Lovely thread!

Nice to know the whole tale about this car. I've seen it for the past 4 years often when I've been in to see Jamie at Nelsons. Even though all the 'cobra' wrap etc wasn't to my tastes it always looked like it had been well done unlike a lot of other cars you see.

What have you used on the wheel liners to get them looking so clean? Whenever I try it they always look ok but when they dry they end up looking naff...

Hi Guys,

Thanks, just need to get out and enjoy the bloody thing for now, or at least till the next big project starts, front end off, fit new rads, water and air con. later in the year for that though.

@ragpicker, thanks mate, yeah the wrap wasn't the best but needed to get to a point before taking it off in case the paint work was bad underneath. All gone now though !!! looks so much better IMO. Thumb

As for the arch liners, I just washed them with car shampoo and water, dried them off then covered them in "Turtle Wax" Wet an Black Tyre Shine. after 10 mins wiped off the excess with blue roll and job done... thumbsup

Hi Guys,

Had a lot on lately, but managed to find a bit time this afternoon so here’s just a little update.

Continuing straight on from the last post. So, now the suspension has been refitted to the car. It was time to fit replacement hubs, track rod ends, stabiliser links, new ABS sensor, brake discs and callipers etc.

Next was something I’d had on my mind for a while, once when I was following Mark whilst he was driving my car, I spotted something I wasn’t happy with. The catalytic converters, just looked like two horrible rusty lumps hanging down past the bottom of the bumper and really spoilt how the car looked. Long story short, Hello Top Gear and some 200 cell X-flow sports cats! Lovely piece of kit that looks amazing when fitted and really cleans up the rear end.

While the cats were off I took the opportunity to replace the engine mountings.

Now, the reason for the cats. I found that after fitting the Dansk ‘sports’ boxes, it sounded like a hairdryer. There was no Porsche sound there at all. I mean, it had standard manifolds and standard cats so how could it sound so bad. I thought that a set of x-flow cats would sort this problem out for me. It actually did to an extent. It gave the car a slightly more ‘raw’ noise with very slight popping on overrun. This however still wasn’t what I was looking for, I wanted something in between the cherry bomb exhausts I’d previously had fitted and how it was now. Back to the drawing board!

For now, I had formulated the next little shopping list:

New genuine rear support bar bushes
New genuine rear brake flexi to brake pipe brackets
New OE Bosch Lambda sensors x 2
Brembo handbrake shoes
New powerflex gearbox inserts (I’ll discuss these later on)

The next item I came across was a little strange, whilst on eBay I came across a newly listed Bosch coil pack. This coil pack was listed as brand new but the price didn’t reflect this! I got the part number and searched google to see if this was in fact for my car, turns out it was! So how could a brand new Bosch coil pack be for sale for £3! Yes, that’s correct, £3!

I thought what the hell, it’s only £3 so I bought it. No sooner had I paid for it using PayPal, I’d received an email from eBay saying that the listing had been changed. They had changed the price from £3 to £38.50!

At this point I was waiting for the email to tell me about the mistake they had made and would have to refund me my money, which I’d have accepted as it was obviously a mistake and I’m not one to rip anyone off.

This email however, never came. So after a week, it hadn’t arrived. I messaged the seller to find out what was going on. They replied telling me that the Bosch coil pack was in fact out of stock at the suppliers and could only offer me a replacement or a refund. They said they had an NGK coil pack on the shelf which will fit my car and would be happy to send that one out, so I accepted.

This arrived a few days later and all was good, surprisingly! Ha. The thing is, even though they said it was out of stock at the suppliers, the listing was still active for the Bosch Coil Pack three weeks after!

So, back to the exhaust problem. I decided to call on a good old welder friend of mine and ask him if he would do the Gundo Hack on my stainless Dansk boxes. He said he’d be more than happy to sort it out for me so I removed them and dropped them off.

Three days later was like Christmas day, got all the parts back from the powder coaters and later that evening my mate turned up with my Gundo’d boxes.

Now the next bit was a bit sketchy. I’d heard that 1” pipe was far too quiet but 2” pipe was on the loud-ish side, so I asked my friend if he’d get some 1.5” pipe and try that. So when I got the boxes back and he’d used 1” pipe I was a little bemused. But anyway, it’s not like I could complain as he only charged me £40 for the whole job done!

