All,

Looking for some advice and ideas, I pull up outside B&Q today, loaded the car and when I went to restart all i got was a click. Tried to start three or four times and the same thing, a click and nothing else.

To get the car going again I had to roll it forward and put it in gear and let the clutch out. I didn't jump start as didn't have the speed, but the car started straight away and has been fine for the rest of the day.

Has anyone experienced the same issue?

Kevin.

I have had this issue with mine recently too only intermittently.

I changed the battery and that didn't stop it. I was fairly convinced from reading into it on here that it was a starter motor but we finally discovered it was the earth strap from the battery. Cheaper parts wise but the extra Labour offset the cost if the starter motor that I didn't need...

Hope that helps

Does it turn over very at start up when warmed up.

This is what happened to me and replacing the earth strap helped.

Is your battery a Moll - if so the older ones die unexpectedly with no warning. If the issue is that it fails to start even after a long run more likely earth strap?

Thanks for all your help, I'll monitor and see how I get on. Will keep you posted

Kevin

All,

Same problem happened yesterday and I call out the recovery. They put a battery pack on the car and still nothing, just a click when i turn the ignition. He has suggested it is the starter motor, OPC estimate £700-800 fitted.

Anyone recommend a good specialist I can take it to near Southend Essex?

Kevin.

Did they not check your earth strap on your engine?

No, he literally just tried to jump it, then said it was the starter motor.

I'll check the earth strap today.

Thanks for the advice.

Kevin.

Not on the 996 but you old Speedster. Has been over for Classic Le Mans and holiday. On way back had run from Bauge ( south Le Mans) up to north of Rouen. Stopped for coffee and would not start thought immobiliser but started with gentle bump( we had been traveling fairly quickly 😀) We then stopped at the shops in Calaise for quick top up again would not start. Drove on Chunnel expecting worst, but started ok when got to UK. Checked battery at home all ok, battery earth ok , but when checking engine earth found green corrosion where it passed over the rear suspension. Changed this never had a problem again. Just seemed when really hot the earth was breaking down. Worth a try

To test it, clamp a jump lead on your engine and the other to your battery earth if it'll reach, if not, to the chassis on bare metal. Should prove if its that or not.

Just my 2 pennys but im pretty happy its going to be the starter motor .. the contacts in the solinoid get burnt causing the click but no spinning because of the high resistance in them .

OPC have a Huge mark up on starters and they are after all just exchange units , i would strongly urge you to use an indy or buy a starter from ecp and fit .. its not a hard job with write ups on here .

Either way keep the receipt for the starter as i have had a few come back inside of warrenty and not working , with another starter being needed .

Thanks Brownspeed, read your post. Not sure i'm up to the DIY, the car will never run again if I touch it !

Kevin.
