Those wheels like the sport one were superseded with part numbers so whether it says 997 or 991 they are the same. the advantage of them is they are a bit thicker and have a slight flat bottom which makes them feel and look more updated. the only thing you need to look out for is the same wheel from Panamera and a couple of other models . it looks the same but the colours are not quite the same so a black might be more charcoal . I did have one like this and it was a few shades lighter than the 997/991 black . I sold it overseas in the end to a guy who was refurbing it anyway so the colour didnt matter..

Thanks guys!

I'm thinking of replacing the fascia with the multi function fascia before I put it on the car. Would mean butchering a nice wheel - worth doing or not your opinion?

I think I'd sell it and buy the one you want.

Sid I have seen it done a few times the facia will pop off if your careful with trim tools its glue to about 5 tabs but does pop of , as always some pop off easier than others . the facias are quite expensive new for the OPC so worth looking for a used one of a MF one on a wrong coloured wheel swap it over then resel the wheel you dont need. :thumb:

Phil - you are a fountain of knowledge. I've acquired the fascia. And you're right it's a different colour. Thinking of having it painted black :)

The problem I have is - will updating my 997.1 Triangle MF wheel to a 991/cayman wheel with MF require a new module and coding? It seems like a lot of hassle.

Sid have you a manual or tip box , if manual its highly likely you wont need the newer steering control module if its a tip then yes you probably will need it . they are £230 from the OPC plus the coding cost.

as your already programmed for MF hopefully this should be a straight swap and no piwis recoding needed. I would try it first before going to the cost of painting etc. if your painting it and want a OE soft touch finish then wicked coatings can do this . Chris (silvermilnec)had his done like that you could pm him for a bit more info etc.

Thanks Phil. It's a manual. Fingers crossed for no module and coding. Thanks for the heads up on wicked coatings.

you need two new springs , the ones in the bottom of the wheel about £1.30 each from OPC and also add some silicon grease to the three tabs on the side of the airbag :thumb: :thumb:

Seems the original springs were good - this was sold as a 'new' wheel but I had some doubts, because ebay.

The silicon grease alone sorted it.

I finally had the car booked to have the wheel coded to MF today but no joy. It seems that the resistance of this airbag is wrong. They will either have to install a resistor pack, bu then there'll be no airbag in an accident (no thanks), or replace the control unit (another £400-500 plus install). I've read plenty about the latter to have the horn/MF work, but not to simply cancel an airbag warning (fault code 8044)

Could it possibly be that I have an airbag (yes, it's off ebay) that fits but is not right? Perhaps one for a Cayenne or Panamerra - I'm clutching at straws I know...

Thats a new one on me mate, all the wheels and airbags should be interchangable between models for that style of wheel.

did they try another airbag in your car just to be sure its not the arbag thats faulty thats needs doing before you do anything else to eliminate a faulty airbag before going for other fixes. :thumb: if it is the airbag faulty you have rights to return it through ebay.

It does seem odd. I've searched the net but all other threads say the same. The only stuff I can find on using a resistance solution is for airbag deletes on sports wheels.

No they didn't try any diagnostic on the airbag. Just gave me those two options. Does anybody know any specialists in the midlands who may have seen a few of these upgrades?

How do you test an airbag (without exploding it :?: )

It would be handy if you could meet up with another member who has the same airbag and try it in your car if it works then the airbags faulty if it doesnt then you have an issue that I have not heard of before , I assume you have removed the airbag checked the wiring contections etc and replaced it to see if that clears the fault.
Hopefully someone from the midlands will be able to suggest a decent indy who knows what to look for .

keep us posted as its interesting to see what it is for future ref.. :thumb:

I think the answer is you can't directly check or test the airbag. Substituting it with a known correct resistance would be the safe method.

Well, I have news, and good news, but I not 100% sure which of the steps I took made it work but I did, approximately:

1) Bought a Carsoft i960 diagnostic
2) Tried said diagnostic and failed (8007 fault wouldn't go)
3) Disconnected battery
4) Removed the round airbag
5) Connected up the triangle airbag (with Gen2 wheel still in place)
6) Drove down the drive to clear the PSM (with i960 attached) - yes this was tricky without the airbag housed in the wheel
7) Airbag light went off (hmmm, ok)
8) Put the round airbag back in (this time not connecting the battery in between airbags)
9) Still no airbag light
10) Go for a spin, no recurrence

So, now I need to get horn coded and I of course don't want to take it to Autofarm this time - any suggestions of known places who will know how to code it to MF near Oxford?
