Harness loom replaced under recall and found...........

A quick update on this; I've rung my local OPC in Colchester and they can't help or tell me anything about the recall. I've called PC Reading and they too have no note of it, their recall system was replaced in 2008 apparently. Though they're going to try and find out for me.

A little worrying that a seemingly safety related recall isn't proving easy to get an answer on....

Another update as they've just called back, apparently the wiring loom was replaced/updated in Jan '96, and as mine was built in the May it isn't affected, so might help others (aligns with what Stuart had been told earlier in the thread).

For reference mine was registered in the September, so might give an indication to others of time gap between registration and build.

Cheers

Just spoke to someone else at Porsche Bolton, it's now showing that the work was completed in 2010 at OPC Leeds. This makes sense as the previous owner used Leeds for quite a bit of work.

I've just checked some invoices & there is Warranty Invoice for July 2010 showing:

LAB W301 Net £376.83 (this is labour I think)

P000.043.204.61 053801/REPAIR KIT WIRI RG3 Net £53.25

So at least you guys can go back to your OPC with a part number

........ plus my VIN comes up clear on the online recall checker. so I guess that leaves me in the clear.
Thanks

Hi J

What link were you using for the online checker?
I know of this one: Linky - but this states "The search tool will return information on applicable recalls made from calendar year 1999 until today.

Thing is - I don't know if this means cars post 1999, or any recalls announced post 1999 - and when was the wiring harness recall made available?

Were you using the same link?
Yes it was, but the tech note was dated 2001 , so I thought it should be good n there. Tbh as I've actually check the loom label I think I should be ok.
That's all Porsche would do (if they could find nd the way no!)
Cheers

Engine Loom TSB

As this is a critical issue, please be aware that the TSB info in this thread was for US market cars, and most of the loom numbers quoted are not applicable to R0W cars. The only one to appear in RoW PET is 993 607 016 04, listed for '95 MY M64.05/06.

Without sight of the RoW TSB, and being aware of these issues (first seen on a US market car imported to UK a long while ago ..) it would seem prudent to check that the engine loom is a part number ending in 1X and/or visit your friendly PC.

Hope this helps, cheers, Maurice.

Nice to see you on the forum, Maurice! I checked my loom number and it is 993.607.016.04. Mine is a UK car and all seems fine for the time being. Whilst annoying that it hadn't been addressed prior to my purchasing it, I'm booking this in with Swindon OPC in the near future.

I'm pretty sure yours will need replacing pierrebear as its within the range of defective looms. Mine is an early 94 car and my loom is 993.607.016.14-0a with a written on date of 31/05/2002 so obviously replaced.

Thanks, ollster- thought as much. Will get it booked in but will have to wait until early September now before can get the car over to the mainland.

I would get it in with some urgency, and not drive it at all if you can help it. Is the insulation crumbling in the engine compartment ?

I have seen looms where there are lengths of bare copper. All it takes is for the wrong ones to rub together, and you could lose your car (happened to me once with a brand new VW GTI). If the car has been regularly subjected to a hot climate the problem is exacerbated ..

Someone alerted me this topic had appeared, so I registered especially to respond.

HTH, cheers, Maurice

Roughly 7-8yrs ago I had my engine taken out to have work carried out, the engine wiring harness was in a terrible mess, bare wires showing where the heat had destroyed the insulation, the mileage at that time was around 87k.
After checking with the main dealer regarding the recall, it appears my harness had already been replaced, so even the replacement harness had broken down.
A new harness was sourced and fitted.

Maurice, thanks for adding your authority to this discussion. I've had my 1995 993 for a year and will definitely look into this. Is it worth flagging this up on the PCGB forum 993 page.

Despite being told by my local OPC that the amended looms were installed from Jan' 96 onwards I decided to check for myself, finally got round to doing it on Sunday.

Opening the fuse box up the loom looks all OK, and the number is 993.607.016.14, but what I can't see is which ones are OK. As I understand it the ones mentioned aren't UK model related?

Can anyone confirm, thanks?

From this thread on rennlist it says that looms marked 993.607.016.15 are the final US and ROW version for all cars, varioram, non varioram, and turbo.
https://rennlist.com/forums/993-forum/534382-engine-wiring-harness.html
The US TSB seems to bear this out, as the replacement kit is the same for all cars and includes dummy plugs for the airpump etc for cars where they are not present.
as 993.607.016.15 is the number on my loom this is is reassuring.

Hi guys. By way of an update, I've just collected the car back from Swindon OPC where the work was carried out under recall. Other than being a little peeved at not getting a new Porsche toy as a courtesy car, they were utterly faultless.

I took the liberty of taking some pics of my old wiring loom (one of the defective ones). You can see that part of the insulation had started wearing away and exposed the live wires. Given the length of time that's passed and the fact that my car isn't exactly a garage queen though, I was expecting worse...anyway glad to have got it sorted. Just taken the car for a shakedown drive and it's as gorgeous as ever to drive even in miserable conditions.

I also attach a picture of the invoice from Swindon OPC - if only all Porsche bills were like this one!!

Thanks all for your help and guidance. I'd encourage anyone who's not yet had the recall to check with OPCs against their VIN and part number and get it done.

Cheers,

Pierre
