Afternoon All!

I have a spare 2 button case (with small Porsche badge!), key blade is already cut to fit barrels - but no circuit. It came with my car.

What is the best way to make use of it as currently it's only good for unlocking doors and turning ignition on :dont know:

Can I source a 2nd hand circuit out of a different vehicle key, change the transponder (for about £3) then re-code to my car?

Thanks guys :thumb:

The key fob has a glass tube in it .. this is the transponer to allow the car to start .. you can fit any transponder you want into the key head but to get it so that it starts the car you will need the Ipas codes from an OPC and a tester to do so.

The key will then start the car but only unlock it via the key barrel.

You Cannot use a second hand key fob to unlock the car .. the circuit board in other words .. it cant be coded .

In fact once a new fob has been coded it cant be reused on any other car .. even if you entered the code numbers on the tag incorrectly .. you have basically killed it if you do .

Thanks Iain.

Is there anything I can do with it?

Can you get a replacement brand new circuit board/transponder from OPC or is it a bit of a pointless excercise?

You can buy a new key fob head thing with transponder and remote in from opc and they can program it to your car and swop over your cut blade to the new head. You save a few quid as opc are pretty expensive for the key Blade.

Some key specialists can program a transponder (not timpsons) so your cut Blade will start the car but they will never get remote unlocking to work as dermort explained

my circuit board is dead on my spare key so can only be used to unlock and start using manual insertion into the door etc. Unfortunately as mine is a v early 996, it also sets the alarm off if I do this. ( some cars were incorrectly wired with the doors sides from the factory)

Ah okay, thanks for all your replies.

As I spare it wouldn't matter if the remote function did not work but would it set the alarm off if the door is unlocked manually? (it's an '04)

no yours will be fine, just try using your normal key in the door to test it out.

If the car is locked with a fob but unlocked with the key barrel it can cause an alarm tirgger .. normally you get 10 seconds but as already mentioned this isnt gossble !

As a second key that will start the car in an emergency then its fine .. the siren/ horn will shut up sooner or later lol .

The only proper way is to replace the key fob on the second key .. but if you do then use it now and again to stop the codes rolling too far forwards so that it no longer works .

Its also not very cheap .. Porsche DO like to make a profit you know :(

A transponder when coded will Always start the car reguardless of time since last used .

Manual lock and it should be fine .. but im not going to say yes .. and the horn/ siren wont go off .. these things do sometimes have a mind of there own !

I know .. i have driven a car into the workshop with the alarm going off .. and it didnt stop .. dam good thrashing though with a tree branch and it soon shut up ;)

Most said already but some clarity:

You need:

A a key (to physically turn ignition)
B a transponder chip to turn the immobiliser off and allow start
C a remote head if you want remote locking

A is easy and what you have, can be cut from a photo of existing.

B you can buy a transponder chip from ebay. But it can only be added to your car by OPC or an indy trusted by Porsche. It needs a code from Porsche and coding with PIWIS. Some independant people can physically remove your ECU, read out the chip and write a new transponder into it. But this is just as expensive as OPC. Timpsons cannot do it with this type of transponder - it needs adding to the car, a copy is useless as its a random code I think.

C You need a brand new remote head as they come with a code attached to a bit of paper. If you don't have the bit of paper the remote head is junk - so used ones can't be used. This is then coded into your car using the PIWIS system. AFAIK it does not need any code from Porsche.

Demort - when opened with the key I have to start the car within 10sec or so or the alarm sounds. If the alarm is sounding, starting the car shuts it up. Is this not how they all work?!

Ha ha ha!!

Okay, understood. I will try and make something of it & keep as a cheap spare in case of emergency - cheers guys

Not all of them .. sometimes the alarm will continue until it resets .. occasionally it wont reset and you have to lock the car and unlock it again.

This is when other mechanics start shouting at you lol .

Rule of thumb you get the car starting inside 10 seconds and it will be fine but there are some cars out there that trip the alarm as soon as its unlocked .

No set answer im afraid .. or in other words I Dont have the answer :D

Spare keys often stop working as they havent been used in ages ..the car uses a rolling code which continually advances .. if the spare hasent been used in i think 250 times with the main key then it can fall too far behind on the rolling code and wont work .

Thats how i understand it anyways but not gossble .. Porsche dont give out this sort of info im afraid .

Some how the car alters the key transponder to set the new code .. :dont know:
