Hi All,
Somehow I went from ignoring the Cayenne, to really, really wanting one; especially when I realised I no longer wanted a wobbly L322 Range Rover, but I really only like them with the exterior goodies (roof rails, bodykit, etc) and not a black interior.
I had my heart set on a Turbo S, but viewed a 2004 Black on black turbo with 560 bhp and only 70k on the clock. It didn't turn over for 20 minutes and had an odd clacking noise on one side of the engine, which was off putting. When being driven I had to put it in comfort to quieten all the rattles and make the ride a little comfier. The owner took it up to high speed and asked me what I thought. Tbh it left me cold, and it took me several seconds to come up with a lame 'its a nice car'. I said I'd only be interested in buying it when I got a second opinion on the engine, but luckily he sold it that day.
Weeks later I viewed a 2006 Turbo S with 120k on it with full history. It started from cold without any rattles, I was so happy. Despite the miles on it, it was more comfortable even in normal with hardly any squeaks and rattles. Again I was in the passenger seat but could feel no strange clonks, or vibrations. On the downside the coolant was slightly low and the seller had no idea if the coolant pipes were replaced, but assumed not. The PCM had been replaced with a Sony headunit, so the steering wheel buttons don't work.
I wanted this one as I loved the colour (marine blue metallic), the sand beige interior , sunroof and it was in budget.
Cosmetically it has issues due to the mileage; and salt!, including some slight bubbling on the front wing and plenty of stone chips, and a scratch on the tailgate (which doesn't stay up) but certainly nothing that can't be sorted.
I had it delivered today
Firstly I do find it a handsome beast! Better looking than a Touareg that's for sure. OTOH I kinda like ugly cars, as my previous car was a 2004 BMW 760Li , and before that a 2006 Jeep Commander CRD (with GDE HOT tune), and even a bug-eyed-wildebeast Ford Scorpio back in the day. Much like my 760 I didnt like the facelift version, and I feel the same with the Cayenne.
Now I don't find the performance that amazing (perhaps its the mileage etc), but primarily I think its like my 760; very refined; but noisier engine. I think I expected it to be a lot rawer somehow. OTOH a 760 is low 5's to 60 as well, so its comparable performance wise.
Nearly lost a sill jacking cover as it had a lot of mud weighing it down, so cleaned them all, and gave it a quick wash and polish to find the defects. Years of road debris has scoured the underneath of the sills back to white plastic.
Garage was so tight it didn't even have any screen wash in it. I've topped that and the coolant up and will keep an eye on it. The engine oil was at max. I've taken the beauty covers off, but cannot find an angle to video to see if I have the plastic pipes.
Anyway thats me for now, many questions coming....
