Reliable V8 estate - what should I buy?

Ok, the Volvo is sold (pending exchange of V5/funds), and I'm intending on buying a C55 AMG estate on Wednesday.

However:

I know it's impossible to say truly how bad this is without stripping the area down, but has anyone had one of these and can comment on bad it's likely to be?

The car is a 2007, my (Internet sourced, so suspect) information is that Merc had got on top of their rust problem by circa 2004, so I'm hopeful - but should I run a mile?

E55? Many more saloons than wagons. But will do starship miles.

Keep the Volvo!!

Way cooler than a noughties Merc. I bet you'll spend more bringing that merc upto scratch than you will keeping the Volvo nice, as you've already got the Volvo all done.

I like some Mercs but that one is a bit non-descript. I'd be wanting older or newer.

That's just me though. I'd stretch the budget and get an 05-07 RS4 Avant.
I may have written that earlier. :thumb:

Don't Mercs have a very long (30 years) guarantee on paintwork so long as it's the original? I also thought they'd got over their rusty spots problem, which would suggest that those wheel arches have probably been resprayed and the job not up to scratch.

I do love the Volvo, but I'm spending (no hyperbole here) £5,000/year on it keeping it fully operational.

In the past month I've changed crank, cam sensors, the entire engine wiring loom, and the power supply to the injectors.

I'd hope that the C55, being lower mileage, and ten years younger, could provide trouble free motoring for 1-2 years before being chopped in for something else.

RS4 - I want an auto in this one because I'm old. I have been looking at S6's though.

There's a lot of conflicting information out there, I am finding.

Post 2004 (which this car is) they're meant to be galvanised, and the rust problems solved - my photographs don't agree with that.

I think you are spot on with your assessment that this has been repaired poorly in the past, and what we are seeing is rust coming back through the areas repaired. I'm hoping that the bodyshop that is just finishing my 911 can solve it properly - not just a sand-back and blow-over but properly grinding it back, treatment and then decent paint.

What I'm scared of is getting the wheel arch liner out, sill cover off, and then discovering that is a rot-fest inside. But - galvanised. Could the old repairs have been done to tidy up stone chips, but they sanded through the galvanising?

Probably. I'd guess that the body work is mint behind the liners as thwy don't suffer the weather like external parts do.

I had an e55 which was an awesome car. I appreciate that the c55 is a different non-blower engine but what I really loved about the e55, was that so many of the parts were the same as on a normal e class and hence no silly mark up because it was an AMG car. Mine was a 2005 car and the bodywork was rust free and I had no issues at all on that front.

I think you have made a great choice in car. One thing that was also cool about the E55 was the servicing at Mercedes was really very reasonable as well (I think they do a good deal on cars over 10 years old) and it was as cheap for servicing at mercs than specialists around my area.

Lets face it 367bhp and 0-60 in 5.4 seconds its a great sleeper car and one that people actually let you out of junctions with!

That's raw edge corrosion which if the car has a full MBSH should be covered under the corrosion warranty. It is not structural and will be easily remedied.

Those are the paddles I have fitted to my 996!