I had a 1.5" hack on a set of standard exhaust back boxes for a while... I came to consider it a bit coarse/unrefined for how a Porsche should sound, so I think you'll end up coming back round to feeling like the guy actually did you a favour.......... but that this will take a few weeks and initially you'll be lamenting the extra 0.5" you'll feel you're missing... : )

I ended up with a "mid-range" volume set of Cargraphic rear boxes, standard 3.6 headers (on a 3.4), 200 cell x-pipe cats and GT3 "large bore" tailpipes in the end, that finally gave me the end result I wanted...... and then had the headers plasma ceramic coated (primary black) by Zircotec... which quietened everything down a bit more from my "nirvana" point, but I actually like having the Jekyll & Hyde split between low and high revs back again......

FYI - don't go "equal length" stainless headers - Porsche got it right in the first place... the end result (feels like) less torque somewhere in the mid range (weirdly!) and is just too high and strident to feel sufficiently "Porsche" in combination with the 200 cell cats...... in my opinion.....

You are totally right. The gundo'd boxes were actually fitted earlier this year, they did make the car sound a bit better, but something still wasn't right. i'm actually running the Top Gear Valvetronic boxes now and wired in a genuine PSE switch. They are so much better.

Yep - I wasn't 100% sure what I wanted at the time, but came across a used set for a bit of a steal that just needed some rewelding around the pipes and the edge of the internal baffles i.e. I assume they must have developed a slight rattle and lost their shine...

Cargraphic do 3 levels of sound for flapless rear boxes
- TUV, TUV Sound, and Super Sound

Mine are the "TUV Sound" (CARP96ETR), but I cant imagine the "Super Sound" would rate as anything obnoxious. No real "burble" equivalent at idle but building howl as revs climb....

Hi Folks,

Another rare occasion where I’ve found some spare time so thought I’d update my thread a little.

So, It was almost service time AGAIN and a new list was formulated for the parts I needed.

The thing is, I’d decided I wanted to have the car ‘setup’ engine wise. There is a guy further south of me that is apparently a “wizkid” at setting up Porsche engines, I’d heard he does most of the Porsche race teams in the country so I sent him a message enquiring about what it is he does and the cost of this setup.

He replied telling me everything that he does to the car, and things I should possibly look at sorting before heading down. First being the coil packs and secondly a new fuel pump, these can get weaker as they get older so they make the car run lean higher up the rev range and he wouldn’t be able to set it up as it should be.

So seeing as I’d already got one bargain NGK coil pack I thought it only right to buy another five matching ones.

I bought,

New NGK Coil Packs x 5 (6 in total)
New OEM Siemens VDO swirlpot fuel pump
New Genuine Oil Filter Set (Oil filter, Oil filter housing, housing seal, sump plug and washer)
New Genuine Coil Pack Heat Shields x 2
New Genuine Coil Pack Heat Shield Bolts x 4
New Genuine Bumper Bracket Screws x 4
New genuine Lower Bumper Heat Shield Support Brackets x 2
New Genuine Under Tray Plastic Nuts x 5
New Genuine Front Wheel Spats Left and Right

Some of this was to drop off with Jamie for while it’s in for its service and some for me while putting the car back together.

At this point, I’d had the Gundo’d Dansk boxes back on, but unfortunately wasn’t too impressed.

Don’t get me wrong, it did sound a hell of a lot better, the cats and hacked boxes went together well, on tick over there was a nice burble, but as soon as you rev’d it up it went back to sounding like a hairdryer again, it still wasn’t right.

This is when I went out and done the one thing I should have done from the start. I purchased a brand new set of Top Gear Valvetronic remotely switched ‘PSE’ style boxes.

Now at this point I hadn’t had time to fit them. To look at they looked fantastic and from what I’d heard off of you tube, I had no doubt that this time I’d found the right solution and would have the best of both worlds, quiet and loud!

Now time to refit all the parts I’d had removed for powder coat.

Also got the calliper decals on, I decided to not have these lacquered over like normal because I found they discoloured over time.

I got a friend of mine to make me quite a few so I could change them as and when required.

Now the car was pretty much all built back up, I needed to have another geometry set up as I’d had all the suspension off and also fitted new track rod ends etc. Mark graciously offered to do this for me while i was at work. Thanks Buddie, he sent me this.

