First, get your box of parts, dump some tools in there, head to the garage with it:

It's not going to look like this soon:

The surround just pulls up:

Function First shifter is held on by this grub screw:

Where we run into the first problem, as these:

Don't have what we need. What's larger than 2mm, but smaller than 2.5mm? That's right, the 18th Century, AKA 3/32".

One quick trip to the hand tools section of my local Wickes later:

Bingo:

Now it's time for the Torx bolts that hold the centre console in - a mixture of T30 and T20:

The trim panels simply pop off, revealing the screws underneath:

This plate comes free when you've removed the bolt:

There's a particularly annoying screw under the coin holder, which caused me some headscratching until I located it:

Pull the connectors off the window switches and remove the ash-tray unit, there is another screw underneath:

Don't forget the essentials:

The white screw-cover will not be on there when this car leaves the garage next:

Pop out the side-panel on the left of the handbrake and lift the console out of the way, underneath you'll find this:

This entire post brought to you by virtue of this little electric lantern:

The 997 GT3 shifter is definitely made of better materials than the others - note the very large metal bushings holding the mechanism into the cradle:

Still, it's coming out!

Push the locking covers up and twist to lock, freeing the cable ends:

They just pull up and out:

Look at that bushing:

Undo all four of the nuts that hold the shifter down - one pictured here, they're all 10mm:

And out:

New SSK, the green cradle, when locked in place, centres the shift lever:

Like this (note plastic bushings on this):

Put the cables back in, remove the green Plastic-of-Centring, row through the gears whilst making "brmmm brmmm" noises to check that you've got the cables back in the right place:

I'm going to take it for a spin when the DVLA acknowledge the new plate, so leaving the console off until then, so time to tidy up:

This photograph just for Mark:

I don't suppose you'll be looking to sell that now redundant 997 GT3 shift mech will you?? :?:

I'm afraid you have been beaten to it. I've also got a short shaft (fnar) coming from Function First, which I may try if the SSK+longer shaft doesn't work for me, so may yet re-fit the GT3 mechanism with the short shaft - time will tell.

I looked at every single picture .. ive had god knows how many of these appart but i still enjoy seeing the work involved .. love the lantern btw :)

Hidden screws are always fun to find !

Blue plate bung req .. i agree there .. that would annoy even me .

Im rather scared by what you have hanging over your pride and joy though .. whilst i only have a cheap bike .. that would worry me

Edit .. if you use the green tool then it will be aligned correctly and you can refit the consol .

I used the green tool to centre the lever, then clicked the cable ends in place so there was no slack, removed the green tool and selected all the gears- if this is enough to validate that I did it correctly then I'll refit the console?

When i replace cables then i use the green tool to set them up and then refit the consol... its basically what its for .

You Dont have to use it but if you dont then just make sure you can select all gears smoothly.

Good work. I decided to take the plunge on an FF shifter last week but the Delrin knob is out of stock with the 996 6 speed pattern on it. :frustrated:

It wouldn't be going on until next year anyway. No rush.

PS Getting something down from that ceiling must be like playing a very expensive game of Kerplunk. :D

PPS I forgot to comment on that serious piece of machining on the previous page. Wowzers! Some time has gone into that. Was that a custom one off or do the company do a batch? I shudder to think of the cost.

The tappet chest is a test piece, seen here bolted into a head to test all the dimensions:

The verdict is that there are a couple of tiny things that need attention, but overall it's good to sign-off, which is handy as there's a virgin billet bolted to the deck of the 5-axis that made the test piece ready to fire into action on Monday once we've given them the revisions.

Once the new one is made then it'll go into an engine for some miles over winter, then we'll pull it back out again to check that it's happy in Spring.

If that's all fine then we'll consider the tappet chest problem solved (with the application of a couple of billets of aluminium and some cash).

Proper commitment to the cause. Nice job.

Who's doing the machining then? Hartech or a sub contractors. Mazak 5th axis?
