Wanted: 997 GT2 Manual Gearbox

I know they're likely to be rarer than long armed Scots man with money in his pocket, but I thought I'd chance my arm with a post.

No bother, I'll just fork out for a new one when the I get the Insurance money for the wife.

I am having my 996 turbo box modified to add the external pump and spray bar, as well as strengthened internals, 2 piece mainshaft and straight cut gears. It will still have the power take-off to the front which won't be needed as I will be running RWD but the extra strength will be there.

I don't know if it is of any use or not but I have a standard 996 turbo gearbox in perfect condition off a 35k mile car.

I dont know the differences between a GT2 box and a 99X Turbo box. But if the OP has a GT2, it is going to be better to have his box rebuilt. He might like to give Mike a call at Sports & Classic - he's the only guy I can think of that might know the differences and if a 99X box will work / can be made to work instead of a GT2 box.

I called Mike. After the initial, "you're in the right place" he followed up with a request for my VIN. Then nothing, not a sausage. No replies to further mails!

For info it's a big hp 996 turbo build.

Upgrades on 997 GT2 box are, afaik:

Bigger input shaft
Steel gears
Oil cooler and spray bar
Diff

Basically, all I'll need for 1000hp.

Offset against the sale cost of my standard 996t box, its a good solution.

So it for a 996 big HP build, ahhhhhh this i know well !!!

You dont need a GT2 box end of

Bill Raider build, GT2 slave the usual stronger bits and chose your ratios

You will need to disconnect your front diff
Depending on boost levels and agression, you will need to change drive shafts
And some other bits

So what are the usual stronger bits?

Would it be per chance a 997 GT2 input shaft and 1-3 gears, LSD and spray bar...

I believe it's RADER for the bloke over the pond

Have you spoken to Matt at Fearnsport or the lads at ES Motor, they would be my first ports of call for someone who might know of such a piece of hardware lying under a bench?

Speak to Ken or Adam at 9e

I have a gearbox from them for my car. 1000 bhp etc. No complaints what so ever .... it runs perfect and 100% drivability

Yes over the pond!

Yes stronger shafts. Straight cut gears for 3 4 5 etc (no 100% hard launches as you will break stuff.....you don't need t with this kind nd of power level). Custom clutch. Guards LSD etc. But as for the finer details you will have to call them "” 9e

For 1000 bhp you will need the LSD end of.

I'm not keen on straight cut, I've got straight cut in my Westfield and I don't mind the noise in that because of what it is. The Porsche is a road car.

1000 bhp and the way it will lay down or the determined boost levels on the way the power is delivered may determine the gearbox requirements implemented ?

It depends on your route, but there aint no cheap method - ask me how i know LOL !

I have straight cut in 3, 4 and 5th gears with associated boost by RPM, after all i want to keep traction at its optimal level....well i try to LOL

BTW - I love the noise - each to their own! a real sense of occasion and that is what i want from my car along with its other mods. Its (the whine) not that bad with all the interior insulation TBH. I dont have any other toys except my wifes 0.9l Renault Clio, oh but its so easy to drive?

If you don't want straight cut then I suggest you set up the car to keep the torque down. From my research if you are going to put a lot of torque through the 'box you will need straight cut gears to reduce the side loads. Guard appear to be pretty much the only game in town when it comes to great gear sets.
There are a few specialists who will be able to advise on this, most have been mentioned in this thread. I wouldn't risk not going straight cut myself. I would hate to spend many thousands on the work, go against the recommendations of the engine builder, then have a gearbox failure. It is simply not worth the risk. Stick to 700hp or below and the standard gearbox should be fine.

Wise words from MC

Std healthy gearbox will run circa 700bhp all day long

I've got the syvecs, so I can limit torque no problem, was looking at around 800ft/lbs and let it run out, probably see 900+ hp, turbos are new A3076.

Engine is 4.0, so will have plenty of torque.

Looking at options, if I have to go straight cut I might, but I don't think the 997 GT2 is straight cut, and I'm told that will handle my power level.

Yes, I think the guards is a must, but I'm thinking ATB instead of clutch packs, as I want this to be a nice drive as opposed to all out power. It won't be tracked, but if I put my foot in I don't want to worry, so I want that reliability, hence building in a bit of headroom.

Sounds like a great build!

What's the lag like on those blowers, and what kind of boost are you looking to run?

:thumb:

On a 4.0 they should be pretty well matched, I dont want lag for a road car, they must be driveable from low down. I like usable torque. They're the xona wheel ones so hopefully plenty of spool.

Not sure on boost, will see when we map.
