Mercedes, BMW, Audi, Porsche Workers Strike For The Third Day

Workers at Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, Audi, and BMW factories in Germany held 24-hour strikes for the third time on Friday.

These strikes, triggered by the powerful IG Metall labor union, were held as a warning shot before a decision is made whether to instigate extended industrial action. If this decision is made, it could cost the German automakers hundreds of millions of euros in lost production, Automotive News reports.

On the back of the strikes, the union and the employers said they are open to resuming talks this week, but both insist that the other side must make concessions.

IG Metall is demanding an 8 per cent pay rise over 27 months for its 3.9 million members in the metals and engineering sector. Additionally, the union wants workers to have the option of reducing their weekly hours to 28 from 35 to care for children, elderly or sick relatives. After two years of reduced hours, they could return to full time work.

Employers in the metals and engineering sector have offered a 6.8 per cent wage increase but shot down the idea of reduced hours, unless they are able to also increase hours when necessary.

'Now it is up to the employers to understand the signal we are sending and make a significant improvement to their offer. If the employers are willing to do that, talks can resume on Monday," IG Metall chief Joerg Hofmann said.

Following in the footsteps of their 1970's British Leyland colleagues.

I have no idea if the warehouse staff are also involved but if so then anyone waiting on a part from germany will be waiting longer .. it doesnt take much for them to back order parts and things like this are a pain and not only for customers .

Btw i wouldn,t mind an 8 % pay rise ..

Sadly the German government is socialist so they are unlikey to crush the unions like we sensibly did in the 80s, the days of Workers being taken advantage of by employers are long gone and so should the dinosaur unions with their unhealthy and unrealistic demands. :nooo:

On a positive note that will make german goods more expensive which in turn will be good for UK manufactures and our ecconamy as we exit , maybe the German Unions are in favour of helping bring down the EU
:dont know: :?:

All these strikes must explain the shortage of GT3 cars coming to the UK.

:floor: maybe we could negotiate that they only strike when making left hookers

In general, in the modern world every strike in the manufacturing sector either strengthens the case for investment in increased automation or pushes manufacturers towards wholesale relocation of production. And once jobs are gone, they don't tend ever to come back in the form that they left. Asking for 8% in the current climate (even in Germany) is fantasy land if they really all still want to have jobs in 10 years time I reckon. :nooo:

Build a Porsche factory in the UK. There's a good site in Coventry.
