Its exactly the same for ANY 15+ year old car. I don't know why people are so surprised that Porsche is any different.

Theres a reason why you don't see very many cars on the road that are over 15 years, its because the labour to fix them is more than they are worth.

People go misty eyed over their Porsche and shell out for it (me included). Of course it helps that its worth more than £1k.
 
The way we treat are Turbo is that we roughly take on one 'big job' each year alongside its annual service. A couple of years ago we overhauled the brake pipes followed by the suspension and then last year we had the Turbos refurbished along with all the exhaust brackets etc which shed a couple of grand very easy but it was worth doing - I was always very conscious of being faced with a list like the above - all you can do is work through it. The good thing about these car rising in value is that we all free a little more comfortable about investing in them - it's easier to spend £2K on a £35-40K car than a £25K one if that makes sense - it was the man maths I used anyway.

As others have said there is most definitely a premium to the up keep of a Turbo over and above a normally aspirated car.

Same here, we're going out on Friday the 18th with Longers (Fasttrack Tours) staying at Hotel Verviers.

I think this is a very sensible approach.
This year I'm doing the Turbos, brake lines and leaks.
Suspension next time.

Upgrading or refurbing?

New units are ~£3k each from memory, pretty sure you can get a refurb for 10-20% of that cost.

As others have said, in one go all that would be a very costly job, but spread out over a couple of years it's not so bad.
 
The problem with the Turbos is corrosion of the body apparently.
The near side one has a hole in and the offside is not far behind and needs a new actuator very soon.

An upgrade is tempting but I'm a bit stretched with other things at the mo so I'll be going with a pair of refurbed std turbos.
I did the rads & condensers last year so maybe after I've done the suspension and the callipers, which are next, i'll give 9E a call and see what we can do.
 
I'd be going for refurb as/when mine decide to die.

I changed the air-con rads 2 years ago, new pair for £99. At that price I consider them consumable.

The list of maintenance items above seems pretty standard.

I have just refurbished my turbos due to corrosion and low boost.

This was based on recommendations from a few of the big names in 996 Turbos. Despite sending them off before the big snow they still got turned around in a week and arrived back in Scotland before I did having been stranded in London. Cost was about £1400 for both incl. VAT. They basically replaced everything apart from the aluminium housing...

Given this I can't see the sense in buying new ones at double the cost.

Although a friend found an interesting set of K24s on ebay which look like a cheap but potentially risky option...

I think those turbos have been discussed on here before.

£900 for a pair really is too good to be true.

Chocolate impellors springs to mind. :?:
 
That does seem cheap, I replaced one of mine with a return for about 850 or so (just the turbo cost).
 
I think the assembling is fairly straightforward. It's the balancing that's tricky.
 
Get under there yourself and look at the brackets, supports etc. I've been powder coating a few of mine and replaced non structural bolts with stainless.

The whole rear bracketry for the intercoolers needed doing on mine and I feel better for doing it. It's a nice ongoing project and its pretty cheap when you find a good local bloke to do it. I'm on first name terms with my local guy
