I thought it red lines at 6500 & the GT3 is at 7500rpm.
If so then you will hit the rev limiter at 6500 or just before.

If the car is faltering at those revs check it isn't a mis-fire caused by faulty coil packs or plugs.

The rev limiter cuts off the fuel to prevent over-revs and damaging the engine.

Hi :welcome:

As per Cheshire911 could be coil packs. Mind you it's not a bad thing to be cutting in at 6k RPM. Demanding those figures in all gears and Baz at Hartech is just going to sit by the phone waiting for a telephone call.

You could always have the ECU interrogated to see if a map has been put on to stop over revving into the ranges where Porsche AG would never honour the engine.

Is the vehicle a tip (auto) or manual?

You can always find any local garage with the software to plug into the vehicle and see (if any) errors are being recorded. That'll be your first course of action.

If no errors, see if the engine has been remapped to prevent over revs protected.

If none of the above-mentioned are present then a trip to a Porsche Specialists whom have a dyno run may be the answer to shed more information by reading the values and graphs.

If the engine is running sweet through all the gears, then that would be my course of action. But that's a fair amount of money to be spending to push the engine to it's safe limits.

Thinking outside of the box, the engine could be running to its limits now and there's a fault with the RPM indicator. But I doubt that scenario.

It's your vehicle now, you have the right to abuse or cherish. There's a guy around this area who has a newish Boxster, quite unique colour paint finish (so well known visually). OPC Wilmslow informed me he's absolutely nuts. When it's in for service, they look at the ECU data and it shows it's mainly driven in Sport Plus all the time. Even when he leaves the OPC it's given the full beans. Protected by the PDK, but absolutely ragged and abused.

Re: 997 Rev limiter stopping me at 6k

Hi all - picked up my first Porsche, a 997.1 C2, recently and have found at around 6000rpm the car lurches forward as if I'm hitting the electronic limiter. Have noticed this in 1st, 2nd and 3rd (haven't had the room for 4,5,6) and the car is up to temperature.

I'm fairly certain this should be happening around the 7/7.2k mark? Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

You are right, there's probably something wrong with the car. Either the rev counter is under-reading or the ECU, crankshaft sensor, or some other engine control component is faulty.

According to Porsche's specification for the 997.1 Carrera (not S), maximum power is 325PS at 6,800rpm and the rev limiter is set at 7,300rpm.

7,000rpm in first gear is about 45mph, in second gear about 65mph or thereabouts.

What does your speedo read when the rev counter is showing 6,000rpm?

In first and second gear the engine ought to rev smoothly and effortlessly up to 7,000rpm and beyond, with only part throttle, ie: without any thrashing or abuse - as long as you've let it all warm up properly first. You can actually do more damage by treating it like a turbo-diesel and lugging the engine from low rpm.

The car should happily rev beyond 7,000rpm in higher gears if you push it a bit harder but then you're into illegal speeds.

If it seems to be otherwise running smoothly, but hitting an apparent limit at 6,000rpm every time, then something is definitely wrong. A failed coil pack would normally cause the car to run rough all the time so that's less likely.

I suggest you get the car looked at by an OPC or a specialist.
