E46 M3 yes or no ?

When I got my 996 these were at parity on price for similar condition cars being at the bottom of their depreciation curves. I think the 996 has gained value faster in the last few years but both are on the up meaning it could be free motoring (man maths).

I went with a 996 in the end as they edge it in the handling stakes, probably due to being a purpose built sports car rather than an adapted saloon.

However this engine is on my list to own as one of the greatest NA of all time.

Baby has arrived so logic dictates an E46 M3 would be the sensible choice but I just can't let go of the 996, every time I drive it (twice a day, I commute 20 miles each way in it on traffic free country roads) just leaves me with a big grin.

I'm a big fan, great cars, drive nice, fun and damn handsome - nothing out there better for the money, but not for much longer so get in quick !!

Quick update

Drove the m3 this week and was very surprised . Nice tight car , no rattles knocks etc revs well

Could do with a little cosmetic tlc ( no
Probs with that)

Deal done

Hi. I have an 03 330ci manual convertible in silver grey and 86k. Needs some bodywork as rust on one front wing and a few car park marks. Daily driver and I love it. Fits like a glove and although not M3 grunt it doesnt hang around.

I know its not worth that much but should I spend the money on bringing it back to tip top. Reckon it needs 1500 to 2k spent? I have this thought that a few larger engine BMWs become quite sought after or is that wishful thinking!!

The boot floor (more accurately diff mount cracking putting extra strain on the boot welds) is easy to spot it you know what you looking for. So long as its not a worst cast failure its a £400 welding job to fix. BMW used to rectify under warranty (but without paperwork so they never admitted the problem) when the bill would be £2k plus as they would fit a new floor and revised diff bracket so internet rumours have it at a £2k repair when in the real world its not (I had 2 done under warranty by BMW and have seen many much cheaper welded repairs which have held up over time).

The sheels where again a warranty recall item on the M3 (but not on the bread van or roadster which had a lowered red line of 7.4k revs so BMW argued they did not need the upgrade  ). You can still buy the kits if not done on warranty (BMW can tell you if it was done) but if they have not failed after 120k ...........

Traction (or lack of) is the fun part compared to todays over assisted 'drivers" cars where in effect you can never fully turn off the electronic assistance systems :thumb:

Rear wheel drive, old tech traction (none in the S50 roadsters and bread vans) and one of the best NA engines ever made, what's not to like :dont know:

I have a 330i M Touring in Imola red with 19" CSL wheels, looks epic and I love it to bits, munches motorways and will pick it's heels up when over 3k.
Silky smooth engine, I might be getting an individual 7 series E38 740i as a project shortly, might be a freebie

I had a carbon black one for a couple of years before my 996. I had it inspected by a BMW garage before buying it and they found the start of the rear axle mounts cracking. At the time there was a guy called Mat @ Mprove/Off Your Marks in Manchester who specialised in repairing them depending how bad they had got. Anyway, I sent him the pics and as a result still bought the car with a £1800 discount. I had it repaired with all new mount rubbers etc. My thoughts were that it would be sorted and nothing to worry about going forwards. Mine was the smg which I know a few had trouble with the hydraulic pump failing, but few and far between. I loved the car and the engine was wonderful. Don't worry about not having satnav, mine had it but it was very clunky and very dated.
M3cutters is an excellent forum.

I like them also after driving one a few month back, actually toying with the idea of selling my 996 to buy an M3

The SL is a bit OT, but which one do you mean?

M3 has now arrived

I have been driving round in it now and again.

Wow these things are great, they pull like a train, Rev like a vtec

Brake well and handle well. Very surprised

They feel very old school in the way the steering feeds back , but they also lose traction pretty easy

Excellent :)

:useless:

Congratulations. Any pictures? It would be rude not to.

Many uprated the single pot BMW brakes to six pots - AP Racing, Stop Tech et cetera
