Desirable spec....?

Not sure you will pick up a 997.2 in C4 or C4S guise for that sort of money although some good C2's to be had. Personally, at that price point I'd still go got a 997.2 as the 996 Turbo's in that price bracket will be higher mileage and so unlikely to "appreciate" significantly from an investment perspective and you're never really going to be able to use them to their full potential.

Just my tupence worth (as a non Turbo and non 997 Owner!) :dont know:

As a recent prospective buyer, and new owner, I let my head lead the purchase of a new car, rather than the heart.

I drove both 2 and 4 wheel drive cars and preferred the feel of the 2.

I wanted a manual S. Had to be in excellent condition - there are plenty advertised as mint which really are not, and had to have comprehensive history and receipts.

Colour wasn't an issue as long a I got the above.

Desireables were:

Sport Chrono
Extended leather
Heated seats
No sunroof

I ended up spending 6 months finding the right car and going 10% over my top budget, but it was so, so worth it!

I also convinced myself I had to stretch to Gen2, got a 'misery spec' 3.6, black on black.

Considerations:
Bore score
Gen2 likely to depreciate less than a gen1 (in my opinion).

Essential
Manual (essential for me)

The car I got (first I drove) had:
No PSE (shame),
no PASM (not tried one with)
No rear wiper (good),
no sunroof (good).
Standard (comfort) seats
Non-Bose (which actually is very good)

I never drove a gen1 S, as gen1 was off the table. Didn't drive Gen2 S as couldn't justify budget stretch.

I am more than happy with the experience, the feel from the steering is sublime, as is the feeling of the rear end getting the power down coming out of a corner.

If I wanted outright speed, I'd get another motorbike, the satisfaction comes from downshifting, Rev matching, and balancing the weight whilst powering round a corner on an open road.

What I'm saying is don't get too hung up about it, you will love your first 911 regardless, it is unlikely to depreciate, you really just need to decide gen1 or 2, manual or auto, 2wd or 4wd.

If am honest all I want is a manual 911, with a reduce risk of the engine not breaking !!! A few friends who work on Porsche have all gave me there opinion some for but most against and 997.1...
Am thinking the way forward is 997.2

Great topic,

I am in the exact same boat.

OP have you considered a rebuilt gen 1 or one with an OPC warranty on it?

Regards

Or get a hartech rebuilt 997.1 and have loads of money left?

This forum seems to have a lot of haters for the 997.1 but other pages I go on say it a low chance you will suffer bore scoring and ims trouble.

I bought a 997.1 with hartech for future proof trouble free motoring and keep the spare few 1000's for later.

Nice Purchase,

To be fair to those who are not fond of the 997.1.

During the class action in America against Porsche they admitted something to the tune of 1 in 8 cars would be affected.

Manual, PSE, Bose on a gen 2

Chrono is pretty pointless on a manual car

If you think this is the case, you don't drive properly. Completely changes the feel of the car when driving harder down B roads, makes it so much more responsive. I should know, I have a Manual C2S with Sports Chrono.......

Turn it on, turn PASM back off, lovely. I do occasionally leave PASM on, but on a bumpy B road it isn't good.

Do not believe all the hype about Gen 1 engines and bore scoring. IMS is a much bigger problem which causes far more damage suddenly without warning, so avoid 04/05 cars (see the details about engine numbers for the changeover).

Bore score might be visible, but speak to Baz at Hartech about what is actually a problem, and what is used by less than scrupulous people to tell you "it has bore score and needs a rebuild" against a tiny amount of marking which won't cause a problem for a long time. You can mitigate by the various things like don't go over 3000rpm until the oils warm, change the oil every year, not every 2 year service, LTT rad, and so on. Gen 1's are great cars. People screaming about DONT BUY ONE dont have them, or have Gen 2's and play the put down game. Like any supercar, they need looking after......

Is warranty at garages as good as they say ? I would buy one from a garage if it come with a good 12 months warranty........

