Insuring your 993

Allan E said:
My premium to Carole Nash was £375, insurer is KGM for my 1995 C2, in June this year, 5000 miles p.a. and I was 66 at the time, postcode is NE39.

I started this post and I should explain my tale in trying to get cover.
I called Carole Nash (insured with them since 2007, all my three classics and since 1996-2006 with my bikes) in February this year asking for a potential quote for a 993 I hoped to purchase and was politely informed that I could not get cover because I had never owned a Porsche previously. They would only quote for a driver with 4-5 years experience of driving such cars. I tried to explain I was not a 25 year old and would not be tear-arsing around, no points, accidents or convictions, still the computer said no! After getting off the phone I was furious and called back later, explained what I had been told and was promptly given the same answer. After trying to reason with them I suggested my renewal for my two Mercedes in June and October would being going elsewhere, that is when I was offered a call back and after a day or so I was given what I thought was a reasonable quote, due to 'being a long term loyal customer".
As things turned out that particular car got sold and I started looking again and in May found the car I wanted. All I had to do was call CN back and arrange cover? wrong, the manager I had originally dealt with had left and I was back to square one, lack of driving experience etc.
After more threats of leaving CN completely, call backs etc a policy was arranged to commence in June however it took nearly 3 months to get an agreed valuation, they blamed the changed of reg number, I will be looking probably at a Porsche specialist broker next year.

Wow, computer says no.

I insure my 993 through a broker called Principal Insurance. It cost me £395 for a proper (not classic policy) with protected no claims bonus, my wife as a named driver, value of car £50k, and mileage assumed to be 3000 miles p.a.

The car is garaged and I've no points on my licence.

That's a dreadful experience, I'd leave them on principle (the principle that I'm an awkward sod!)

The other issue I find bad is that you can't get short-term fully-comp cover for a test drive before you buy a car. So you test drive with TP(FT) only. What I did, when I was buying, was tell the Insurance company I'd bought the car before the test drive and use the cancellation period to cancel if I didn't buy. (Obviously if the worst happens you have to buy... but most sellers say "you crash you buy" anyway, so at least that way I was insured!)

Anyway - I'd leave CN at the first opportunity.

PH5121 - that seems mighty dear.

Given mine is a daily driver, not garaged overnight and I refuse on principle to accept mileage limitations, I have to pay for 'normal Insurance'.

Mine is just a touch over £500 pa with a £50k valuation. The fact I am 29 doesn't really help...hoping it will drop somewhat as the car and I age together!!

I thought it was reasonable, but must admit to not shopping around as I thought it was okay.

(I can recall paying £800 third party fire and theft to insure my £600 mini city E as a youngster 25 years ago so paying less than half that cost for the 993 seemed acceptable).

For reference i'm with Classicline.

95 C2 Manual Coupe. Fully Comp, 5k miles per annum, garaged overnight and valued at £50k - £238.68

C.

Super happy with Footman James - can't remember the exact price (in the £300s) but it was easily the best one. Age 35, London Zone 4, garaged., agreed value £45k.

Also they reduced the premium by £100 when I recently joined PCGB.

True enough! I think the other reason some people pay less than others is you do get rewarded for not accepting the first renewal offer - it nearly always goes down significantly. Each of my last two renewal have dropped +£100, I seem to recall, when I queried the price.

In my personal experience, it has to be Lockton:

1996 993 Targa - £360

2009 Ferrari 430 Spider - £840

1992 Ferrari F40 - £1743

And they are also Porsche & Ferrari owners club recommended - actually Aston Martin too!

Excellent service, and you have a dedicated Client manager.
