I had a WBAC bid on my car (2011 Carrera) for £37.5K a couple of days ago which is always a good barometer of a cars real value and not its speculative value.

I agree a M6 won't hold its value like a 997, but I don't really buy cars as a investment. I buy with my heart rather than my head. I bought a new Alfa Brera v6 in 2009 😊 I don't think they will drop as low as the old v10 as they are so unreliable.
The 4.4 v8 is a epic engine and the interior in a very nice place to be. Spec is usually very high too. B+O, night vision, surround cameras etc.
The only problem is they are too big to enjoy on our crappy roads.
I'd rather have a early 997.2 pdk, but not for £40k.
I agree wit the point made about private sellers wanting dealer money. It's just not achievable. Especially now has the buyer has more rights if the car has any issues if they buy from a dealer.

My concern is that they are not selling at their current prices. The one forum member I've seen who has sold his car, let it go for a lot less than advertised prices. It was still a dealer who bought it.
Comparing a £40k 2010 Carrera to a £30k 2014 M6 that was over £100k new and there is one winner imo.
I appreciate many buy 911 as a investment but I'm not that type of person.
The self build will be finished in 6-8 weeks. I'm using the VAT return to buy a car and I'm not getting another lease. 1 car for me from now on.

It seems to me to be broadly split between low mileage cars which fetch a high price (or at least the asking prices are higher) and the higher mileage cars which are lower on a spectrum.
The low mileage I cannot understand because cars are meant to be used and not using them can lead to problems as well as using them. I can see no merit in overpaying for a low mileage car
I'm looking for a 2010/2011 car and am willing to accept up to 75K mileage which only equates to average mileage in the worst case and there are many with mileages less than this. I will only do around 4K miles a year.
I can't help feeling that whilst Porsche is an enthusiasts marque prices have been affected by the low interest rate/easy money climate of the last ten years and my basic stance is to wait. At the end of the day whilst Porsche is a niche marque it does not have quite the cachet of Ferrari (a good thing in my view because a Porsche is much more useable; if I had unlimited funds I would prefer a Porsche to a Ferrari) and cars depreciate over time and most 911s cannot duck this.

FWIW ive sold a 996tt and two v8 m3s in the past two years privately.
I have priced them 2/3 between private and specialists trade prices.
Each has taken 1-2 months to sell, and they were forecourt prep with great history.
Now, i have a 997.1 c4s and, as with the previous cars (for better or worse!) have been tracking the sales of these on auto trader (private and trade). I see min 3 sold a week from my list of approx 20 cars (i track all the new to market ones). So, there are many that do not sell, but this is a far far more buoyant market than there was for the e90 M3 Comp packs. There there were the same dynamics of high specialist prices. But again a sensibly priced private sale was possible.
So, my my 997.1 c4s perspective, vs the e90 m3, things look pretty good to me.

Value is always relative to condition, availability and spec/desirablity. Yes you will see a broad spectrum of values but all relate to condition.
The argument of low mileage cars causing more problems than higher mileage is bizarre. A new vehicle has zero miles, is that expected to give problems or faultless performance? I know which I expect when buying a new vehicle. Surely the low mileage poorly maintained cars are the ones to avoid? With the low mileage, well maintained cars the ones to buy as a long term keeper and the higher mileage cheaper cars to buy as a daily?

If you are only going to be doing 4k miles a year these cars may suit you as after a few years the average per year will have reduced but bear in mind that by then a water-cooled 911 with 85k miles+ showing will have an even more limited appeal.

I would not pay a premium for a low mileage car; I prefer one that has been used regularly and, of course, properly maintained.
