Folks,

Quick question for anyone with 5 minutes:

I am looking at a C4S convertible tomorrow, which has MoT advisories as follows:

Offside Rear Tyre deteriorating has shoulder cracks /and cut
Nearside Rear tyre tread shoulders deteriorating / cracking
Nearside Rear brake disc worn, pitted or scored, but not seriously weakened (3.5.1i)
Offside Rear brake disc worn, pitted or scored, but not seriously weakened (3.5.1i)
Offside Front Brake hose has slight corrosion to ferrules (3.6.B.4e)
Nearside Rear exhaust silencer casing deteriorated
Offside Rear exhaust silence casing deteriorated
Offside Rear Inner exhaust manifold ports flange corroded
Nearside Rear Brake pad(s) wearing thin /and offside rear (3.5.1)

In addition someone has welded the switchable exhaust open for effect.

So it needs:
Rear tyres, discs, pads
Rear half of exhaust or possibly all of exhaust replacing (which, please?)

Can anyone give me a ball-park figure for these repairs, so that I can go into this with my eyes open?

Many thanks

Rich

I'd call round a couple of Indys (and maybe an OPC for reference), simple enough quote to generate for them.

However, what I'd really recommend would be to take the C4S to a respected Porsche specialist to get a full list of what's needed, with prices.

Tyres I'd suggest your local tyre fitter, I am lucky to be near to a tyre shop that's part of the Micheldiver group and v. reasonable.
Rear about £400 the pair (I used to get a full set of Michelins for about £750
If you are getting uneven wear - might want to look at tyre pressures/ geo in the future.

Nearside Rear brake disc worn, pitted or scored, but not seriously weakened (3.5.1i)
Offside Rear brake disc worn, pitted or scored, but not seriously weakened (3.5.1i) .
Rear Brake set available includes discs and pads about £270 - easy DIY that's Orig manufacturer parts Sebro and textar, get the same in Porsche boxes and you can add 70%

Offside Front Brake hose has slight corrosion to ferrules (3.6.B.4e) .

Common issue (my OPC put a jubilee clip on it and it was fine for the last five years of my ownership - never mentioned again. But it is an expensive repair - its been mentioned on the forum - possible other ways of repairing? specialists that can repair and replace just the join in question.

Nearside Rear exhaust silencer casing deteriorated
Offside Rear exhaust silence casing deteriorated .

They do deteriorate - the most common issue is the seams at the bottom of the rear muffler/boxes rusting / out and splitting, mine did I replaced with Dansk. (But the build quality of the Dansk has been recently questioned - have a search on the forum.
FYI - I kept my rear boxes when they split and have just had them welded them up and listed on ebay, they are PSE boxes, might be serviceable for a few more years now.

Offside Rear Inner exhaust manifold ports flange corroded
manifolds can be a pig to replace - rusty nuts - lookup on the forum - never had to touch mine thankfully
Nearside Rear Brake pad(s) wearing thin /and offside rear (3.5.1)
(see above comment about brakes).

In addition someone has welded the switchable exhaust open for effect. .
if you have the switchable option its quite desirable and expensive to replace with Porsche OEM part £3500 +VAT though I believe top gear do a switchable version also. (see my earlier comment about the ones I have for sale  )

If the MOT has come up with that lot then I'd expect another five to ten grand in work to get the car into A1 condition, on top of the work that has been identified, hence suggesting a PPI.

If these issues are what is obvious for an MOT, you really need a full PPI to find out what the car is REALLY like. If these obvious "issues" have been neglected then what are the radiators, air con condensers, brake & air con pipes like? My 997 did an average of 3.5K per year & I noticed "tyre deterioration" & rusty discs were a common issue due to limited use.

:yeah:

I would be worried about the things the MOT hadn't checked/found. a PPI is the only way to know for sure but I would expect a big list of issues. There are few cheap repair jobs on a 911so the 5-10k figure quoted above wouldn't be a surprise in this instance. Personally, I'd be walking away.

OP (and with the greatest of respect for the above posters) there's another way of looking at this.

It's got worn tyres and brakes, and a rusty exhaust. Most used 911s will have.
It also sounds like a very zealous MOT tester had their hands on it.

The brakes could be DIY'd for a few hundred. Double that to have them done prefossionally. Tyres as above. The exhausts all go like that. As far as I know it's not an MOT fail until it blows. The rusty manifold flange might clean up if it worries you but probably won't need actually replacing.

The only thing I would have thought actually needs doing is the brake pipe with rusty ferrules. I can't believe anyone would put jubilees on a flexi brake pipe to save £30(?) for a part and £70(?) fitting. I suspect the poster above is thinking of the power steering pipe which infamously suffers this and can be so repaired.

It's good advice to get a PPI - yes there could be lots more wrong (the C4S has one of the most bore-score prone engines for example) but based on the MOT advisories, I don't see much that's unusual.

Good luck, hope you like it.

You didn't mention price, spec or mileage - which may be to hide the advert but this would also be a big decision if it were me.

I've also got a C4S cabriolet - similar buying guide as coupes but check the drain holes all around and under the seats / carpets where they can be water if said drain holes are blocked. Check cabriolet roof is in good order too obviously.

Porsches need to be kept on top of the maintenance otherwise new owners will be left with a nasty bill in the first couple of months. I've done mine out of OCD and love my cars, there are plenty others here that will do the same however other owners don't have that level of care - some of this will also be seen in the interiors as the 997 (imho) doesnt stand up too well if the owner hasn't been careful e.g. Scratches on the PCM, seat bolsters, tears in the leather

Good luck with purchase, PM me if you have any questions happy to chat. Find a good one and it'll put a MASSIVE GRIN on your face which never goes away.

You could spend £800 addressing that lot with second hand and very cheap ebay parts, or you could spend £6000. If I were buying it I would budget £1500 for tyres, brakes and new but non-switchable Dansk exhaust boxes. If I was paying someone else to fit them then I would add another £600.

The one thing you won't be able to sort out cheaply if you're not very handy with the spanners are the exhaust manifold flanges. The bolts that hold them in rust terribly and yours will be bad. It's £1000 give or take a couple of hundred to get them removed and new stainless bolts put in.

Tyres can be £400 PZeros or £250 for Falken/Kumho.
Discs and pads are cheap as chips from CP4L.

These set my "over zealous MOT guy" alert off:

The brake pipe flexis have surface corrosion - thats the first thing they do on any car. Are they actually at risk of failing?

£17 each corner for a Pagid flexi from cp4l.

The Exhaust boxes have corrosion - probably lower seams like everybody else's 996 that haven't already been replaced!! Are they actually leaking? Consider Top Gear brand rather than Dansk as they had trouble with flexible joints.

Exhaust manifold - again, every 996 you see will have rusted manifolds where they join the engine. Are they actually leaking? Mine look like they been at the bottom of the sea since 1999, but they don't leak. A time consuming job of drilling rusted studs out on your back, so don't bother unless they are actually leaking.

Genuine manifolds are £££££££££££££££ though, I have a set I scored on ebay for £100 from a 20k miles USA car waiting to go on. Some people fit the cheapish stainless manifolds off ebay, but the jury is out regarding impact or not on performance.

Use the list to get a good chunk of money off the car, but theres nothing serious there. Get it to an Indy and get their opinion if you want, but some indies can be as bad as OPCs.