This time I had the same standard GT3 settings applied as last time but decided to increase the front from negative 1.5 to negative 2 degrees, I’ll run this for a bit and see how it feels, I can always get it dialled back out if it messes with the handling too much.

So the car had been to Jamie’s for its service and all was good, running sweet as a nut! The fault with the air con was that the condensers have rotted on the inside. This isn’t a big problem as the front radiators and air conditioning radiators were going to be overhauled this year anyway.

The only issue I have with the car now is with the Powerflex gearbox inserts, they make the car feel nice and tight, no movement from the box when changing through the gears, it really does feel great. But the problem is the noise. The bushes sandwich up against the gearbox hanging brackets so I’m get vibrations, box noise and whirring through the floor. Apparently this does settle down after a bit use so I’m happy to leave them in for now as it doesn’t bother me too much at the minute, but if they’ve not quietened down by later this year or by its next service, I’ll be having them removed. It does sound and feel a little like my friend’s race car, not what I want in a road car.

Mark told me about a guy selling a pair of Air Con Rad’s on eBay for £70 and would throw in the ‘O’ Rings too. I purchased a pair of these thinking they probably wouldn’t be that good, but when they arrived I was quite surprised, I mean for £70 even if they only lasted a few years you could treat it as a serviceable item. Apparently though, the supplied ‘O’ Rings aren’t very good and don’t seal properly. Time to get on to Mr Porsche for some genuine ones which are apparently a little bigger so give a much better tighter fit.

Whilst talking with Jamie when I was picking up the car I told him I was thinking about getting Stainless Steel Manifolds to match the rest of the exhaust system. I had mentioned this to him before but he advised me to leave them if it didn’t need them because of the hassle with snapping bolts. So when he said “I’d get them if I was you” I was a bit surprised. He said he remembered me mentioning it before hand, so had a look at the bolts on mine and said that they all looked pretty good and was pretty sure they’d all come out without snapping. Fingers crossed.

So, back on the phone to Top Gear. Ordered myself a set of manifolds and gaskets etc, and as a special bonus for buying cats and switchable boxes he gave me a free upgrade to the “ceramic” coated manifolds. This only helps with heat apparently and doesn’t make a difference to the sound at all. Great service from these guys, always seem happy to help and after sales service is second to none.

It was nearly time to fit the back boxes and all I could think about was the remote fob supplied with the exhausts for switching the valves. Whilst I had the car stripped down I’d much prefer having a genuine PSE switch in the dash and using that. So a few days later when a brand new genuine PSE switch came up for sale I took that as a sign and bought it. Ha

After searching the web for a few days I came across a few wiring diagrams of people that had wired in the genuine switch to cars that didn’t originally come with it, I showed my dad these and all he said was that he’d need the switch wiring diagram and he’d most likely be able to sort it from that. A few bench tests and new parts later, he’d eventually came up with what I needed. A working setup. This picture off the net shows how it’s done.

Another thing on my list is that my car has the GT3 front bumper, not the Aero Kit front bumper. The GT3 bumper has the hole cut out for the centre radiator, the Aero Kit doesn’t. It’s always bugged me having this empty hole and I wanted something to fill it. I looked at the mesh grills you can get but didn’t really like them, so the only thing I could do was to buy the centre radiator, shroud and brackets and fit that.

I was going to plumb this in, but have been advised against it. So now it’s just something to fill the hole. At least it’ll look better I suppose.
Obviously had to send the brackets off for powder coat.

So the time had come to fit the Valvetronic exhausts. I couldn’t wait to hear how these sounded. Fitting the boxes was easy having fitted loads of exhausts before. In fact, this was set number 5 for the car whilst in my ownership.

I removed the rear bumper, exhaust heat shields, rear bumper bar and heat shield and the exhaust tips. I then fitted the new exhausts in place but left the fittings loose so I could get the exhausts lined up properly first. It can be a bit of a ball ache getting the tips equal. The Top Gear exhausts come with elongated holes which help massively!

Next was the wiring, I ran a 4 core cable (only 3 cores were needed but I had an abundance of 4 core lying around) from behind the dash down behind the console delete and under the centre console. Then it went under the rear carpet to the driver’s side rear quarter trim panel and up inside the rear wheel arch to the big plastic grommet where all the engine wiring loom and engine lid release cable pass through. I pushed it through there to get access in to the engine bay to where I was going to do the connections for the relay and the vacuum solenoid.

