Needs must, I'm afraid....

Looking to sell my 996 Turbo S cabrio - manual - 31K miles, black on Atlas Grey

Advice from a dealer mate is to get an inspection done at my local indy, get a thorough valet done and go down the private sale route.

Any thoughts out there as to the best way to go?

Thanks

Mike

Given the rarity of your car I think I would investigate the 'Sale or Return' options with reputable specialists before listing privately.

I sold my 996T privately, as I prefer to buy privately myself (so I get to know the owner), and thought the part ex price quoted by the OPC seemed pessimistic given the spec/condition of my car.

I placed a single ad on eBay, as I figure people buying these cars don't have huge numbers to choose from, and generally keep an eye on all the normal places (I did).

I probably had about 10 part ex enquiries (i.e. would you take X in px?), as you'd expect on a £50k car, so that's probably the biggest downside/sale blocker, unless you fancy taking a chance on a cheap px.

The serious enquiries were pretty obvious, and the chap who bought it didn't even ask for a test drive after I'd taken him on a decent 20 minute run. He did ask that I take the car to his preferred local garage for inspection, and I'd do the same.

All in all, it's more hairy than a part ex, or selling a standard hatchback, but I'd do it again. I wasn't under pressure to let it go, and was still able to keep driving the car, and after a couple of months I got all but 1k of my original asking price, which was 9k more than the OPC quoted.

Many thanks, Bo

:agree:

Your car is desirable but specialists will have the best customer base.

You wont have to deal with the tyre-kickers and bargain-hunters and will probably clear just as many £££s.

Good attitude and great result

I sold mine private a few weeks ago..without boring you with all the details, I had 3 viewings over about 3 months then 2 viewings in over a week, the latter bought it.
On each occasion I had the car detailed in advance of the viewings at much expense (I like to use the car so there was always an element of work needed before it could be shown).
The first chap loved it but got all out of shape when he noted the front bumper had been painted.. another chap had another to go look at (after shaping my whole weekend around him), another said he couldn't pay it for 3 months, another still sorting his finances out waiting on a house sale etc.. infuriating.
All this amongst jumping through hoops with hundred of email, inspections, take it here pick it up again, clean it again, afternoon, weekends etc..

Add to this folk that DO NOT KNOW HOW TO DRIVE wanting a test drive in your £50k motor. I had to endure all sorts of driving styles. One guy, he was the type that dropped down a gear or 2 needlessly before every bend(?), he liked to go round bends with the engine at 6000rpm?? He approached a bend at over 50mph and put my 911 turbo in 2nd gear. what the hell for? He also crunched my front spoiler on a slope with doing a U turn. There are no words.
Other test drives equally as painful as folk fumble about looking at switches instead of the road. awful..

That was enough.. It fine for a 3series BMW daily driver but I will think twice doing it again with such a fast expensive car.

Funny though, the actual guy that bought it gave me the least hassle and was in and away within an hour start to finish. Compared to the others with all the questions and hoops to jump through.

I have sold every car I have had privately, but next time.. I think I'm getting too old for that stress and time wasting. If a dealer can get me the same money I will be open to that.

That's not what I wanted to hear as I'm going to list mine next month  I'm not going to be listing it for a massive amount so hopefully people won't be so demanding of a 16 year old car. I'd like to think nobody will break it from test driving it. I'm quite nervous as I've only sold 2 cars before, the first for 2.5 grand and the second as part ex towards this one (a c2 against my turbo).

If you have the time then try private, its a rare car. I thought id of had interest in mine after my recent spend but I'm wrong. I just checked and there is another manual X50 advertised for £4500 less and in black/black so I think im over cooking it. I doubt that car has had £3200 of work recently but the gap in price easily covers that.
