Move to Millers after engine rebuild?

my 997 3.6 is due an annual service shortly. It has been approx 18 months since an engine rebuild (6 new liners etc etc). The rebuild was not done by Hartech and Hartech liners were not used.

The car runs great, although oil pressure at full temperature remains a little low (just over 1 rather than 1.25-1.5). This has been thoroughly investigated (including changing out pretty much all of the oil cooling and pump system).

The car is running the recommended Mobil 1 oil at the moment and doesn't burn a huge amount (less than 1.5 litre over 7k miles).

The question is, should i move over to the slightly higher weight Millers oil as suggested by some on here?

I'm planning a couple of Euro trips down to Italy this year and my worry is getting caught in traffic in high ambient temperatures.

As I had been running my gen1 on millers nano 10w50 as a preventative measure not due to rebuild I wanted to know what I should run my new gen2 on so phoned Hartech and spoke to them . now they had to be vague to cover themselves as it was not their car so they said to me " If it was our car and with our cars we would be running it on millers nano " that was all I needed to know and got it swapped to Millers before collecting the car .
Oil is quite a personal thing and there are always lots of opinions if the car is under warranty then clearly you need to check before changing oil brands etc.
then after that its do as your doing and ask opinions then do what you think suits you. :thumb: :thumb:
 
Definitely Millers, mind you- get some more for adds up, other way you may wake up like me- in the middle of Germany with no oil to add!!!

People say you can mix synthetics, I didn't have choice and I add different brand to Millers, I manage to get back from Europe but on M 25 car start to smoke as hell, turns up that oils separator was faulty.
I'm not sure that was because mixing or not but Millers is harder to get so is good to be prepared and order some more.
 
yacht broker - I would definitely go for a slightly heavier oil if you are driving to Italy especially if you will be driving in the mountains/high altitude which can dramatically reduce oil pressure and increase oil temp. At the top of the Stelvio pass last year my oil temp went up to 120c and oil pressure dropped to 1.1bar at idle (this was running 10w50 Millers NT+), it's normally around 90C and 2.9 bar at idle. If I do another Alpine road trip in summer I may even switch to a 10w60 for the trip, (as we had outside temps of 39C in France and as said the high mountain passes greatly affect oil pressure).

If I were you I'd probably try Millers Nano NT+ 10w50 or Mobil 1 5w50 (which is a Porsche approved A40 spec oil). Both will bring your oil pressure up at idle and prevent it getting too low in hot climates/high altitude.
 
yacht broker I'm running Millers after my Hartech engine build and I've used the car in high ambient summer temps 40c, oil pressure is high, cool engine temps and burns minimal oil.
But as said it is a very personal choice.
 
Can any chemists on here give a view on whats particularly good about Millers, compared to Mobil 1, Castrol Edge etc?
 
I can only speak from experience so, when I bought my C2S in February 2014, I researched on here and found out about the low temp thermostat mod.

Found the specialist I currently use and booked it in around the end of May for the work to be done.

I also wanted an oil and filter change, and my specialist recommended millers 10w50 nano so, I agreed and the work was done.

Now between me buying the car and getting the oil changed was about 3 months and around 1500 miles with Mobil 1 in the engine.

It used nearly a litre of oil in that time and always had a burning smell after a good run :grin:

After the millers was put in, I've used 750ml in 12,000 miles ( nearly 4 yrs) in all that time . Little top ups in between services and no burning smell at all.

The oil pressure is higher also, around 2.5 bar with oil temp @90 and 2 bar with oil temp @100 degrees.

It's a triple ester oil with some magic beans added I think but, I hope this helps :thumb:

ESMotor recommend that all their cars run Millers Nano, that alone was good enough for me and with Hartech as well saying the same it's a no brainer really.

I'd love to see a comparison between them as I'm pretty sure both Mobil 1 and Castrol Edge will work just as well? What I'd like to know is both Mobil1 and Castrol Edge mention engine cleaning/reducing deposits, whereas Millers does not mention this at all?? Does Millers Nano have the same cleaning benefits? I can understand the benefits of Millers being triple ester as a motorsport oil for cars running high temps and revs. However all the 911's I have read about with intergalactic mileage have run on Mobil1?? :?:

I had never seen that comparative test between reg oil and millers very very impressive results hadnt realised Millers gave bhp gains over other oils as well as the other wins.

How's it work?
According to the scientific type-bods this new range uses 'spherical nanoparticle structures' in the oil formulation. These act to fill the rougher surfaces of metallic components by forming what they call a 'tribofilm' this makes the surfaces ultra smooth. It's this smoothness that reduces friction and gives the oil its performance characteristics.
 
Doesnt castrol edge have the teeny tiny magical particles also?
 
I've just done mine today with Millers, got 10 ltrs for under a £100 locally in fact it was cheaper per litre than Opie oils.

Yeah I've seen this too, Opie is only cheaper when used in conjunction with one of their offers - typically 15-20% off