I used the fixing holes that are used for the auxiliary air pump, the earlier 996’s don’t have one. I got a piece of aluminium composite plate the right size and drilled the holes to match. Then got an IP65 rated weather proof electric junction box off my dad and mounted that to the composite, and I used 20mm cable glands to keep it all waterproof.

Once the wiring was all in place it was time to plumb in the vacuum hoses from the exhaust actuators. Behind the heat shields were some 20mm holes already cut out in the body into the engine bay so thought for appearance I could drill out a 20mm hole in the heat shield and use a couple of 20mm blanking grommets that I could pierce a hole in to get the pipe through, one in the heat shield and one in the engine bay. I drilled out a 6mm hole in the grommet for the 7mm vacuum pipe so it would have a nice fit and also give it a better finish when fitted to the car.

I wasn’t sure if having one of the vacuum pipe longer than the other would make the actuators open and close at different times so I made the pipes even lengths just in case, not that it would have made that much of a difference really, but I had plenty of pipe so why not.

Next was to find the vacuum line on the car to ‘T’ off to get the suction for the exhausts. Finding the right line is important, coming off the wrong side means sometimes your valves will work and sometimes not if you go after another switched solenoid, it has to be a constant vacuum.

Then it was time to build it back up. I still have things I want done to the car but as it’s been pretty much out of action for a year, I want to use it a bit and have some enjoyment out of it.

We spent last weekend doing the NC500 in Scotland. Awesome weekend and the car performed perfectly. I may post a few pics in a different post.

I had the poly gearbox mount removed before we went. Horrible things and I just wasn’t prepared to live with all the new noises it created. I wouldn’t recommend these bushes to be fitted to a road car. But that’s just my opinion.

Hi Gents,

Ok, I know it’s been a while since I last posted. I have still been browsing the site daily but two things have hampered this. First being Marks house…. Pretty much finished now after four years of my life trying to help him get done what we can, but as it is with us, if we didn’t have bad luck we wouldn’t have any luck at all…. The old saying, one step forward, two steps back…. Second was Photobucket making you have to pay to post your pics on a third party’s website. This got me down a bit as my posts are quite picture heavy and would take me forever to change them all to another hosting site. However, as I’ve just previously said I’ve spent quite a bit of time helping Mark with his house, so I’ll just get him to do it for me. Let’s face it, it won’t take him four years to do it !!! ha… So happy in the knowledge its going to get sorted I thought I’d continue from where I left off middle of last year.

So last post was just before doing the NC500 with a few friends. The car was pretty much fully sorted at this point, just waiting for the day to come. I was speaking to a friend who’d already done the 500 and he asked if I’d raised my suspension, to which I said no. He said that some of the roads are quite bad and I would without doubt bottom out. With this in mind I set about raising the car. I noticed that the drivers side was lower than the passenger side and the tension on both springs were about the same. For now though all I could do was raise both sides up a bit but raise the driver’s side a little more. That done, the car was washed and put away waiting for the off.

The NC500 was great, weather was pretty excellent so got to put the car through it’s paces. I couldn’t believe how good it felt. Everything id done to the car to that point was totally worth it.

One thing I was talking to Mark about on the road was the difference in the height of the front suspension. We came to the conclusion that the drivers side spring must have weakened, possibly just with age or maybe the heat process from being powder coated. Anyway, I rang KW and ordered a pair of new front springs.

Next on the list which was really getting to me was the dashboard. The leather that was fitted during its retrim had come loose. It had shrunk and pulled itself back from under the front demister strips. This was most likely from the sun constantly beating down through the windscreen.

I rang a few places trying to get prices etc for the repair. As the part that had come loose was so close to the screen there wasn’t any room to get in, so I came up with the idea of having the front screen removed and seeing if someone could repair it that way. So, after a few phone calls, most of which didn’t even seem interested in doing it regardless of how it was to be done, i.e. dash in or out of the car. I was left with two possibilities. Southbound Trimmers that wanted about £2.5k but were booked up nearly a year in advance, or a guy who was relatively local to me and actually sounded like he was up for the challenge either way but said he’d have to have a look first to see the job in person. He told me to get back in touch once the car was at my works depot as he only lived 10 mins up the road.

