235s on front of 996

got an early 3.4 currently on 17s which am moving on

going to 18s do I run 225 or 235 on the front? will run 265 on rear.

concern is whether 235 will rub.

wheels will prob be 7.5 and 9j width

wheels will prob be turbo twists with ET 50 fr and 52 rr

also can you run larger 10 rims too on an ET of 65 on the rear? or is that more for wide body like the turbo or c4s?

thanks

Hi NLW,

The approved tyre size is 225/40/18 for the fronts.

The 996.1 Carrera rears are 265/35/18.
The 996.2 and mk1 GT3 rears are 285/30/18.

I currently have the 18" twists with 10"/265 rears but they look a bit stretched so I have 285/30s to go on the GT3 rims I have for next year.
They look a lot better.

All 996 Carrera rear 18s are 10 inch wide. 9 inch are for Boxsters. Carrera fronts are 7.5 inch but the GT3 8 inch fronts go on no problem.

I think the 996.2 has 8 inch wide fronts with 18s. You are right in that they had the same tyre size.

You have the offsets the wrong way round. The smaller the ET number, the more the wheels 'stick out'. The 65 et are narrow body wheels (mine are 63 I think). The wide body 996 have Et of around 48 or 50.
I have a 10.5 inch wide 18 rear rim on my narrow body 996 without any fitment issues, has an ET of 60.

Hi JK,
Yes you're correct. I'd slipped into thinking of mk1s again for the last bit I wrote. :thumb:

thanks JK. have a few options of wheels ranging from 55 to 63 off set for the rear and you are right about the numbers

I had an e30 that would run et15 on front and et0 on the wheels.

I have a 996.1 3.4 with Goodyear Eagle F1 Assymetric 235 section tyres on the front.
They do rub on the arch liner at full lock, but only just. I have M030 suspension which obviously makes things a bit lower.

If you're prepared to make some adjustments to how the arch liners are fixed then you could probably resolve the rubbing. I'm very glad I have the 235 sections tyres on the front, because that, and scrupulous attention to alignment has dialled out most of the understeer.

I was looking to put 235s on the front of my C4S to helo dial out some understeer, but am worried that the larger diameter might screw up the 4wd system. 225/40/18 are only 0.47% different than the rear 295/30/18s but 235/40/18s would be 1.2% out and I wonder if this might cause the viscous coupling to heat up and engage all of the time.

You should be fine. I believe any difference less than about 2.5% is acceptable. However, I would also consider going for a 285 rear, or trying a softer front anti-roll bar, or a stiffer rear one.

Not quite - the 996.1 GT3 has 8 and the 996.2 GT3 has 8.5. You really ought to have at least the 8 if going to 235s.

correct colin. I have 8.5 j on the front of the read baron. 11j rear.

I was referring to Carreras not GT3s.
This is all getting confusing now. I understand that for 18 inch rims the 996.1 Carrera had 7.5 inch fronts whilst the 996.2 Carreras had 8 inch fronts, with the GT3 being half an inch wider than their Carrera contemporaries.
