Just got back into 996 ownership last week after picking up a cracking Polar silver 2003 4S from Kaaimans International in Nottingham. The car is in immaculate condition and the deal included all the major corrective items such as IMS bearing replacement, RMS, Clutch and Flywheel, brakes, belts, coffin arms and borescope etc. I cannot praise Gary at Kaaimans highly enough as he made the purchase a real pleasure addressing everything the car needed, even on a preventative basis.

The only issue I have is that the rear silencers are splitting and one is pretty bad. I had it in OPC this week and they noticed one is very slightly passing and you can feel exhaust gasses coming through. Question is can they be repaired/welded as the Service manager said it was beyond welding, so next option is replacement silencers. If that's the case what's the recommendations in terms of std replacement. The car has PSE and I'm keen to keep it switchable and don't want it noisier than standard PSE. Any thoughts on replacements ?

Sounds great, pics please, we love a 4S!

Kaimanns should be sorting the exhaust for you- get the ball in their court as you do not want to be landed with that bill so soon and it should really have been picked up beforehand.

There are options to retain the factory switchable system- start with a chat with Top Gear exhausts, a very well regarded site sponsor.

I do miss my Polar Silver 4s....best colour in my opinion.

The PSE system is manufactured by Eisenmann for Porsche...you can buy a replacement system from them at a fraction of the cost less the Porsche tax and still retain an OEM system.

I will try and get some pics posted soon - once I work out how to do it !

Kaaimans are covering the cost of repair, I'm just keen to get some expert opinion on options for replacement that keeps it as close to standard as possible.

I didn't know that, worth remembering because the OE kit is £

Congrats on a lovely looking car with all the right bits sorted. Very normal for the boxes to be split on the bottom seal. Both of mine were too. Had Paul of PCW sort mine.. he's a perfectionist :thumb:

Most people think they're beyond repair.. WRONG! Personally I'd forget the value too and have the bypass done. Only gets PSE noisy above 3000rpm anyway.

Time for a laugh...got a quote from Porsche Aberdeen today to replace one silencer only...parts and labour comes to the grand sum of £3131 inc vat !!

Don't think I will be taking them up on that option 😬

Well those shiny showrooms, glossy receptionists and coffee machines don't pay for themselves! :D

That is a staggering sum though, even by OPC standards.

Beautiful car, my local exhaust shop offer welding at £150 just find local garage with some experience.

I don't know if you are aware but PSE switch itself to quiet mode 30 to 45 mph some people disable this function but a lot still is working I have disconnected mine and I love it!!!!

Just take for a ride and drive slow with open windows you will notice when it close if so follow this instruction to get rid of this stupid mod.

https://www.renntech.org/forums/topic/2470-remove-pse-cutout-in-2-minutes-no-tools-required/

The only caveat to that mod is to 'exercise' the valves regularly with the switch or they seize up.

When I did it I snipped one leg of the diode only, in case it ever needs to be reversed for some reason.
