Engine out

Hi all
C4s needs the engine removing to replace a air con pipe
2 pipes need replacing due to the one that runs along the drivers side sill been bodged at some point
cost of both pipes is around £280 and my local indy gave a price of around £700 all in
question is would it be wise to get the Ims bearing done while the engine is out as I intend to keep the car for a long time
getting a price on Monday for the bearing fitted £££££

The pipe that runs the length of the car on mine had a hole in it. My mechanic did my aircon this week only to realise this, so he cut out the part with the hole in and just reconnected the pipe. Vac'd it down, clean the system out, regased and checked for any leaks. Car is now ice cold and ready for it's hols on Thursday.

He charged me £100 all in.

Don't yank your bearing out, just have it checked and when ok, outer seal removed.

Keeping your old bearing that's lasted this long is a far safer bet than fitting a new 'unknown' one that may only last 5k miles.

I had to have the engine out recently to change the AOS- so would be worth looking at that, the clutch, the chain tensioner you can't get to without pulling the engine etc.

As Alex says, a decent aircon specialist (look for on that does plant and lorries as well as cars) or hydraulic hose specialist will be able to cut the damaged section of pipe out, and repair with compression fittings and flexible pipe.

Then there no need to drop the engine.

If you insist then get the aos changed, the brake pipe that runs over the engine, and check the fuel rail for corrosion.

Might as well stick a flywheel and clutch in too.

Oh if it has a few miles on it, new gear box mount and engine mounts.

Where to stop....

If you decide to go ahead anyway, there is a new dual-row SKF bearing on the market, which looks interesting:

Mr EGTE I've just checked out the PH posts and the SKF link to the bearing doesn't work, I've tried mooching around the website but can't find the upgraded dual row bearing, could you post the link here please.

Thanks,

I've tried to get air conditioning specialists look at the car nobody from my area wants to do a repair ie cut out old and replace with new so this is my next option
This is the 2nd indy that has looked at the pipe and both have said the same to drop the engine
Clutch was replaced about 1000 miles ago
Decided not to touch ims more items may need replacing when engine out.

Had my engine out at the start of the year and had a lot of future proofing done, to add to others suggestions:

Water pump
Brake lines that run over the engine
Plugs
Coil packs
Water pipes bonded/pinned (not 100% sure if that's just a Mezger issue tho)
Engine/gearbox mounts

Hi there,
Here's another link from Mr.Raymondo2:

Cheers.

Thanks for that, so can anyone confirm that this will fit in place of the 996.1 original dual row bearing (or even the following single row bearing)?

That sounds very interesting if a replacement is actually required rather than just removing the seal. Are those dimensions the exact same as the original one?

I wouldn't bother with an Indy or aircon specialist. Any decent mechanic with an aircon machine should be able to do it.

Replacing a decent dual row with an untested skf dual row is Russian Roulette.

Agreed but I did say that IF a replacement is actually required.
At the moment my understanding is that if a dual row bearing HAS to be replaced then you need to manufacture a spacer and fit a single row bearing.

Maybe this is a possible solution rather than going with the alternative aftermarket options which may not be any better/worse anyway.

Agreed.