I got the car to work and rang the guy to come along, the following day he popped in to have a look. After inspecting it he pointed out that the previous re-trimmer had used the two-part method, using a double-sided foam to give it a much nicer finish and it was in fact that which had come away so the whole dashboard would need to be removed and retrimmed “properly” he said.

Now, at this point after how good he seemed and the knowledge he showed, I asked if this was a job he’d undertake. He said absolutely, not a problem at all, just Let him get a price on all the parts needed (Leather hide and glue etc) and he’d get back to me. Sure enough, the following day he got back to me with the price obviously having to take the dashboard out myself, I agreed to let him do it and said id contact him just as soon as the dashboard was out.

The following Saturday armed with a box of tools, my printed out “how to” guides off the tinterweb, and Mark as backup, what with his eagle eyes and his computer like memory, we started to strip the car down. Steering wheel was first, side vents, radio, speakers, heater controls/centre vent and switch gear etc, then centre console and front console delete until we got down to just the dashboard and a crap load of wires.

I wouldn’t say it was a hard job to be fair, most things seem really daunting before you start them, but once you are finished you realise as long as you have a little hands-on knowledge its more just about remembering where that mountain of bloody screws go back back….

So, the dashboard was out so I rang the guy to come pick it up and get to fitting the new leather hide.

There were a few other jobs I wanted done which he also quoted for, the alcantera on the dash pod over the clocks had faded a bit in the sun, it was a kind of greenish colour so he was going to dye that black again and also there was a very small cigarette burn on the carpet which I wanted repaired, this was there from when I bought the car. He done those jobs when he came to pick up the dashboard. These turned out to be a nice repair so was looking forward to seeing the outcome of the dashboard.

I asked him if he could have the dashboard done within a week so that myself and Mark still had an idea of how things came apart and would go back together, so it was still fresh in our minds. But I said, do not rush the job for this, I’d rather wait a few extra days and have the job done right rather than rushed. He said it would be an easy job and would have it back to me by the middle of the following week. Yipeeeeee !

Friday comes around and in walks the guy with my dashboard. Perfectly on time so we could have it refitted on Saturday morning. On first inspection it looked really good, maybe not quite as good as it was done the first time by Cobra Seats, but for the price I paid compared to what other people wanted to charge me I was happy with it.

Well, for all of about 10 minutes. This is where things take a turn for the worst, what a bloody surprise. I should be used to these things happening to me by now, nothing ever goes right.

So, the guy had left with payment in his back pocket. As he was leaving I got a call come through so had to take that, once finished I went back to have another look at the dashboard when I noticed that some of the pieces were coming unstuck. I thought that the glue must have still be wet so tried sticking them down again. Some did, some didn’t. I thought it best to just ring the guy and ask why this was happening.

His Phone was turned off. Oh crap.

After an hour of constantly trying him I eventually got through. He said that shouldn’t have happened and would happily come back and have a look but as he was on his way to his caravan up in Scotland with his son it wouldn’t be till Monday/Tuesday. Just great, so much for having it fitted on Saturday, but at least he said he’d come and sort it, couldn’t complain at that. Maybe I was wrong thinking it was going to turn out to be a nightmare and it was just a genuine mistake like the glue was faulty or something.

Tuesday comes and in pops the guy to look at the dash. He looked at it and straight away said himself that it shouldn’t have happened and he would sort it straight away. To give him his dues, he held his hands up and said it was his mistake. Fair enough, take your time and get it right this time.

By the Friday I’d not heard from him so gave him a call. He said that he tried to stick it down again but it kept coming away still so decided to order a new tub of glue that was coming from Germany or some place like that, but it would be a few days before it arrived. I said fine, not a problem, speak to you next week.

The following Wednesday comes around and I’d not heard from him so gave him a call, he said he’d just been doing it the night before and it looked amazing, everything was still stuck down this morning when he checked on it so all good, he said he had a few jobs to do so was going to check on it when he got home and if all was good would drop it off Friday. At bloody last.

He comes in Friday, beaming smile on his face, dead proud of himself and places the dashboard down. Straight away I noticed that there were bits that weren’t stuck down. I asked what the hell was going on? He told me that this new glue was heat activated and to just fit the dashboard then he’d come back with his heat gun and fix any little unstuck pieces. Then once he brought the passenger side airbag in I nearly hit the roof. I’ll let the pictures do the talking.

