Clutch Replacement - What Else While I'm At It?

911munky - sorry, I missed your post.

My car has covered 75k miles but the engine has done 10k less (due to earlier IMS bearing failure), so 65k.

At 100k I'd guess your car will be ready for most of the things discussed here if you want to go the whole hog. You could leave the AOS if no symptoms. My car doesn't smoke but the labour involved to do it later is quite a bit compared to doing it when box is out.

You may be lucky with the brake pipes over the box but I doubt it. Most cars are ready for them now and again it's so easy to do them with the box out.

I'm basically doing everything preventative you can that doesn't involve opening the engine.
Expensive but hopefully I'll have a couple of years of only minor servicing after this. :thumb:

Yes - I think it's there or there abouts. Carparts4less were still doing the WEEKEND14 14% discount so that helped. Then a phone call asking for a price match on both the clutch kit and flywheel against some ebay traders.

Looking at this now as well and cheapest I could get it around £650 for clutch and flywheel but I'll wait for one of these daft big % off things that Eurocarparts do although Im pretty sure they just hike the price or use some other means that is not as big a discount as you think.

Did they provide the flywheel bolts as well or does that come with the clutch kit?

Take a look at carparts4less.co.uk. They are still accepting WEEKEND14 so 14% off. Even without haggling, the order is coming in at ~£585.

Flywheel bolts are additional. You need 8 @ £1 each. My trusty mechanic said he could possibly make-do with the old ones but at that price its no need.
 
I wouldn't gamble on flywheel bolts. They're pretty cheap and meant to be changed every time they're removed.
 
With the gearbox off, 10 mins?
 
Not so sure it's that quick Mike, but I'm no expert.

I'm sure my Indy says he locks the timing gear and removes the chain tensioners before he even removes the IMS cover.

So even with the box out you still have that to do before getting into the bearing to flip the seal.
Not sure how much the above adds on though. I'll ask my Indy out of interest.
 
its certainly not for everyone but i am still loving the lightweight flywheel i've had fitted on mine if your replacing the flywheel anyway and an extra bit of va va voom interests you :grin:
 
Hope to be tackling this next week.

Carparts4Less appear to be relocating warehouses and hence much nonsense with the order. Clutch, flywheel and RMS no problem, but the 8 flywheel bolts were delivered as 6 clutch bolts. Then 2 flywheel bolts. Then another 8 flywheel bolts. All in all, 4 DHL deliveries. Hey ho. Can't fault the customer service though - very good.
 
Why do you have to lock the timing gear if you want to take the seal off the ims?
If your doing this with the bearing still in place why do you have to lock the gears?
 
Have another look at how it all works before you proceed.
The IMS is under tension from the cam chains. You need to lock the cams and remove the tensioners before removing the IMS cover as this is what locates the shaft.

If you don't, the shaft will pull over to one side and you won't get the IMS cover back in. Not to mention what might happen to your timing.

I'd suggest leaving it to a specialist to be honest, if you don't know why you'd lock and untension things before going in there. :thumb:
 
The gearbox, clutch and fly are off. The minor oil leak that I had hoped\assumed is coming from the RMS is actually from the IMS bearing :(

The plan was always to remove the (probably non-existent) seal and check the bearing but are there any views on

(a) oil leaking from the IMSB in general and
(b) what to replace the IMSB with nowadays if it is looking in trouble?

I suspect a few extra hours overtime are called for...
 
Bearing will be fine. It is the seal on the old IMS cover. The plate with 3 bolts through it.

There's a newer type out which should be fitted anyway while you're in there.

I'll post pics showing the differences. It's about £100.