I Keep getting told stay away from the 997.1.......

I got all the same "stay away but a gen 2 blah blah"

I bought a 997.1 two weeks ago, low miles with hartech engine so future proof as I've said. The same spec gen 2 would of been loads more.

Then you get people saying the 3.6 gen 2 pdk is as fast as the 3.8 gen 1.

It's funny as when I asked on a world wide Facebook page most said get it checked before purchase then let it warm up before hard driving, mixed opinions on if the third rad helps or causes more issues (is speak to hartech to get the right answer).

I'm summary if your getting a un rebuilt gen 1 get its bores checked (£200) and a ppi (£150) and then you know what your buying or wait till a hartech rebuilt one comes up for sale. I did consider a factory rebuilt engine but hartech improve the engine so it doesn't happen again.

Looking for the right 911 is a bit of a nightmare. Let me illustrate:

Are you a Purist or a Driver? Actual Daily Driver or Weekend Poser Pouch? Do you want a 2/narrow body or a 4/wide body? Do you drive in the wet? Snow? Summer? 3.6 or 3.8? Do you want six cylinders or eight (just checking)? Manual or Auto? Auto or PDK? Lightweight or Lardy?

What about provenance? Is it stolen? Misappropriated? HPI clear? Mileage? Real mileage? Condition? Tracked! Service history? File of Reciepts? Warranty? OPC or aftermarket? Inspection, bore or other? Crashed, scratched, bent?

Colour. Do you love it or can you live with it? Interior? Dead whale or coal mine? Do you want the Fat Boy/Mr Average/Skinny ***** seats? Do you need leather in your life? Is cloth even available? Does it have to be electrical?

Options? Rear arse wipe? Hot head? Nav or noise? And if noisy, BOSE noise or proper noise (PSE)? Extra noise? Extra clock on the dash? Do you need lots of buttons? Phone Home Darling Fiddly screen? Do you want to add coilovers (à–hlins) or software (TPC) one day? Kiddies or cage?

Dubs or proper wheels? OEM or aftermarket? Shitty Pirellis or Proper Mich? Yellow calipers or just OEM brakes thankyouverymuch.

Not to mention, You Need To Pick Your Tribe: are you Keep It Simple Son, Some Carrera Bloke Down the Pub, Mr SpeedyTurboKeysOnTheBar, or a Wannabe Flash Track Rat?

And finally, are you prepared to defend your choice to the death? Because some smart arse is always going to have an opinion...

:wack:

PS Sorry if I forgot something critical to the pre-purchase analysis. Like a fire extinguisher. Or exhaust tips or some such. Non-broken cup holders. I don't know.

Before I brought mine and after I have been looking for 6 months and was thinking I would never find the right car, I found one with all the options I wanted apart from a sunroof.

I was going to buy it and my father said to me try the traffic light test before you do.

What is the traffic light test you ask?

If some one pulled up next to you in the exact same car but it had a sunroof would I mind.

The answer, yes I would mind, so keep on looking...and I did !!

You only want Warranty Direct or official OPC porsche warranty, the RAC/AA ones you tend to get at dealers are awful. However, people like RSJ, 911V etc who specialise depend on their reputations and will sort problems out themselves. They do check cars thoroughly though so you can usually buy from them with confidence. speak to people who know the cars, not people who work in the trade. You only have to laugh at people on places like pistonheads who say "oh yeah the one with the chocolate engine" to realise some people know what they are talking about, some don't.

Find a car rebuilt by Hartech, or get a decent warranty (OPC is just over £2000 for 2 years). I had OPC warranty, but I've decided to get rid of it as my car is I believe in exceptional condition and I think it's now a waste of money.......

Hmmm, ok, i wont respond in kind to your rather unnecessary slight upon my driving abilities, but name a track of your choosing

I can live without the DBW throttle sensitivity trick and the other gimmicks, they add nothing to a manual car. If i had a PDK sport plus would be essential, with a manual, it's software trickery and nothing more
