CLR Project Leichtbau: adding lightness to the tune of 250kg

Richard,
Have just read Jeremy's article and you have nothing to fear; he rates your car very highly indeed.

As do we :thumb: . Keep on inspiring!

Thanks Russ :thumb:

My Mrs is currently in the UK and returns on Monday. I have put it to her, in no uncertain terms, that immigration will refuse her re-entry if she fails to bring a copy of the magazine with her

Some good news is that a redesign of the LSD is now done, so I'm hoping next week to get the car back. I have not seen the car since Beaulieu so it will be great to finally be able to crack on again.

A video review or two will follow shortly. It will not be the finished article as there are still a few key areas that I am resolving and I need time for all the fine-tuning, but it should however, give a pretty clear indication as to what all this crazy nonsense has done to my poor car.

Kingston: I tried giving your method a go but it didn't work. How would I for instance turn this into a picture here?:

Well done on the cover feature Rich! Very well deserved.

I spotted it on here last night so went for an early morning blast to my nearest town for a copy this morning. Looks like a good write up although I'm saving it for Monday when I'm waiting while my wife's car is serviced.

Glad you're nearing the end of the main project anyway. I'm sure it will always be evolving but at least the headaches and stress should be over eh. :thumb:

Host them on facebook

Doesn't work. You can onlu link jpg urls. Facebook don't create them as that.

Looks like I'm having the same problem. Tried to post a pic of front cover above. :dont know:

Edit!

Yep they want $399 per year now. Jokers.

So that's ruined everyone's previous photos in threads.

Screw you Photobucket! You're dead to me.

Just an update for any of you having bother. Post image seems good.

I'm also on Imgur but can't manage to get third party links. If anyone knows how, I'm all ears.

Of course this still means hours are now to be spent redoing all old photos in threads like these. Or do we wait and hope photobucket back down??

Anyway sorry for derail Rich, but it may be of interest to yourself. :thumb:

Also, I've read the feature now. Pretty good account of things and plenty of good pics.
I don't care much for the writer but there's nothing wrong with that feature.

Hopefully you're getting a few hours more sleep per night these days Richard.

Richie the feature is superb. It's a wonderful window into the work you've done and the potential you have. Well done, you truly deserve it. I owe you a beer or two either in Dinslaken or before

I'll try and pick up a copy. :thumb:

I'm going to track down a copy this lunchtime. It will be the first Porsche magazine I've ever bought, and the first car magazine for about ten years. That's how much this project means.

I really hope it doesn't disappoint you Martin!

N997B, the last 2 events we were at together, we didn't manage to get a chance for a proper catch up. Next time I'm holding you to your offer :drink:

Marky, agreed the author has a very serious and focused attitude to life in general and he never lets his guard down, ever! This does indeed rile many on PH. He is however a gentleman in real life and knowledgeable. The trouble lies in his desire for certain characteristics and technology in cars. He will not budge, so much so in fact, that he refuses to do any new release motoring journo stuff nowadays, as in principle, he doesn't like what is currently being manufactured. Fair play, he sticks to his guns with no deviation, so at least you know where you stand. Maybe this was beneficial for me; that a car such as mine really floats his boat ;)

He is a good writer though and knows how to drive. For me this was critical. The trouble is he was limited to 2500 words (even for a cover car feature). For this reason he has to chop about 50% of the article out, there is no spec-list for example, as this would have taken up a whole page alone. He could really only touch on a few of the keys issues of the project.
Steve 'the editor', also adds a few words on the first page for another view; so I was very honored that he made the journey specially just to see the car himself.

Alex, I've heard some WH.Smith's have sold out already so if you struggle to find one I managed to order a copy here

Not really posted on here since the tragic loss of my C4S but I dip in and out to see what's happening in the 996 world.

Went to Mallorca last weekend and luckily WHSmith in Gatwick had a copy which I read cover to cover by the pool. Luxury!

It's a great article, Richard, and I applaud you for getting the project through to the end. It was fascinating to follow the build on here and then see the finished motor in print.
I was hoping to embark on some minor weight reduction for the C4S but having the whole front corner taken off proved to be a step too far!

I hope this does prove to be the beginning of a great new business venture.
All the best, Rob

Still not got the car back guys so as a gap filler, I just popped down into the garage for 2 mins to make a little video:

Now just a few points:
As photobucket has an issue at present, I thought I'd try something else. Being on camera/in pics, ain't my thing but for the purposes of describing this issue, video format may help. Also it is raw footage, no p155ing about editing or adding funky music; as basically, I don't know how to. So camera drops and poor focus... are all included FOC

Video basically highlights a known M96 gearbox issue that starts anywhere from 60-90K miles normally. A whine that progressively gets worse. It is an expensive fix as the complete gearbox needs to be overhauled and there are very few capable of doing it with the Getrag transmission (70T hydraulic press required and some specialised tools). Mike at Sport & Classic in the UK is your man here.
In the case of my gearbox, it was the differential pinion bearing that was making the noise (The main output shaft inside the gearbox that transmits drive to the differential crown wheel). It would be good practice to replace both this and the main bearing during overhaul + the 2x diff bearings. Each of the large bearing are around £400, so it is not a cheap fix.
Hope this video helps provide a little insight into this problem :thumb:

Hi Rob, I hope you had a lovely time away in P.D.M ;)
I'm sorry to hear of your 996 adventure being cut short and thanks for the kind words about the project. Hopefully I'll get the car back soon so that the project can continue; in the meantime though, I'll have to make do driving the GT3RS

Useful tip Richie. Similar to the IMSB but bigger really

Oh and loved the camera drops. Nothing wrong with authentic  :thumb:

Picked up this threads issue of 911 and Porsche World today to read on the train, it'll get pride of place in the Morning Reading Room.

Cracking job, and one I suspect that is not yet over - looking forward to seeing how it develops next.