After a little arguing, as he’d said he hadn’t done anything to it and that’s how he been given it, he said he’d have to sort something later as he had other jobs to this morning and had to go, so off he goes and I’m left looking at what utter crap he’d left me with. After about 20 minutes and a coffee to help calm the anger, I went back to have a look again and sure enough, it was all coming unstuck again. I was absolutely livid by this point.

I Rang him up and demanded a FULL refund, the job was bloody awful. I asked how he could make a living charging people for this quality of work. He again said, just fit it all and I’ll come back and have it perfect, trust me, I said that I’m not fitting this in its current condition because first of all it shouldn’t be like this and if you can’t stick it back down after I’ve fitted it all again I’d then have to pull the whole thing out again and I’m not doing that. Just give me a refund NOW and I’ll take my business to a professional who at least has some knowledge on how to retrim a dashboard.

This is when he says that he’d been a little quiet lately and it would take him a few weeks to get the cash back together, I said he have two weeks before I start looking into taking legal advice.

At this point I was really stuck. I started looking at second hand dashboards on eBay etc, but none of them had the Nappa leather and alcantera combination. The only thing was going to be to pay the £2.5k for Southbound to do, however, Southbound would now not take on the job as I’d gone elsewhere first and also that they weren’t prepared to fix some other guys mistakes as they had no idea what he’d done to the dash. For this I couldn’t blame them to be honest.

After getting home that evening sick of my life, I ended up talking to my neighbour of many talents about it, he told me to take the dashboard along to his so he could have a look himself. Totally shocked by the quality of workmanship, he just pulled on one corner of the leather and the whole thing just peeled off like it was stuck on with pritstick. After he’d pulled the new leather cover off it was totally apparent there and then why it wasn’t sticking down. The guy hadn’t removed the old foam that went between the dash and leather.

When new, the foam has a plastic kind of layer both sides for the glue to stick to. When the old leather was removed it had pulled the plastic layer off from the top side and left the bare foam, so when trying to stick the leather down it just couldn’t bond to the bare foam.

This foam was all over the dash and needed to be removed. The only thing at this point was to try and do it myself (with help from my neighbour of course). The following Monday I ordered a Nappa leather hide and tin of high temperature paint on contact adhesive. Next was to get the foam off the dashboard.

What a bloody nightmare it was, must have took me 6 or so hours of rubbing, scratching and sanding to get it off, but I managed it and got it to a point where I could actually look at fitting a top cover to it.

After watching a few videos on you tube I decided to just stick the leather straight to the dash without a foam centre piece, I thought this the best way and with the foam being the reason it let go in the first place it was the right thing to do. The only reason I could find that you would use the foam is that if the dash has an imprint like the Porsche dashboards do, it sometimes it can show through. I didn’t think it would.

Once all the items needed arrived, we got to work.

Having never done anything like this before, I have to say (without blowing my own trumpet) We done an amazing job, especially compared to what I’d been given from a so called professional. I was over the moon with how it came out and also the fact we managed to saved my original dash.

I left the dash in my living room for a week where it was nice and warm so the glue could set, and after that week I tried to pull a small piece of leather away and it would not budge, it was stuck down solid. Another thing fixed by doing it yourself.

So, basically to save going on and on about this, I did eventually get a refund, albeit it 3 weeks after and not the total amount I paid but close enough. In all it cost me in bits about £105.00 to do myself. So even though I didn’t get full refund I was still well up so all good.

Now it was the simple task of refitting. As I saw the car in bits everyday as it was at my works depot, it was becoming more and more daunting at the prospect of refitting everything and remembering where everything went. So, after checking Mark was free, we agreed that “the sooner the better” so best to refit it at the weekend. Kind of excited worried at this point. Ha.

As it turned out, it went back together really well, we’d bagged most things off together so we got the right screws for the right place and with the right amount that needed fitted. We also just used the strip down guide backwards which helped.

The finished job looked amazing, I’m not saying there aren’t any discrepancies, in some light if you look really close you can see one point where I glued up to, to do one section and where I’d continued on from, but that’s it, and it was all still stuck down perfectly. Chuffed to bits.

Whilst everything was apart I had a few things painted body colour, centre strips, steering column cover and alarm sensor trim.

After all the stress I’d been through trying to sort that mess out, I felt I deserved a little treat, so when some front and rear carbon fibre strut braces popped up for sale I thought why the hell not.

