Starting the prep work - future 991 owner

I have secretly (without consulting the Missus) started the prep work for a 991.1, focusing on a C2S, with the possibility of stretching to a C4S nearer the time. After owning a 997.1 for a couple of years, I'm really starting to understand my desired spec - which includes Sports Exhaust, Sport Chrono, PDK. Are there any other must-have options that I should be keeping an eye out for?

Are there any critical issues (think bore scoring, IMS, etc) that I need to be on the look out for? Pretty sure the Gen 2 wiped most of these out.

Is a PPI still relevant for a 991.1? Are the usual top inspectors for the <997 up to date with the newer models?

How have people found reliability in the 991? It has been short lived in the market (~5yrs), but build quality should start to show fairly early. I'm talking about anything from niggling low-cost issues through to medium cost repairs.

Is an OPC ext. warranty a must have on a newer car like this (if it doesn't have one at purchase)? I'm reading about some surprising exclusions in this forum - which raises concerns over the low comprehensive nature for an extended warranty.

Good timing of this thread as I am starting to do the same with regards an early 991 base Carrera. My only must haves are PDK, sports design steering wheel with paddles and a sunroof and ideally on 19" wheels.

I am also interested in reliability of the 991 over the 997 given some of the horror stories you read. From research, the 991's appear bullet proof as long as they have comprehensive service records

Paddles! Well remembered.

Agreed regarding the potentially bombproof nature of the 991. I have been monitoring this forum (along with competitor forums) and can't seem to locate many major issues. The normal niggles (especially electronics); but otherwise they seem like a good bet.

As much as I like the fact that 991's are holding value pretty well, I have an upper budget of about £55k and at the moment there are hardly any at that price. I don't want a high miler but really do need those hovering around £60k to drop a bit.

I really want my cake and to eat it !!

Our family car is a Macan and as much as my GTi is the perfect fast all rounder, I have a major itch that I need to scratch that is a 991

Want to run the GTi for another 12 months or so then take the plunge and keep the 911 for a good few years

My budget will very much depend on the spread between the 997.1 and the 991.1.

There have been a few £60-65k early-C2S popping up at the OPC (without hideous mileages), and some reasonably spec'd examples coming up at non-specialists in the £57-60k range. You're pretty much looking at Black only.

I often wonder if the best ones are snapped up before they are even advertised. A waiting list of interest, so to speak... I'm going to have a chat with my local OPC and let them know my intention.

there are decent cars about albeit the 'S' is holding its money well. I was talking to a guy the other day that got a manual 2012 C2 for 50k and it had all the right toys including PSE, chrono and even ceramic brakes + warranty! That car was in the dealership just 24hrs apparently. You got nothing to lose to mailshot a few dealers and tell them what you want. People are starting to take delivery of their GTSs and I have seen a few gen 2s around so probably a good time to get on your toes

Good advice thanks

Are there any known mechanical issues that have surfaced on early 991's that we should be on the lookout for before sinking £50k + on a 3-5 year old car

What is wrong with black?

Nothing wrong with black. My reference to "only black" was to point out that in that price range there is little choice. I own a black car...
