Temp gauge gone crazy. Help.

Took the car for its second drive yesterday to Tewkesbury Porsche, and when I got back in to come home and turned the ignition on it went crazy, straights into red then back halfway then off the scale.

During driving back, it moved from just off the red zone (it didn't have the light on as off the dial) and kept going so it made it as far as the top of the fuel gauge!

It's as if a small fairy got in and moved the dial...

Any clues? What to check first and easy fix?

Joys of 20yr old car ownership....!

Have you checked your water level?

This is a shot with ignition on, not running, after car has been driven about 15 miles and was warm before setting off

Yes, it's all fine, no leaks or anything. The gauge is still sat at 110 now with ignition off and been sat since yesterday

Being an earlier car you should be able to get the exact engine coolant reading from the a/c controls' hack'which would tell you if you have a duff sender or the gauge is duff. I'm assuming it's a duff sensor

How do I do that?

Ps I haven't worked on a car for 25 years!

It's a doddle. Just follow this guide here:

Thanks! I did a search but couldn't find anything so did google and found another link and yes, it's a doddle :)

Gauge seems to have reset this morning, but now I notice I have water coming into the passenger footwell....it sounded like water being pumped around (maybe air con pipes?) and when I turned ac on it came out faster. Wondering if connected. Also sounded like te front francs were on just after cold start?

The fans come on if the aircon is on. Is you water level dropping in the expansion tank? You won't have any liquid pumping into the car from the aircon. Sounds like you have a leak in you coolant sytem somewhere.

oh dear, that sounds not so good: i really would not drive it if its leaking coolant- i would get it recovered to a OPC/porsche specialist and let them sort it out, water pump could have failed is another possibility if the temp readings are true and no loss of coolant. you said you just got it back from the garage? what had they been doing for you?

What's the likely suspect for the water ingress? Car is outside but not under a cover as it was dirty and wet when I got home yesterday and don't like putting cover on until clean and dry

You 1st need to find out if the water in the car is coming from your coolant system. Has the level dropped in your expansion tank. If it's not dropping, then it's not coming from there.

You can get water ingress if the drain holes are blocked, take the covers off either side of the battery and check, they get blocked with leaves and guff.
Check if the water is actually water or you are getting a coolant leak, get some of the water or damp patch on your finger and lick it. If it's coolant vs rainwater you will know pretty quickly.

Looks to me like the temp gauge has packed up.

The gauge shouldnt read anything with the ignition key off or removed as there is no power going to the gauge .

Strange to have another seemingly seperate fault ..

Check the a/c drain in the passengers footwell.

Turn on a/c and feel the water running down .. it should be cold and clear if its a/c water draining .

Thanks, when it light and stops raining I'll have a look at if it's blocked.
