1st Porsche

thans dermot,

the tester, is that a voltage pen your referring to?

also, how would I know if the fuse is faulty at the back of the pcm?

sorry if these are silly questions, I'm not technical savvy in the slightest

No worrys ..

A tester is a laptop .. we can see the values / codes for all control units on a car with these ..

For a PCM / Radio i can see the codeing and alter it .. ie i can set it to USA and not europe , i can see any fault codes , so it might actually say Control unit faulty , it might say incorrect codeing etc etc .

I can do things like a hard reset , we call it a vehicle handover .. basically its a transport mode which somethimes things drop into and need " wakeing up " as it were ... think of turning off your computer and back on when it locks up ( blue screen of death ! )

To check the fuse in the pcm you would need to remove the pcm .. then pull the fuse and look at it .

If the Pcm / radio actually works with your reset (pressing the buttons ) then the unit has power and an earth so its not going to be a blown fuse im afraid .

Power / earth .. thats a battery connection and what anything needs to work electrically .

cheers mate,

i see now, your talking about one of those snap-on type computers I presume.

I will check the fuses anyhow at the right hand side of dash.

Seems it could be a battery issue perhaps? my voltage is coming up about 13-14 on the voltmetre on dash and it was only a new lion battery installed in November by the specialist dealer

but I shall check the fuses 1st, then maybe go to pcm unit fuse.

well .. close :)

I use a Piwis .. Porsche laptop to interogate the systems .. rather expensive , its what the OPC,s use .. (Officiall Porsche Centers ) .

13-14 volts charge rate is normal .. they can charge upto 16 volts when needed .

Check the fuses .. then perhaps research places that can refurb the PCM .

yes, np

thanks for all the info dermot

would you happen to know anywhere from experience that refurb pcm units?

i see andriod aftermarket units on ebay, have you ever seen one of these installed? i think they would flag electrical errors with car itself as porsche computer won't recognise it?

Im afraid i dont know of any that i can recomend , the parts guys at work deal with that sort of thing .

Ive seen many non standard radios in Cayennes along with other Porsches , i would start a new post on that for answers as to the best type .

just an update on my cayenne, I've recently got a new speed sensor and bearing replaced on front left wheel. Including vat £576 in total.

A pirelli p zero rosso tyre front left - £150 :)

and alot of fuel haha

other than that everything else touch wood is good, but it's due in for it's 80,000 mile major service next month which will cost another £550 :)

my pcm still works when it wants , it can go 2 weeks without working and then works on any random morning.

i love the sound of the v6 in high 3k revs in 3rd and 4th gear :)
