Porsche 997S-2005: Screeching noise from Engine

Demort said:
Ok .. my 2 pennys worth .. the noise continues AFTER the crank shaft has stopped moveing .. so no idler pullys , no water pump bearing .. nothing mechanical thats moveing basically ...

Its air .. probably the AOS .. if was a gen 2 then its definitely that as ive herd it on one of those before .

Get them to remove the oil cap when the noise happens or blank off the AOS pipes as that will prove it .

BOOM! What a reply!

Lol .. bless you ..

I only hope they dont start stripping the engine as it will turn into a very expensive AOS replacement .

Hahaha, indeed!

I don't think there's much doubt about it being the AOS but its easy to see why people that don't know these engines could think that its something very serious. It is LOUD too!

There is a place near me which has a very bad rep for ripping people off. The two worst examples I've heard of are them claiming to have rebuilt a 996 motor when in fact it was replaced by a stolen unit with a dodgy number. Second one was someone who saw mayo in the oil cap on a 986. The old dodderer who owned the car thought 'this is the head gasket' and took it to said garage who did nothing to dissuade him. They managed to turn around and 'rebuild' his engine within 5 days for £8k. Apparently he was over the moon... It had a lovely clean oil cap by all accounts.

My point? It seems very easy to con people when it comes to motor cars, in particular when to the untrained eye there appears to be a big problem. People seem to put immense trust in some places and end up just getting shafted.

It is a shame and something i hope is rare for garages to rip people off .. certainly leaves a bad taiste in my mouth thats for sure .

I think in this instance that the garage just has lack of experience and from the video it does seem like they are doing their best to find the fault.

Kinda worrying the OP hasnt replyed .. short poster just trying to get a quick solution i guess which is a shame , i answered the same day but didnt see this till my normal log on time :(

I just hope that the OP`s engine isn`t in a zillion pieces on a workbench somewhere, for no reason :nooo:

Sterling work once again Demort, you truly are an asset to 911uk and it`s members :thumb:

Looks like the OP joined to get some help! Would be worried having a garage that wasn't familiar with these motors ripping the gut out of my car

You deserve a bit of praise Iain... :worship:

Sorry for not replying but it really has been quite a tough time. I would like to thank every one of you for your feedback, support and guidance for what was a very stressful period whilst trying to sort this problem out. I can't tell you how grateful I am because without your advice, I no doubt would have been ripped off.

Here's the latest. I took your advice and had the car towed to a specialist. It was the AOS - It cost me £100 for the part and £200 labour. A little different to an engine rebuild that the original mechanic advised.

Thanks again!
