J the dial in the middle of the dash is the sport chrono factory fitted you will also see a sport button and sport plus on a pdk

sport seats have higher side bolsters and shoulder bolsters the comfort dont but other than that look the same and come the same with semi auto or full auto adjustment some are heated some heated and ventilated.

sports pack is sometimes how some refer to the sport chassis which rides 10mm lower than a S car or some refer to X51 POWER KIT as sports pack.

you will also see things like extended leather which is a full leather and french stitched centre console , carbon pack which is the silver internal trim in carbon . there are so many options you hardly ever see two exactly the same . :thumb:

I have the C4S - my rationale was that I liked the wider stance and the 'safety net' of 4WD if I do something stupid!

Manual - as someone else mentioned, you won't need the sports chrono (stopwatch in the middle) but IMHO it is essential for the PDK cars

PSE or Porsche Sports Exhaust - for me the aural pleasure (oo-er missus) was just as important to getting the 'Supercar' feel about the car. When it booms off close buildings, it WILL put a smile to your face

Bose - some complain about it on here but on the whole I'm happy with it.

Heated seats - but mine is a convertible...

To be honest, all the other things I can live without. Main thing is to look at the work done on the car, service history and maintenance.

Good luck with the car hunt!

Bose is almost pointless, just gives you a sub, don't get hung up on Bose.

Sports Chrono, for those who say it's pointless on a manual, it really really really isn't. It's great for when you want to push along and makes it much more responsive to the throttle response etc.

For me the key is why do you want a C4S? Have you driven both C4S and C2S? When I took a C4S out it was noticeably heavier and less chuckable.

My car has:

Sports Chrono
Manual
C2S
PSE (always on, just fabulous!)
Hard Back sports seats (very nice indeed)
Heated Seats (for the wife, its a cabrio)
top tinted windscreen
Parking sensor

I have upgraded the PCM2.1 as it is amusingly awful, and by that I mean unuseable even when you add an ipod connection.

Key is condition, FSH by an OPC or a good specialist is essential. If the owner talks about having changed the oil every year, not 2, or warming up the car before thashing it, then you are on the right track.

I did have an OPC warranty, but just got rid of that as they wouldn't extend because I've changed the stereo. Nice to have, not essential.

As others say, work out what you want and be prepared to change the list. Waiting for that 'unicorn' car (i like that) is madness. Prices are climbing, get on with it! Some great dealers out there, and some awful ones, so come and get us to run the rule over any car you like!

Totally agree regarding Bose. It's easier to ditch PCM if the Bose system isn't installed.

Yours is a very similar car to mine it seems, I've not got chrono but the original owner had a SSK factory optioned. I think if I do go down the line of fettling it I'll get a cold air intake and custom map rather than having the sport map/button fitted by a dealer.

Heated sports seats in a convertible are lovely!

My 997.1 list was, outside History, Condition, Mileage

Musts

Manual
PSE

Nice

Wide
Bose
Sensors
Xenon

Gen 1, like the wide body of the C4S. As for the spec in my mind was thinking C4S, manual, with sports exhaust black leather.....
Anything else would be a bonus

Have you driven them? What sort of driving do you do?

They are very different drives because of the 4 wheel drive, not only for driven wheels, but for additional weight........

If you are a purist driver, then C2S is better, C4S is also great, but not as pure. I drove 6 cars, only one C4S and dismissed it!

If am totally honest I do about 2k miles a year, mostly bike to work. Used to go LE MAN every year so might put that in for next yr.....

Options I looked for on my first 997 Carrera: It must be Gen 2

Options I looked for on my first 997 Turbo: It must be manual (coz Gen1)

The rest was just that it was a good price for a good history and not too many miles (oh, and no silly internal colours).

Other than that, I think you can get hung up too much on specifics

PS - I can't understood how 'wide' can be seen as an minor option

Given that is shorthand for whether you'll get 2WD or 4WD (Carrera speaking) it should be a fundamental starting point given they drive/feel very different.

It shouldn't be in the same ballpark as to whether you want BOSE or not

First I would advise get a gen 2 car if you can.

Spec wise, the options to have both for your own pleasure and valued by the market:

-adaptive sports seats (18 way)
-heated seats (vital in the UK, would not be without them!!)
-sports chrono
-sunroof
RS Spyder center lock alloys (if gen 2, look far better than the other wheels)
-aero kit (for me was a must, transforms the car and makes it stand out, in a good way IMO just gives it that bit of extra aggression and presence on the road)
-carbon pack (seems like a small thing but if you can find a car that has it it makes a big difference to the interior)

That's what I had on my list- the first 4 are the big ones for sure, the others are personal preference, depends how high spec and distinctive a car you want?

The colour seat belts are also great IMO- red/yellow, I love that little touch. I have yellow, this is colour dependent would not work with all exterior colours I guess. Works great in a black/white car.

If it's a keeper I would strongly advise to not compromise on spec and get the most you can for your money, I did and am very happy I waited a bit longer to get exactly the spec I wanted.

I am quite worried about the bore score on 997.1 but would I be better getting a gen 2 carrera non S version. Got about £35k to spend

Ive probably done to much reasearch and spoke to, to many people but I've made my mind up, I can't live with the fact the 997 gen 1 engine might cause me s problem with the bore score. So it's either 996 turbo or a 997.2 ???
