k

Really good point about clutch replacement as an indicator (although you never know you have all the receipts). Clever point, probably applicable to all used cars.

c90k first and only clutch on my 964. Still going strong at 130k miles when I sold it :thumb:

Note: If there's a dark circular mark on the rear shelf this usually indicates the presence of a trilby so expect several clutch replacements to have been undertaken :what:

Hi

I took the top end of my 993 Tip motor apart at 180k miles for a broken piston ring. The car had mostly been used on motorways. The inside of the engine was as clean as a whistle. It didn't smoke or use oil, but the guides were worn, so I had them done. I assumed that the bores or pistons would be worn so I put a low mile set that I bought from the USA on, but actually I needn't had bothered as the original ones were in still in spec and in fact you could still see the cross hatching in the bores. Cams were great. Changed the timing belt ramps and that was pretty much it. Maybe the head studs as well just for safety. I can't remember.

I've got mine booked in to 9M for a top end rebuild this coming winter.
No smoke and good compression - just too many little oil leaks ruining the driveway :nooo:
It's now on 113k, but the team at 9M said there's no rush for this as all is OK otherwise, it would just be nice to get it done while it's off the road over winter.

This is that mission creep thing I mentioned.....
I had a cracked plug lead - so I had them all replaced - and then the dizzy caps and rotor arms - and some other little bits - and arranged a top end rebuild.

Will it ever end :?:
