I,ve just bought a red 911 but the bonnet has some very noticeable scratches from when it's been washed or that's what it looks like. The OPC have said that they will re spray the bonnet as they have polished it already and they can't do any better without spraying. Should I go ahead with the re spray or is there a chance that the colours wouldn't be a 100% match and might be obviously different ?

It takes a very talented painter who can match edge to edge. You can count on both hands how many people can do it well. The general methodology will be to spray the bonnet and flick the paint(or blend) the paint on to the surrounding panels. This hides any discrepancy in the original paint vs new paint colour.
If the scratch is unable to be removed via polishing, then this is your only path forward really. You would expect the paint shop that OPC use to be of a high standard. If the job isn't to your satisfaction they can always do it again.
My 2 cents

It's very light swirls but noticeable though they tried to dismiss it blaming the fact it was inside and the spotlights brought it out more which definitely doesn't help.

It's a 14 plate gts , if it was your car would you do it or live with it ?

My advice , take it to Clarke Aitken at Polished Bliss in Kintore ....he will advise you if it can be detailed/ corrected ...if not and it needs a restart ...

I recommend Kinghorn Bodyshop out at Blackburn ...I had a nasty stone chip on a 997 GT3 ... they sprayed it ....I could not notice any mis match ....

Both close by you , if you are in ABZ or nearby.

I've got a scratch in my clearcoat that a good detailed couldn't remove. If someone was offering to paint the car for nothing, then I'd take their hand off. Most cars through the OPC network will get a dusting of paint in their paint chips corrected during the sale process through the cars life.

The cars in OPC wilmslow so will have to have it done by them before I paid and collected it.

In that case rest assured, they'll be using Road and Race and they have an excellent reputation. I've got a paint related topic lurking which I'm hoping to share shortly, and R & R would be the people doing the work. I've seen their paintwork and it's as good as any.
In that case I've seen your car whilst I was getting a service the other day. Lovely motor :thumb:

Shouldn't actually be a problem to spray bonnet only, you can get away with it on a 911 as the wings are not flat panels to bonnet, spraying a wing you do have to blend into the door as that is a flat panel transition, also some colours are trickier than others and a blend can still look wrong.
I would suggest first getting a detailer to look at it and see if they think they can correct it, they are usually pretty skilled with polishing out swirls etc. that the opc would say respray. Would be cheaper and quicker certainly than new paint

I dont know what the Porsche approved body centre is like near you but when I took mine to Poole accident repair which is this regions approved shop and I told them NO blending, they got worried and said it wouldnt match ,I repeated NO blending so they got the spray shop foreman out he said he would do it personally and not blend , he said they like to blend because its easier . so he sprayed a test piece and held it to the car, as expected it was not a straight match new paint v 8 yr old paint etc . he then used his knowledge to tweak the colour adding 3 drops of some colour I would not have expected to be in the paint. anyway the colour match on the bumpers was better than from the factory so I asked them to paint the bonnet which they did "with NO blending" it was an amazing match . So my suggestion is find who the local approved bodyshop is and go talk to them bear in mind at the OPC these are car sales men NOT paint specialists so I would take there thoughts with a pinch of salt and go seek a proper opinion from guys that paint and detail porsches for a living, stress no blending and see what they can offer you. :thumb: :thumb:

Having done a bit of painting myself I don't think its that difficult to do a front end re-spray well. I don't think anyone would just do the bonnet on its own, you'd tend to also spray the inner bits of the wings too.

You can also add a little bit of thinners to the edges to smooth the blend, and also you would normally go past the colour with the clear coat so that the whole area has a uniform fresh clear on it.

The above is just the way I've taught myself to paint, I'm definitely no pro by the way!

If OPC are footing the bill then they're obliged to get it right, I'd bite their arm off.

I'd ask them to respray the entire front end to make sure it's colour matched, that way you'll get rid of any stone chips etc.

Thanks guys very useful info that I would never have thought of myself, that's why I love this forum and more to the point the 997 section as the 991 section is non existent, hence my question regarding g a 991 on here.

Finalising the sale tomorrow so will put these points forward.

Why would they need to respray a bonnet with just light swirls :?: presumably there are stone chips as well? Light swirls can easily be removed without the need for a full respray.
Presambly when they say they have polished it, he means they've had the T cut out!
The car should obviously be perfect when purchased through an OPC, including the removal of all stone chips as opposed to bodging :thumb:

I suspect when it goes to the professionals at the body shop it will be having a paint correction as opposed to respray, unless there are noticeable stone chips?

I had my bonnet resprayed last year by OPC by their recommended paint shop and the job was very poor. The job had to be redone to correct it. Week later bonnet had a couple of chips again though.
