The Boxster Gamble - Should I? I did - Progress thread!

From one Mechanic to another :thumb:

Rear bracket thats broken for the gearbox/exhaust .. that doesnt happen so due to the accident i would have thought but like you i cant see anything else :dont know:

Love you car threads Mark! Will follow this one as well :thumb: You should become a part time car dealer, buy cheap, do your magic and sell at a good profit. I'd buy one of your cars as I've seen your attention to detail on many threads before!

Coloured crest centre caps along with new rear lights arrived.

Caps will go on when I can be arsed to remove the wheels again and fitted the light last night, a nice 2 minute job :)

Why do you need to take the wheels off to replace the centre caps. :?

Cheers, I wish my day job was a mechanic sometimes, nothing I like to do more!

I can only think the car was reversed into a kerb stone with a bollard or something to break the bracket and a rear bumper. Either way, all sorted and can be enjoyed :)

Thanks! Good to keep these as I can always look back at when I did certain jobs, I would love to do that, the only problem is with the selling part :floor:

I am actually selling my SL which has undergone quite a bit of work if you fancy that :D I'm hoping to replace it with a 928 project 8)

Thanks for the kind words, just something I love to do, if I could turn it into a job that would be a dream but as I say, I find it hard to let go of them

Unless there is a really strong special tool, I tried poking a coat hanger bent to suit and when I pulled, they don't budge, I end up bending the coat hanger straight. So wheels off annoyingly.

Not much to update with at the moment.

Some Renovo turned up, the car flagged up an engine management warning, that turned out to be a P0154 code (o2 Sensor no activity detected bank 2 sensor 1) so I checked the wiring to the o2 sensor, all was fine so I've ordered a new one to see if that sorts it out.

Also got some new coil packs and stainless bolts ordered to replace the rusty originals. I was tempted to get the car serviced by a specialist but I'm thinking there isn't much point and I will just do it all myself.

So oil, oil filter, pollen filter, spark plugs, coilpack and belt. The brake fluid probably hasn't been done in a while so I'll do that as well.

Agreed, good work fella and looks like you've got yourself a bargain there.

Those Boxsters were always fun to drive and at reasonable speeds for today's roads too.

Great tip on the allen key, I'll give that a go tonight!

Thanks guys, do enjoy doing the work and posting it up as a diary.

I took the car for some fuel last night and wanted to check the codes, it seems 2 sensors are triggering them now.

I've got 1 sensor so far so I'll install that and see if that cures one.

A live data capture of them.

Bank 1, sensor 1 is a brand new Porsche sensor which the previous owner had fitted. The rest look original.

I have no idea what these values mean.

Pre cat lambda sensors switch between 0.2 - 0.8 volts so up down up down and so on .

Post cats and about 0.45 static .. rev the car .. a blip and the readings will go high , then low than static again.

Thats a working system.

Pre cat reading 0.4 ish is a flat line .. dead sensor basically.

Modern sensors are wide band so a set voltage 1.5 volts ish flat line , far more accurate where as older systems cant accuratley maintain Lambda (correct air / fuel ratio ) and basically give it too much fuel at which point the sensors say whoooh hold on a bit .. then it goes opposite in which case the sensors say common guv .. give us more fuel .. etc etc and up down .. up down .

Sensor 1 and i would assume pre cat , sensor 2 and post cat .

Heater circuit is the fast warm up for the lambdas Ho2S .. it makes them hot fast ! only used on a cold start but can sometimes trigger an eml .. its save the planet stuff .

Rule of thumb .. change both pre cat OR both post cat as a pair .. so both sides .. if not you can get an eml for ageing faluts .. a new sensor switches faster than an old one .. you replace one side and the other side is then deemed to be too slow and brings on an eml .

Great advice, and info, cheers for that! I'll get to work sorting that out. Finally bought myself a decent sensor socket, I've always used a spanner and end up getting no where, big bar and proper socket should do the trick here I hope.

Thanks!

Small jobs done last night, new centre caps fitted, the allen key trick worked great!

I bought a new mirror for the casing which was already in Meridian Grey, a simple job to swap. Luckily the new mirror came with a heated glass, the glass which was fitted to this was just a cheap non heated replacement piece.

The old casing clearly knocked another car and had a crack in it along with snapped screw mounts

Not now :)

Old and new

Coloured centres :) The one thing my wife wanted on the car.
