996 gearbox strip down and rebuild?

Sorry one other thing. What Gearbox oil are people using? I know it's 75W90, I am currently running Motul, but just wondered what brands people recommend? I've heard good things about Redline...

I've used Millers NT+ 75w90 on my car - just dropped the gearbox oil out and had no reason to believe it had ever been changed as the filler plug was bastard tight. Change quality is *so* much better now, it feels really positive and snickety. They do two types, one with a friction modifier for LSDs.

I used Motul 300. No real difference to whatever was already in there. Second still pops out for the first 4 miles when cold!!

I have just changed mine to Millers and as you say such a noticeable difference. Even from cold.
The drainplug is a bastard to get out. I did notice though that the new one I bought was ali so should not be a problem next time

I agree with your remark about a used gearbox - it could be needing work or it could be worse than your example. If your box is rebuilt, you know where you stand versus an unknown gearbox.
agree. Also agree with your comment that a good few of the 'boxes S&C rebuild are subsequent to failed fixes by other firms (including at least two OPCs to my knowledge, who will remain nameless) which tells a story. Stripping the 'box from the car and sending by courier, if you have the means to dismantle, seems a very good compromise between full DIY and having the whole job done for you.

Thanks guys :thumb:

This is what I went for James; the Ester based Motul 300. There were no real signs of metallic paste build up on the magnetic pick-up so I'll risk driving over for the Beaulieu event in a few weeks.

This video may give an indication of the gearbox noise:

Your not having much luck recently!

If you do get Mike at Sports and Classic to rebuild the box, i'd be interested in what it cost you. I'm in the middle of replacing the clutch master and slave cylinders and hydraulic hose in an effort to rule out clutch drag as the issue with second gear when cold. I'm not holding out much hope though.

Good luck with the other issue as well....

There are load of gearbox specialists out there (all over Europe) and I've had mine rebuilt a couple of times for quite a lot less than the specialists charge. It just about remembering the order they came out and the need for a decent press.

For the 3.6 absolutely true, the 3.4 on the other hand is an utter nightmare. Basically the 3.4 came with a symmetrical differential pinion bearing that was made in Brazil. There were quality control issues so Porsche then decided to source a higher quality spec bearing in Germany which was also redesigned with a groove in it. You can now only order the 3.6l bearing from Porsche so you are stuck. Basically you have to have a custom made shim manufactured to fit the 3.4l gearbox, which can't even be made prior as it is calculated to the clearances which are different in every case. Hence why Mike at SC gets so much of these issues pushed his way.

I've just had the pleasure of dropping the gearbox without a ramp/lifter. Utter nightmare lying on the ground on your back removing it. I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy. Can't wait for the pleasure of fitting it back in again

I have a noisy 1st gear on my box. Rather than rebuild it, I have sourced a 997 box from a 3.8S and I'll be fitting that next summer, once my house/garage rebuild is complete. I'll be swapping over the LSD and rebuilding it, but the box has only done 20,000 miles so I'm pretty confident it will be OK. I will have to put in a 997 shifter mechanism/cables and some 997 clutch parts, but it's all stuff I would have been putting in or replacing anyway.
