Hi all, I'm finally in the position to buy my dream car and my budget is 35K. I have a few questions that I would like answered and this seems the perfect place to get those answers.

Im currently looking the below and I would like to get your thoughts on it

http://www.parkwayspecialistcars.co.uk/stocklist/porsche-911-997-carrera-c4s-tip-convertible/

the service history to date looks really good

Service History to Date:

29.12.2008 Porsche Centre Bolton 18048 miles (Minor Service)
11.01.2011 Porsche Centre Bolton 26142 miles (Major Service)
24.01.2013 Porsche Centre Bolton 30533 miles (Minor Service)
07.03.2015 Porsche Centre Wilmslow 34652 miles (Major Service to include Spark Plugs)
11.02.2017 Porsche Centre Sheffield 38950 miles (Minor Service)

I would also like to know if it would be beneficial to get an independent report done on the car and if I did would that be able to help with any bore scoring issues that may arise.

I appreciate any help that can be given

Looks lovely and is the right sort of money for a low mileage 4S cab. Cobalt is a lovey colour I know several guys that when looking were specific about it being cobalt.
The spec is average it has bose, heated seats. lobster claw alloys

It doesnt have sports exhaust, sport chrono, sports hardback seats,

I would definitely have a PPI done get a borescope done and check the engine number to be sure it has the newer IMS bearings some were done earlier than March 06 but its widely accepted that all cars build after March had the newer ones.

Porsche will warranty these cars up to 14 years old after doing a 111 point check on them the cost is about £1200 pa but it would give you complete peace of mind. personally I havent bothered but its personal choice.

Good Luck keep and us posted :thumb: :thumb: :thumb:

Hi Phil,

Thanks for the info it is much appreciated. Regarding the missing spec items you mentioned are they a big miss or just nice to haves.

I have the engine number and the car is a January 2007 registered, how do I got about checking if it has the newer IMS bearings. If it has the newer IMS bearings does this make it less likely to have issues with the bore scoring.

Hi Mac. No, ims bearing is a totally different issue to bore scoring.

There's a buyers guide on all related issues to these cars on hartech's website which is on the bottom left of adverts on this site. It's a good read and gives you everything you'll need to know.

Good luck.

RE the IMS its not linked to borescoring but if it failed unlike borescore thats gradual, IMS is catastrophic failure and a full engine rebuild . as an 07 car its almost certainly got the newer IMS but if you want to be sure look for threads on here with the pre and post engine numbers. I do have the info in my garage so click on my car model under my forum name and in there you will find a bit with the engine numbers .

The missing spec can all be retro fitted if you felt the need for it the only thing you wouldnt get would be the chrono clock on the dash but thats no big loss lol . the sport upgrade for the tip is avail and comes with a sport button on the PASM panel, the alloys are easy to change loads of 997 ones on ebay. ,sports exhaust the PSE can be retro fitted at about 2k but to be honest there are nicer aftermarket sports exhausts at a lot less than that and some like the one I have are valvetronic so can be turned on or off like the PSE . Sports seats can again be picked up on ebay if you feel you need them I dont have them and have the comfort seats like the ones in the car your looking at.

So no those missing items should not put you off the car as all or some can be retro fitted as and when you feel you want them.

The borescore you really need to get it borescoped as then you will know where you stand, if all's good and to be honest most are good, then when you buy it just follow the preventative recommendations , eg dont hoon it over 3k revs until fully warmed up, change to millers 10w50 nano oil. fit a low temp thermostat. change the oil every 10 k/ yearly miles not every 2 years as in the service book. and you can enjoy the car knowing you have taken the recommended measures .Borescore is not as prevalent as the internet would have you believe but there is no denying it is an issue with some cars. :thumb: :thumb: hope that helps mate

Hi and welcome,

Nice car!!

IMS bearing plays no part on bore scoring. Auto box on a 3.8 does and is the most likely gen I 997 to suffer from it.

Make 100% sure those bores are in good condition.

Good luck :thumb:

Only thing I don't like is that it's a tiptronic and not a manual. Sports Chrono is nice to have but not essential, but it feels slightly strong money to me.

2 years ago I paid £30,000 for a mint 2007 C2S cabrio with a massive spec, way higher than that, OPC warranty, PSE, Sports Chrono, hard back seats etc etc and a manual. Prices have if anything gone up since.

It isn't a very bad deal, but it definately isn't a great one purely because its a tip, imo!

Have you driven many? Are you sure you want a C4S? Go and drive some, 2 and 4 feel very different, and personally I hate the tip box!

each to there own mate, I love the tip box but do drive it a lot on the rockers so its like a lazy guys manual but with none of that silly leg moving stuff going on :floor: also by driving like that I pull away in 1st and not the default auto box 2nd gear .

I was in your position with similar budget a couple of years ago.

I decided to go for a gen2 3.6, for peace of mind wrt bores/IMS/RMS, more modern looking (lights/interior/nav etc) and less likely to depreciate as much as gen1.

Performance wise, there is little difference between gen1 3.8 & gen2 3.6

The biggest difference is engine/exhaust note of the DFI engine.

Hope that helps.

Indeed, and falls into a lower VED bracket too, so £200 saved PA, happy days :D