Now back to the new front springs, it was an easy job as everything had recently been apart so it only took about 45 minutes a side and it was all back together. I fitted the strut braces at the same time.

You can see the difference in spring heights between old and new. This is to be expected though over time with the weight of the car constantly pushing down on them.

I’d not used the car much since doing the above, and forgot to stick the optimiser back so when I went to take the car for a little run before putting it away for the rest of the year it wouldn’t start. I was sure that the car should be able to sit for two weeks and still have enough charge to turn it over, I leave it in the garage without the alarm on so nothing should be draining the battery. I stuck the charger on for an hour or so and went back to try it, sure enough it fired up straight away. I had the battery checked out and it looked like it had a dead cell, apparently batteries only have five year life span and the current battery was just over that so as this is an important part in the running of a car, I got a new one.

That sums up 2017 for me, highlight being the NC500, the drive from Cramlington, up to hartside for breakfast then out the back to join up with the M6 to head north was great fun. In fact, the whole west coast all the way up to the most northern point at up to John O’Grotes was excellent, lovely roads all the way. However, the drive back down the East side was quite dreary and boring. Was all straight roads and just miles and miles of average speed cameras. Not much fun at all, but all in all it was an excellent trip, all well planned out by Jamie at Nelsons

Thanks for reading, I know it’s a long one but things never seem to go right for me. At this point there wasn’t too much more I could do to the car, new radiators and air con condensers all round fit centre rad and a few other mods and powder coating to be done and then the only thing left after that is a little bit of paint work I need done and that’ll be pretty much it. Other than go around and replace all the new bits I’ve just fitted.

Luckily for me though I won’t get bored as Mark has a list as long as mine, probably even longer to be fair with stuff he wants done to his, saves me having to buy something new to fiddle with I suppose.

That dash sounded like a saga.... still £2.5k todo the job sounds a little... steep. I reckon there is P Tax in that.

RS badges and carpet? not sure why you would do that as its clearly not an RS.

it still has the sunroof so I would lose that asap as it looks really odd with that RS rear spoiler

wheels look good. as does the spoiler. really works on silver. centre console delete is a great thing to do too.

that dash work by that company was awful. truly shocking. get your money back asap and make sure he gets no more work going forward on here. name and shame!!

Unbelievable, what was the guy thinking that you would be happy with that finish, even if it was like that to start with. Any decent trimmer would have pointed it out and sorted it.

Your levels of OCD are even higher than mine. Grin

I never notice a sunroof unless I'm really trying to spot a look-a-like. I spot a rear wiper on a GT3 kitted Carrera quickly, but not a sunroof and even if did I doubt it would strike me as "looking really odd". Individual perceptions I suppose. Wink

I agree with the badges though. A previous owner named it a Cobra RS. Bit sad, but under it all is one of the most sorted 996s out there with some lovely genuine rare parts, getting better every year.

Thanks for the comments, the dashboard was a nightmare, yes. But at the end of the day if he hadn't have done such a shoddy job it wouldn't have pushed me to do it myself. At least now I know I can do a half descent job of it so happy to try again if anything else is needs done in the future.

I got the new fuel pump off of eBay. i think it cost £168 or there about. I haven't noticed even a slight difference, no.... I was looking into having my car setup properly again, fuel and air mix etc, as it'll have never been done since new. The guy told me that it would be best to fit a fuel pump as when they get old they begin to get weak towards the higher revs and can make the car run lean. So i had this fitted and then the guy never actually got back to me... Maybe if i had had it set up it might have made a difference.

Hi NLW73,

The only things left on the car that are "RS" are the centre caps and the rear carpet.

The carpet set was not fitted by me, it was the guy who owned Cobra Seats, He restored the car to mint condition and fitted all the "RS" bits himself, it was his show car, he called it "Cobra RS" so had some relevance to him.

Over time i've removed all the decals etc, you can see what it was like to start with and what its like now. It obviously looks a hell of a lot better !

Once i come across some black genuine centre caps i'll change those too. As for the carpet, no doubt at some point i'll change it but it's not really a high priority to me as i have more important things i'd like to do first and it doesn't really bother me to be honest. It has the Carrera badge on the back so no one can confuse it as a lookalike.

Yeah, i don't think the spoiler would look that good if it wasn't for the wheels to help set it off, i'll no doubt get there with everything else though, cheers
