I had a serious look at some 997's this week as my current car was ment to be sold Tuesday, guy never showed up!

Anyway I'd seen a 2005 997.1 which had had an engine rebuild on all six cylinders but not by hartech it was a welsh Porsche Indy.

So it got me thinking is there any difference between how any Indy rebuilds them compared to hartech.

I then saw another porsche Indy selling a 2007 (so will have better bearings) stated he had checked bores etc.

So which ones best?

1. 997.1 2004 81k Welsh Indy rebuild @73k. £22,000
2 997.2 2007 83k Porsche Indy 83k miles bores checked £27,000

Or don't buy an 04/05 unless it's had the hartech rebuild?

Gen 2 is a better engine full stop. No brainer!

With regards to engine rebuilders, all of them have their own manufacturing methods and will vary massively. I'm not dissing any other other engine builder, but if you want it done by someone with more knowledge on these engines than Porsche themselves, then it has to be Hartech.

Surely a 2007 registered car would be a 997.1 (gen1).
I thought the gen2s were released in late 2008 on a 2009MY.

Independent engine builders differ significantly in quality - but Hartech get great reviews.

2007 is not a gen 2. simple as that.

There are engine rebuilds, and then there are engine rebuils by Hartech. Some are deecent, but there are a load of cowboys out there so be careful.

Autofarm offer everything Hartech do and the owner doesn't sit scaring people on internet forums all day. That's who I'll use if I ever have to.

Yes beware of others but don't write them off. Lots in here will say a rebuild should only have the full works whereas my view is if you had a head problem there's no issue in just fitting a good used head.

Depends on mileage to be covered etc. My car will do 3k per year if that so while a second hand headed engine probably won't last as long as a full Autofarm rebuild, for the low miles I do I'd be weighing it all up.

Theres sensible maintenance/repairs and overkill maintenance.

Mind you if a bottom end went then I'd probably want a proper closed deck fully sorted motor.

If you can stretch to a Gen2 then go for it. They're bullet proof bar reports of one or two failures which any engine type out there will have.

Is a 2007 a gen 2?
I thought gen2 were '09 onwards?

Or did the 997 get a body facelift before it got the DFi motor?

I've got the first RHD 3.6 PDK that came of the production line and it was registered in Jul '08

One of the worst posts I've ever read on here. Baz of Hartech is one of hte most knowledgeable people around and Hartech have put hundreds of hours into research on the problems the engines can have, I've never seen him "scaring" people, just offering good free advice to anyone who asks.

Hartech are by far the best, why bother with anyone else. Im sure Autofarm are decent or good, I was more on about some of the ebay clowns who advertise an engine rebuild for £5000.........

IMO Baz does a fantastic job, both on the engines and on the marketting. That only speaks about his company, not about any others. Just because others don't post a lot on here doesn't mean they are bad (or good). DYOR.

Baz at Hartech would be the guy for me to rebuild one. But I have a Mezger car.

Go for the DFI-engined gen 2 MY2009 onwards - more money but more peace of mind if you don't know whats been done in the rebuild.

I'm not stretching to a gen 2 cheapest one I've found in a decent colour and miles is 37k and these other two are 22k and 27k so mega difference, if I'm spending 37k it opens doors to other makes.

If I had the option of who was to rebuild my engine yeah I'd read into all the good reviews of hartech but I'm looking at cars that have already been rebuilt to save me the hassle and cost.

The 2007 one threw me off a little as it has the better bearings and I've read and I quote "the 2007 engine vary rarely suffers borescore", which I find hard to believe as they didn't change anything part from the bearing till the gen 2 engine as far as I can read.

Part of the ad about the engine rebuild.

Due to the stories about bore scoring etc I bought this car as this engine was rebuilt @ 73,573 miles with 6 new liners and pistons and both blocks reconditioned including cylinder heads which gave me peace of mind. There are some cars about which have had only had 1 block / 3 cylinders done....i.e. half a****d job.

Work done by Welsh Porsche specialist.

It's only bank 2 that usually requires attention. Justification of expensively replacing perfectly good parts seems right to me.

Yeah you can look at it that way but personally if I'd pulled out a motor of a Porsche then I'd want it all doing even if other parts are fine just so I know it's all fresh. Maybe I'm overkill?

You can buy another 911 for the same price.
