Oil Change Cost!!!

I travel to people I trust with my car, a 200 mile round trip to RSJ for servicing because A. they don't rip me off, in fact quite the opposite - they are more than reasonable B. they never go looking for extras to pump the bill up, again, quite opposite - they look at everything on the car, the technician gives you a real good run down on what is needed what can wait and the stuff that will likely need to be changed at the next service.

I have an OPC less than 9 miles from my house who will pick the car up from my place and re-deliver for no extra cost, yet I trust RSJ more so make the trek to them each time, money and time well spent. Besides, it feels like I'm part of a family with them not just a job-card number :thumb:

Oh the best bit? Circa £70 per hour plus vat. Bargain! My recent minor service including Mobil 1 oil, oil filter etc was £330 inc vat on a turbo.

Sorry but RSJ's £70 plus VAT hourly rate is not really a bargain - and their used car prices (advertised on here) are another story.

Minor service:

Miller's NT+ 5W40 from opieoils £100
Mann oil filter from ECP £10
Mann carbon pollen filter from ECP £20 (diy)
(Trusted) back street garage to change oil £40

Have you seen the prices of their stock and their set up?

No wonder they charge so much for labour.

Yes, it was dripping with money, three GT2RS's that i counted, a Carrera GT a few GT3s/RS, and what looked like an original 718, although there was more staff than you could shake a stick at, no one passed the time of day with me so couldn't ask!!

Friday must be a quiet day, I was there almost two hours and didn't see another customer :?:

And the stamp in the service book from your trusted back street garage means the next buyer walks away from your car. How much of a bargain then? This is a serious question, not a pop at you.

Did you see your copy of the Porsche-Tax agreement you signed when you bought the car?

The wording is hidden in the small print it reads "The new owner of this Porsche agrees to pay 100% Porsche-Tax on top of the going rate for parts and service in exchange for a nice coffee, a smile from the receptionist and a browse round a polished showroom."

:?

The good news is that if you ask on here first then you will get good advice about who is waiving Porsche-Tax in your area.

Speak to Matt at Porschacare, he lives in Welwyn Garden City and is excellent. Used to be head mechanic at Portiacraft for 15 years. What he doesn't know isn't worth knowing, very reasonable. my oil change was about £150 including the oil and always happy to check other things over when i need him to!

For servicing work using the Porsche Fixed Price scheme for Modern Classics, the cost at OPC can be a very small difference to most indys and for some indys it can be cheaper! I collated this information on a spreadsheet a while back and found littl difference in servicing costs between OPC on the fixed price schemes and indys and in fact some indys being actually dearer!

I rang these companies for prices for a 996 Turbo for (a) Porsche Annual Inspection (no fluid changes), (b) OPC Minor Service (only oil and pollen filter) and (c) OPC Major Service (all three filters changed -oil, air and pollen) including spark plugs. This was to ensure like-for-like comparisons as some indys use the 12k, 24k and 48k mile service categories and not sure which is equivalent to a OPC major Service with plugs.I also ensured that both prices included VAT as Indy prices are exc of VAT whilst OPC prices are inclusive of VAT.

Brake fluid change at an indy if taken with a service are fractionally cheaper than OPC - £75 + VAT typically = £90 inc VAT whilst the OPC price is £95 inc VAT.

I am not debating prices between OPC and indys for non-service work.

It remain to be seen what the OPC Fixed Price cost for a Major inc Plugs is this year as prices were revised down from £750 inc Plugs to £730 but no mention of plugs on the website. If OPC are going to charge for plugs in a Major Service on top of that £730 then they will become horrendously expensive vs indys and will have priced themselves out of that service for Modern Classics such as a 996 Turbo. Thankfully, mine did not need a major service this year.

I also support Dyno Mike's remark about the value of the service stamps in a Porsche purchase - what service was done, when and by whom are important considerations.

Well I guess it depends on how long you intend to keep your car. I have been on this schedule for the last 7 years, and if there is a problem I can't cope with, I take it to a specialist eg water pump, tandem pump, wheel alignment, spark plugs, brake fluid etc

My car has it's oil changed every year, using a better and more expensive oil than most specialists or Porsche will use, is well maintained and I save money where I can.

Changing a pollen filter and air filter - even I am able to undo a few screws!

A "service" IMO is basically an oil change - I don't believe in paying for extra "checks", when it is more or less covered by annual MOT inspection anyway. My mileage is also backed by a history of annual MOTs.

As for future buyers wanting to see a full service history - my car is already 12 years old, yes it will put some off not seeing a book full of stamps, however someone will come along and buy on condition, see a couple of lever arch files full of receipts, and see that I have looked after the car - for the right price, it will still sell when I am ready.

To be honest, it's less about the money and more about the customer service for me. Yes, £262 is shocking for an oil change, but i was a new customer, never been there before, I'd told the lady on the phone when I booked that I had just had an engine rebuild, it would have been nice if someone had taken the time to talk to me about my car, how long I'd owned it, why it had had a rebuild, what other issues I'd had with it etc etc.. for me that's just good customer service, know your customer, understand what motivates them, make them feel valued and do a good job for them, then you are more likely to retain their business in the future, and who knows, I might win the lottery one day and bag one of those GT2RS's!

I have always been quite cynical when it comes to car dealers, I've used two respected indies, a major service and an oil change, £1000, thank you very much sir! Neither de,onstrsted any customer service whatsoever, the only place I have been treated as I'd expect was at Hartech, think next time I need a service I will make a day of it and go to Bolton!

Spot on down to that last point

Totally agree.. people seem to think OPCS won't haggle.

OPC Wolves is a great example... they will match kwik fit for tyres... but also give you a loan car for the day, and a 101 point check.

They installed my cage for half the price the indy's wanted.

Money off the fixed price service.

Parts are always cheaper then d911... always!

I'm not saying all are like that, but ive only ever had good experiences.

I get a 'voluntary' oil change done annually and my OPC charges about £120+VAT for parts (about £20) & labour and I provide the oil.

Given that I don't get any stamps in the Service Booklet since it's voluntary, am inclined to do it myself. However, I suppose the OPC invoice is some sort of provenance in my history file.
