Newbie Porsche Virgin - 997 C4S Project

Cylinder head valves have arrived.

After work im gonna take them down to the unit so they can start working on the heads. Whilst im down that way im gonna call into some recommended welders to get them to have a look at the crankcases.

Quick update!

Mark at Ramus Porsche managed to locate me another crankcase which is better condition with no cracks or repairs at a good price. It might need lining but dropped it at a boring specialist who is going to take a look next week. Also ramus has sourced two rods and two pistons in good nick. Ordered a secondary air pump pipe which was damaged previously. Dropped the valves off at the head rebuild place and hopefully have everything back next week and all parts required to start the build. At long last im getting there. Even when its on the road i'll have more headaches trying to insure a 4s at 26 haha.

So last week i managed to collect the refurbed heads. They were done at bilston cylinder repairs and theyve done a cracking job.

Ive also got the crankcase back after being lined and got the rods and pistons.

Got a call from Mark at Ramus to say the engine is being rebuilt as we speak and to drop the car off at the garage. So yesterday i got the car recovery trucked down there. I have deceided whilst everythings off to fit a new clutch and low temp thermostat. Also realised when i was down there i'am missing a few parts. I need both bumper heat shields. One mount for the heat shield, a passenger side drivershaft and engine trays. Drop me a message if anyone has any bits.

Item number 262666547900 on Ebay.
If they are what you need your in luck.
Tried to buy from this guy before, he is fairly fixed with his prices.

Looks like its progressing nicely Dan :thumb:

We've all said how brave you are but well done with moving this forward so quickly!! Good luck with the Insurance 😂😂

Interesting project and will keep an eye on your progress, good result to find the owner and get the motor back but what a mess it was in.

You have done the right thing sourcing a replacement crankcase, the old one is just scrap!

I'm not sure of your budget for works but consider having the case fitted with a set of 6 liners to make this a rebuild and forget job.

I may have a few spares that you'll need as I seem to have a spare RMS for the 997 engine and a set of big end bearings if the journal size is the same as the 996 3.6

Best of luck with it

It would be great if you could share some pictures from the engine rebuild and installation: 997 thread of the year!

Great job Dan :thumb:

Have you tried 9apart for any bits? Reputable Porsche breakers who I've purchased off before.

Had two exhaust brackets off them last year in good nick. Opc wanted £307 each :nooo:

C2.1GTS.2 - Thanks for sourcing the bumper shields, worth bearing in mind but will try and find some second hand ones, sourced a second hand passenger side for £30.00 already. Also found a driveshaft for £40.00 and the mounts are cheap new from Porsche.

Alfaian - I have used 9apart for head valves and they are very reasonable, will speak to them on monday for parts.

MaxA - Ramus are taking photos of the rebuild and installation for the project, they are aware the thread is online.

Harv - Thanks for the help but don't know if it will fit and I believe Mark has sourced me one and to be honest I know where your coming from getting all 6 liners done but just gone off the recommendation of Mark and had the 2nd bank done.

silvermilnec / Phil 997 Thanks for the comments, Hopefully this time next week it will be all in and running.

All sounds positive Dan .

Have you had any quotes on the Insurance yet? Maybe an older relative could go as main driver with you as additional driver :dont know:

Haven't done a quote in a while but last time I did a quote it was quite high. I am now 27 and have 9 years no claims. A lot of people have recommended Adrian Flux.

I wouldn't. When I first bought mine they wanted over £700.

I've been with aviva then two years with Tesco both under £300 and now with Axa as they were the cheapest at £302. All the others wanted over £350 this year for some reason.

I'm an old git though at 50

Thought i'd put up some progress pics.

When Mark at Ramus was about to start building the engine back up he noticed some of the rods had turned blue due to heat. So manage to locate another three rods.

Heres some pics of the engine being built.

I got a call last thursday to say the engines been fitted in the car and that it started and ran well.

It has brought up error lights now its running. After being plugged up on a diagnostics it came up that it needs two new lamba sensors and valve lift actuator sensor. Also the rear anti roll bar seemed to be missing so managed to get a second hand one cheap.

Mark had a look around the car to see if theres anything that might fail the mot. All of the tyres were really cracked and some with very low tread. Managed to get 4 part worn michelin pilotsports n rated part at a decent price. When the tyres were being changed it was noticed that the rear springs were cracked.

Being m030 springs due to the sports supension these had to be backordered from germany.

Hopefully all the sensors and bits will be delivered and fitted by the end of the week. Then it can be taken for a test drive.

Have picked up a few goodies as well.

Got a new cayman wheel. Been looking for ages for one in sea blue.

This what it should look like once fitted.

Managed to get some good nick second hand rear led lights aswell. Gonna get front drls soon.
