Axle stands

I am intending to get the wheels powder coated in a couple of months and need advice where to safely position the four axle stands.
Sadly I do not own a scissor lift as per Kat1, the perfect solution.
 
Hi,

If you find the right powder coating company you should be able to drop the car off in the morning and pick it up in the afternoon. Chris of Exel wheels will come to you and lend you a loaner set while he refurbishes them. Check out the wheel section on here.

Somebody will be along in a minute telling you lift the rear by removing the undertray and shoving a big trolley jack under the engine crankcase joint and hoist away until you can get axle stands under the standard jacking points.

The front they will tell you can be hoisted by putting a short length of scaffold board under the flat part of the frunk floor and lifting it with said big trolley jack and again sticking axle stands under the standard points.

All very well but personally makes me shudder to think about it.

As decgraham suggested - use Chis or find a wheel refurbisher who will pop the car on a two post lift for a day whilst doing the wheels.

The place I have used in the past for my other cars is only 10 miles from where I live and their turnaround is 2-3 days, they have plenty work all the time. Their prices are very keen too, up to 19" wheels the cost for 4 is £205 which includes wheel balancing and new valves. You have to take your wheels to them however, they do not accept wheels on the car.

Exel wheel refurbishment would probably have to come to me and that would cost from £400, no doubt they are good, plenty of excellent reviews but I will stick to who I know.

That is a good price, I had mine done back in 2010 at the "Wheel Specialist" in Birmingham for £235.00 all in, remove, strip, prep, powder coat, balance, new valves and refit, so a complete service.

OK going back to jacking the car up. I have a small trolley jack and using a jack pad (I bought it off a member on here who makes them) I am able to use the outer jack point at the back end and place a axle stand on the inner jack point. However, when I jacked my car up the other week, I was working on oil leaks, by using this method the whole side of the car came off the ground, both front and rear wheels, so you may be able to do it this way. You only need to lift the wheels enough to get all 4 off so I would think if you used axle stands at the back and wooden blocks / axle stands at the front under the front jack point you should be OK.

Thanks, I will give that a try asap. The place where I have had wheels done in the past is a small concern in a relatively small unit, they have all the equipment, but their running costs must be minimal.
Interestingly they do a lot of work for a well known Peugeot dealer in the NE, it's a well known fact, hundreds of new cars can stand for months before being allocated and in the case of these Peugeot's the alloy wheels suffer and need surface repair. They come to the unit in their hundreds and must be a good source of income!

Thanks for your comments 'decgraham" you were right in saying by using a trolley jack on the rear jacking point it will result in lifting both wheels on that side clear of the ground. There is just enough room to position axle stands under the car.
