Hartech Engine rebuild and all good again

As some of you maybe read last year I had some serious oil pressure issues with my car, I also had a lot of metal fragments in my oil filter, I had only had the car a few months before noticing this, I bought the car without a proper inspection etc so you pay your money and take your chance, I thought the car was cheap enough that's why I didn't get the PPI done.

After some thought I decided I was going to keep the car and get the engine rebuilt, the car went down to Hartech for the rebuild as my thoughts were if I'm spending good money on a rebuild I want it done by a company that specialise in this and I know myself its done right and I'm not waiting on something else engine wise letting go.

Anyway I have to say Grant at Hartech was excellent to deal with, everything from collection right through to delivery of my car was effortless, I've done a few miles with the car now just running it in but already it feels totally different but that was probably more to do with a few underlying problem that Grant and his team had to deal with.

Again if anyone finds thereself in the same position as me, the first thing I did was a little research into second hand engines but most are around 100k which I'm led to believe is rebuild territory, I then started looking about various garages/companies to see what my options were regarding a rebuild in the end I went with Hartech after speaking with Grant. If anyone is in this position I personally would recommend Hartech highly

Good to hear that everything has been sorted with the Engine, all that leaves now is for you to enjoy driving your 911.

I have to ask Locosaki...
How much? :thumb:

Yeah just a case of driving it and enjoying it now.

Dermot, thanks for the help and advice on previous posts hopefully now I shouldn't have any major issues.

Cost wise, there are lots of variations as to what can be done and what needs done, Hartechs website is a good indication of costs but mine needed a crank over and above getting it rebuilt.

Did Hartech provide a used crank, or did you have to buy a new one?

Yeah Hartech provided the crank, not sure on costs of new crank but if they can still be had I'd imagine they'd be quite a few thousand pounds.

At this stage I went with the newer style IMS set up from the newer car, not quite sure on the ins and outs but that's what I had done, quite sure someone with more knowledge could elaborate more.

Hartech will upgrade the original ims bearing to the later final 997 design by modifying the ims sprocket and spigot to accommodate it.

Peace of mind that your new rebuilt engine will not go pop due to the smaller bearing.

Worth every penny. :thumb:

I think new cranks are around 3k. My car is at Hartech at the moment, and I'm hoping it won't need one!

The potential need for a crank etc is why I have been thinking of having the rebuild done at 80,000 miles (on 62,000 right now) hopefully with the engine running healthily at that point- my goal being to only require replacement of the consumables as it were, albeit that that includes the cylinder barrels.

Using advanced man maths this makes things cheaper by avoiding a larger expense- which might never come, of course.

What sort of cost are you looking at for a "refresh" at 80k miles? What is the potential saving if it was the "worst case" failure scenario?

Its not really a bad idea, especially if you can combine it with things such as clutch, water pump, spark/coil packs, tandem pump etc

I too would be very interested in this: it does make sense, but only at the right price (and engine size  ).

If you think about price I don't think it does make finical sense to fix a 10k car with a 10k rebuild but then again someone has to do it.

I'd imagine a fair few people would end up breaking the car ( I gave it serious consideration) if this does turn out to be the case then a good one will be harder to come by, that was the logic behind my thinking

All prices are here: https://www.hartech.org/rebuild-prices

But at a guestimate, if you send the car to them and they do a full engine strip, replace all seals, gaskets, etc. New oil & filter, road test (the full monty on just a strip and rebuild) & also add on crankshaft bearing set, stronger IMS spindle and (normal) bearing with seals removed & timing chain set you're looking in the region of just shy of £5k including VAT.
