Hi New to this site, and new to Porsche, I have a couple of noises some one might be able to help on my 986 2003 Boxster S

1.) when I open the car, there is a ticking noise coming from behind the main air vents, it goes on for 10 seconds then you don't hear it again? even with the fan on you don't hear it. it's only when I open the car ? and no key in the ignition?

2.) when I go over speed humps I get a small clonk from the front, nothing bad but I can hear and feel it, the car has no play when steering I have googled this and a couple of surggestions were Droplinks?

If anyone can help ? Thanks

@ madalaa bless you young man .. i do my best.
Btw if your ever down south and out in the country where you used to take your old car then drop in and give us a shout .. i do love to meet forum members :D

Ok ill start with number 2 as its the easier of your questions ..

It can be many things but 2 things are the more obvious ones , the drop links or link rods as they are known will make that type of noise ..

Wheel on a full lock , grab the center part of the bar and try and move it up and down , then in and out .. you are checking for play in the ball joints.

Any movement and yup it needs replaceing .

My guess and the more common fault on these is the diagonal arms .. basically they connect to the lower arm / coffin arm and then to the body work.

You cant check for play in these , the noise is not dangerous but it is annoying .

There are 4 of these , one on each corner and as you hit a bump in the road you will hear a bonk .. bonk bonk type of noise .

Any one with experience of these cars can just drive it and say yup .. its them .

Ok no. 1 ..

This is unusual and not one that rings a bell but a couple of ideas ..

Door open and theres not much going on but the position is a clue .. check the fuel flap solinoid is releaseing .. open the door then lift the fuel flap to check if the noise is that .

Second check .. i think a relay , no idea which one but open the door then put your hand up above the fuse box .. the relay board is there .. just feel if any relay is clicking .. if so note which one and re post here .

EDIT .. i just joined the Boxster forum .. ill have a browse at the weekend :D

Sorry 911UK .. but im not going anywhere !

Hi....Thanks for getting back to me...on issue 2 that sounds spot on. I'm going to pop it into my local Porsche specialist for them to have a look, as you said it does not effect the handling just an annoying noise. As for issue 1 i still have no clue. but it only happens as I open the cat door it's a clicking noise from the stero/fan area on the dash? tick tick tick tick tick tick then stops...I had an issue once where the NAV cd's sticker had come loose and whilst spinning it was catching and making a noise but I've checked this? I will have to ask the garage if they can help.

But THANK YOU for coming back to me :)

Aghhh the noise is from the radio / pcm ? its the cd tray .. common fault with PCMs ... its sticking a bit on an end stop as far as i understand it .. it cant quite get the mechanism into the correct place so trys for 10 secs then gives up.

You get something similar with heater control motors on 987 but that needs the ignition on to happen .

Dont worry about it basically.
