As Title states, I'm preferably after a pair of X50 turbos, if anyone happens to have any, or can recommend where i can some from?

Thanks

You can get them refurbished. I would suspect around £800 a pair. You could also look at getting them converted to K24/26 hybrids but that would cost more and require a remap + injectors to get the most out of them. Will make the car very fast though :D

Thanks for the responses.

1 Want 1 x pair

I have a slow oil drip from the drivers side turbo and thought it would make sense to change them both, price/ availability dependant.

I did consider having them refurbished, but my independent advised me against it.

Not interested in modifying, its quick enough as an X50 and i like my cars original.

Has anyone else had their turbo's refurbed? Can anyone reccomend somewhere reputable that can do it?

The nuts and bolts holding them on seem heavily corroded, so I'm not looking forward the the process of removing them. I'm told it could become an engine out job if the oil feed pipe needs to be replaced.

If it were me I'd certainly get them refurbished, they're not rocket science and are rebuildable (unless something's let-go internally, like the compressor wheel, and damaged the housing, then it's prob not economical)

Geoff Kershaw and his gang at Turbo Technics would probably be first on my (UK) call list, but have a look on some of the Jap tuning forums, those boys are constantly tinkering with their turbos....

Alternatively, if you want to speak to one of the VERY clever chaps, give my pal Chris Carroll a call at TurboKraft in Arizona. He's the man.

I would suggest you find another independent because that is shocking advice you are getting not to have them refurbed. Properly refurbed they should be as new.

Ken

I am glad you said that Ken as while I was reading down the thread I was thinking why on earth would the OP have been told not to refurb them , whether he was modifying them or keeping them stock its the normal thing to do :thumb:

Yup, likewise, was thinking the same about getting another outfit to undertake the work; that's just bloody blatent "chancing" (for once I was trying to be vaguely diplomatic!)

ETA: Turbo Dynamics was the other outfit who's name escaped me earlier...a Google search brings up a few others, more research needed.

The only credible reason that your Indy may have been thinking was they THEY didn't want to rebuild them, and that *could* be with good reason, insomuch that if there's a fair bit that needs to be replaced internally, then the unit does need to be accurately re-balanced - not a job for the home enthusiast. But even so, it wouldn't stop them farming the job out to Turbo Technics, Turbo Dynamics, A N Other...laziness...taking you for a mug...don't let 'em

Ken

That was my first thought too.

Wow thanks for the comments guys.

My independent was telling me the turbo was corroded hence the leak, but when I pressed him exactly where the leak was coming from he was just saying "the turbo".

I've taken a look and its really hard to see exactly where its coming from. It's running down the side of the turbo and dripping off the little square oil housing directly beneath.

I was hoping they could be refurnished.

Question is, Is removing the turbo to get it re-furbed something i can do myself? I'm a little worried about this oil feed pipe and the likely situation of corroded nuts & bolts.

Thanks for your help so far guys, its good to get some experienced advise of people who aren't trying to sell you something...

I would be calling Ken at 9E on Monday and having a good chat with him about your options re DIY removal or getting them to do the whole job :thumb:

Thought Id post a couple of pictures showing the leak...

Its very hard to tell where that is leaking from. Common leaks from above the turbo are from the union between the afferent oil line which goes to the top of the turbo. Other leaks can come from the middle of the blower. Then they can leak from between the turbo and the oil sump, finally from the efferent oil line from the sump.

It looks like its leaking quite a bit. If its from where the oil line is above the turbo then it may be a relatively simple fix and have absolutely nothing to do with refurbing the blower at all.

Was this a Porsche specialist?

You need to get a better look above the blower :thumb:

I agree with others a refurb is usually the best way. Unless the body is damaged beyond repair, which is highly unlikely. Removing them in any case is not a fun job. All the bolts WILL be corroded. Odds are both oil feeds will need replacing. This is not an engine out, well I did mine easy enough with the engine in :?:

Good advice there. I'd say clean it up, then run the car up to temperature on axle stands to see if you can pin point exactly where the oil is coming from.
