"Tip Emergency Run" - [Conductor Plate fixed it]

I've got a slight gearbox leak (top of the box - filter needs replacing). My Indy are aware and have checked the fluid level and topped it up a little (was slightly low).

Prior to getting to the Indy i'd seen a little fluid (not oil) on the garage floor. Literally a few drops. Hence getting the car to my Indy to diagnose the gearbox leak.

Before all this I had had a single 'Tiptronic Emergency run' mode alert on the dash (gear selection on dash flashes 2nd and D or similar). This prompted me to check the rear of the car when cold the next day in the garage, and that's when i saw the fluid. Later confirmed as light loss of gearbox oil (some misting over the rear sump area too).

I've now had a few more of these dash alerts (all at low speed) which leads me to think it isn't low fluid related.

The car is in early August to have new front tyres and alignment (both pretty much shot on the inside). Plan was to get these swapped out first in case they are the cause of the Tip warning (inside fronts are WELL below the wear marker).

I suspect that i'll need a new TCU (or conductor plate) - this seems like a common cause of the Tip Emergency Run alerts for a lot of 911 and Boxster Tip owners.

Has anyone had the TCU conductor plate replaced? Is it a pretty straight forward job? The box has to be dropped from my car at some point later in August to replace the leaking filter, so i suspect getting the TCU conductor plate replaced then would make some sense?

I'm pretty sure this is the error my Indy read from the PIWIS: "Speed comparison between n2 and n3 implausible"

Noted elsewhere too: https://rennlist.com/forums/996-turbo-forum/964368-tiptronic-emergency-run-warning.html

This has happened on my older 911 - 52 plate car *possibly* with the older Merc / ZF gearbox? (I forget what year they changed these)

EDIT - http://www.911uk.com/viewtopic.php?t=122035&sid=5e7130f75800889c0ff15b6006bf5f6e additional details on the Tiptronic Control Unit and the conductor plate from this older thread. The conductor plate looks like a viable first part to swap. Part number: 140 270 056 1 Looks to be Merc-based part, around £150. I haven't called OPC yet for their quote :puh:

140-270-116-1 might be a newer replacement part (unclear yet if this is 'better' than the older part number, or just a newer manufacture)

The Merc box on the Porsche is the Z229.6 i believe: (Conductor plate replacement video - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ImUYRu-VhCE )

The conductor plates on these can be swapped for replacement units. I don't think that's possible on the later Z229.9 Merc boxes (although i'm pretty sure they aren't used on the 996 Porsches, or later models Porsches for that matter)

Cheers

The speed comparison referes to the speed of the input shaft and the speed of the output shaft being out of spec in regards to the map settings .

Neither sensor is in the valve body .

Im not sure of the term TCU .. tip control unit perhaps ?

The faults for this would indicate a sensor fault , a plug connection fault , a wiring corrosion or short circuit fault or a Tip cu fault.

If its intermitant which it sounds like it is then its a bitch to find without just throwing parts at it .

Correct oil lvl is usefull but im struggleing to see how the lvl would alter readings from these speed sensors.

To be honest im not sure if you can buy the sensors or even get access to them without a box removal and strip .. my knowledge here is limited :(

My only advise would be to try and locate a specialist that rebuild these gearboxes .. opc / indy are limited as to what they can do with tip boxes im afraid .. my indy is no different .

The 3.4 carrera has the ZF box, the 3.6 carrera has the merc box which is similar to the one in the turbo.

Cheers JKH - i'm always forgetting which box is in which car doh!

DeMort - yep, Tiptronic Control Unit. After trawling the web there do seem to be a lot of folks with the Merc boxes (on cars other than the 911) who have ended up changing the conductor plate and / or a few solenoids to fix the "Tip Emergency Run" warning. (Quite a few with the same speed inconsistency warning that i think i'm getting)

I've not checked prices of the conductor plate yet, (but i assume they are far cheaper than the whole TCU) so probably worth a first shot.

Cheers for the info! :thumb:

I supplied a new Conductor Plate (which i understand houses the temp sensor and speed sensor) to my Indy. The car needed new front tyres and alignment anyway, so i had the Conductor Plate replaced at the same time. (This connects to the Valve Body that houses the solenoids underneath the gearbox, inside the sump pan area. The Tiptronic Control Unit [TCU] resides inside the car under a seat)

The Conductor Plate cost me about £130 from a german motor factors.

I ended up having to book the RAC to trailer the car on a flatbed to the garage, because the Tip warning was coming on all the time. The gearbox was also clunking badly into first and reverse, so i didnt want to chance driving it.

Here's a tip for anyone with the 996 Aero kit: loading the car onto a flatbed is possible. But you need patience and lots of wooden chocks to lift the nose up as you drive onto the trailer - even if the trailer seems to lower really nicely lol!

Long story short: I had the "N73 speed sensor P0715" error, as well as the "ATF temp unreadable" error when plugged into PIWIS.

After fitting the new Conductor Plate the gearbox errors are gone, as is the clunking into first and reverse.

I've probably jinxed it now by typing up the results (only driven the car 20 miles back from the garage). Hopefully this post is useful to other Tip owners who get these errors as a result of the Tip Emergency Run light.
